  1. Are you all on crack?!? We're talking about Manny Ramirez here. I'd pay him $50 million if I was the Wilpons. Career BA: .314 League Career BA: .273 (the league average during his career) Number of Mets with a lifetime BA over .300: ONE (John Olerud .315) Career OBP: .409 League Career OBP: .343 Number of Mets with a lifetime OBP over .400: ONE (John Olerud .425) Career SLG: .599 League Career SLG: .436 Number of Mets with a lifetime SLG over .550: ZERO (Mike Piazza .542) Career OPS: 1.008 League Career OPS: .780 Number of Mets with a lifetime OPS over 1.000: ZERO (John Olerud .926) He instantly becomes the most dangerous offensive player ever to wear a Mets uniform... and he's only 33. B-R.com lists only one player, Juan Gonzalez, with a similarity score over 860 to Man-Ram... and it's only 913. That's because there has never been a hitter like Manny. I'd put him on my team, and I'd put him on my team now.
  2. I visually remember two long home runs: one hit by Mark Whiten to win a game in the 13th inning for the Buffalo Bisons in August 2000 -- we were there for my bachelor party -- and one hit by Danny Clyburn deep into the night at Frontier Field in Rochester a few years earlier. I was at the Dave Palmer brawl game in '86, but I was ten years old, so maybe those Gary Carter home runs just seemed a lot longer than they actually were.
  3. Pedro's a lock... nobody else is. I'd figure that f anything, Benson's more likely to be here -- he just finished the first year of a long-term deal -- than Glavine, who is done after this year. I could see Glavine going to some team to help offset a bigger contract coming this way.
  4. sharpie wrote: Randy Choate getting two at bats when he pitched 1 2/3 innings is pretty weird. Especially considering he had a grand total of three ABs, in only five games, in 2001 -- and only five total ABs in his career (one in '02, one in '04).
  5. Two quick observations on that game: 1) That was a power-packed lineup. Bet the MFYs feared it when the McEwing-Relaford-Ordonez-pitcher-Agbayani-Shinjo section of the lineup came around. 2) Remember Cook & Wendell? And Rick Reed? Loved those guys.
  6. Could you imagine a whole team of Shinjos and Matsuis, plus Benny Agbayani in left field and Matt Franco at first base, managed by Bobby Valentine? They would go 25-137, but they'd be a helluva lot of fun to watch.
  7. Edgy, it looks like Jon Heyman wrote that article!
  8. The Crane Pool Forum has no regard for your laws! You can't tell us what to do, The Man!
  9. This Soler kid had better be hot shit. It seems like they've spent a lot of energy on him, and he appears on all these prospect lists, but nobody's seen him pitch yet. Could be interesting.
  10. Cathedral "Sports Bay" home page. ]The Sports Bay The Sports Bay is dedicated to St. Hubert (656-728) who inherited the legend of the second-century martyr St. Eustache: While hunting, he encountered a white stag whose antlers formed a gleaming crucifix. This ended his hunting career and converted him to the Christian faith, in which he rose to the position of bishop at Liege. Ironically, Hubert has become the patron saint of hunters while also one of the saints of animal protection. There are over two dozen sports depicted in the stained glass, including: Bowling Auto Racing Figure Skating Ice Hockey Basketball Fishing Golf No photos other than these:
  11. It reads too stupidly to even be Jon Heyman.
  12. How the hell did Ishii not even get a single third-place vote?!?! I'm stunned.
  13. Oh, and Michael Kay can go blow it out his you-know-what. But I think I've expressed that opinion before.
  14. Heard the same interview on the FAN with Gary. (What was weird was that it didn't sound like him at all on the phone. This is a guy whose voice I know better than anyone's but my wife's, so I can tell you it didn't sound right, but I digress.) He did rip YES a bit, which was funny, and he does seem really excited for this opportunity. It has to be better financially for him, and better from a national-exposure angle. So I wish him nothing but the best, but he will definitely be missed on the radio. Considering I listen to waaaay more games than I watch, this one sucks from my end, depending on who replaces him.
  15. The little gold Topps Rookie Star trophy they put in the corner of their cards, which of course I can't find a photo of.
  16. ]Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ugueth Urbina was arrested on a charge of attempted murder after he and a group of men allegedly attacked several employees at his family home using machetes and trying to set them on fire, police said Tuesday. Yikes.
  17. "Yes, officer, we are discussing titty clubs. And Muppets. I know. Thanks."
  18. I always thought of baseball names as they appeared on baseball cards. Gary Gray's 1983 Topps card, for instance, or Joe DeSa's 1986 Topps card with the weird capital/lowercase thing. I always liked guys that we were able to make stupid nicknames out of, like Bryan Clutterbuck ("Clutterbutt") or Jaime Cocanower ("Cockanuka") or Tom Niedenfuer ("Niedenfu&@er"). I seem to remember a guy we called "Thunderbutt" or something like that, but I don't remember who it was (Mark Thurmond, maybe?)... ah, the good old days.
  19. And that would go in Elster's "non-conservative porn thread."
  20. Feed his llamas, Omar.
  21. Interesting side note about Hoffman; the Padres just hired his brother Glenn to coach third base. Wonder how that plays into his plans, if at all.
  22. Hey! Is this a Zambrano thread, or are we discussing trades? What the hell happened to Sean Burroughs? Talk about a prospect who never became anything. This kid was supposed to be such hot shit at third a few years ago. He came up, sucked, was moved all around the diamond, and now the Pads would rather have a 40-year-old retread at third than Burroughs. Ouch.
  23. Thanks to Valadius' hint, now let's get rid of the non-Yanks from Yancy's list: Yancy Street Gang wrote: 126 possibilities (pitchers with losing or .500 records who debuted in 1986 or later) Jason Anderson Tim Burke Paul Gibson Lee Guetterman Felix Heredia Graeme Lloyd Mike Stanton Frank Tanana Allen Watson Dave Weathers Lloyd's Australian, Heredia's Latin, so they're out. Stanton's out because he was guessed. Guetterman, Anderson, Burke, Watson, and Weathers haven't really been around long enough to be in any kind of HoF, which leaves Tanana and Gibson. Gibson's done a lot of coaching around LI, but I guess my guess is going to be Frank Tanana.
  24. I've never gotten worked up about Gold Gloves either. It's a nice award, and if they gave me one, I wouldn't turn it down, but it seems like the voting is either really arbitrary (like defensive stats) or just "goes to the same guys every year." That said, Keith Hernandez is still a Hall of Famer.
  25. And you can delete all the black and Latin guys from that list, along with anyone else who has any kind of "Z" or weird consonant combination, because I'm assuming his name doesn't "sound Polish."
