  1. I know Andruw Jones covers a lot of ground, but I think the Netherlands are going to be a bit overmatched.
  2. ]Sosa claims several teams want to sign him SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Outfielder Sammy Sosa said he's talking with several teams interested in signing him for next season. The Baltimore Orioles said last month they wouldn't bring back Sosa or fellow slugger Rafael Palmeiro, both of whom struggled this past season. Sosa declined to say which teams he's talking to, but said he'll make an announcement about where he'll play sometime after the annual winter baseball meetings, which begin Monday. "We're negotiating with several teams," Sosa said in comments published Sunday in the daily newspaper HOY, in his native Dominican Republic. "We're going to make it a surprise." Some have speculated that Sosa could join the New York Mets, whose general manager, Omar Minaya, signed Sosa to his first professional contract in the 1980s when Minaya was a scout for the Texas Rangers. "Sammy only needs an opportunity to play and show that he's recovered" from nagging injuries that hurt his play this year, Minaya was quoted as saying in the Sunday edition of El Nacional, another Dominican daily. The 37-year-old Sosa came to the Orioles in a February trade with the Chicago Cubs for second baseman Jerry Hairston and two minor leaguers. Sosa was expected to provide the Orioles with a powerful bat in the cleanup spot, but ended up hitting only .221 with 14 homers and 45 RBI in 102 games during an injury-shortened season. Sosa said he's confident of signing with another team and playing well. "I'm at peace because I trust in what I've done in the past. I'm Sammy Sosa and everyone remembers it," Sosa was quoted as saying in HOY. Yikes.
  3. This is going to be blasphemous, but let's see Reyes get a little better before we start throwing long-term big dollars at him.

  5. Bobby Bonilla comes back on the books in 2009.
  6. Why would a team take Matsui off our hands when Omar would rather give up a prospect or eight?
  7. LoDuca in 2005: .283/.334/.380 6 HR in 445 AB (132 G) Ugly. Better on the road (.798 vs .619 OPS), but still ugly. Tenth out of 14 catchers in the majors with at least 450 PA in OPS in '05. (Better than Toby Hall, but not much.) 89 SB vs 29 CS, good for a little less than 25% CS. Better than some, but still in the bottom half of the majors. One good season (2001), ugly since then.
  8. Furcal to LA for 3 years, $40 million. Our division competitors are starting to look pretty haggard. Me likey.
  9. No Mets; Jim Rice and Dick Allen are the biggest non-Met baseball names on my birthday list.
  10. I'm pretty sure that would be like Barry Zito walking his dog past Scarlet's house.
  11. I think Edgy cheated.
  12. sharpie wrote: 3 years for $17 million is less than $6 million a year, not almost $8 million. Still, a lot of money and I'd gladly work for that rate. Perhaps you need to give Bean Stringfellow a call next time you're up for review.
  13. Hey! I pulled a Billy Wagner jersey card out of a pack of Topps cards today! Considering I almost never ever ever pull anything cool, this is a neat surprise.
  14. All-Delaware Team: C Chris Widger 1B John Mabry 2B Delino DeShields 3B Hans Lobert (1903-1917) SS Ken Szotkiewicz (1970) OF Randy Bush (1982-1993) OF Dave May (1967-1978) OF Kevin Mench SP Sadie McManhon (1889-1897) SP Ian Snell SP Chris Welsh (1981-1986) SP Bert Cunningham (1887-1901) RP Chris Short (1959-1973) RP Wayne Franklin RP Renie Martin (1979-1984) MGR/RP Dallas Green
  15. No, they're referring to Barry Zito. Read the column; it's the very next line.
  16. Which means you say "Thanks, Bert, but we've decided to go another direction."
  17. You want another Benitez-Julio parallel? New York Mets traded Todd Hundley and Arnold Gooch to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Roger Cedeo and Charles Johnson on December 1, 1998. New York Mets traded Charles Johnson to the Baltimore Orioles for Armando Benitez on December 1, 1998. That would be freaky if this happened today.
  18. Got 6, but there were only four that I actually knew; the other two were educated guesses.
  19. Their shared last name, of course, is "Ot."
  20. Edgy, will you please stop stalking Billy Wagner? edit: Ah, hell. I'm Braden Looper. I'm going to have to start messing up the ends of my posts -- throwing in extra letters, forgetting words, spelling things wrong.
  21. Yep. This trade would actually help us, I think. Abreu and Manny are pretty close offensively, and although Abreu's not much defensively, we know Manny's probably worse. So this wouldn't be the end of the world at all. That said, ESPN is quoting a source as saying it's "highly unlikely." So we'll see.
  22. Not necessarily Mets-related, but Sotheby's just listed several hundred items from baseball history on eBay that will blow your mind. Hope you all have some extra money lying around to add to your collection. How about a scorecard from Cy Young's 1904 perfect game? A Babe Ruth-Lou Gehrig signed baseball? A Ty Cobb game-used bat? Joe Jackson's "Black Betsy" bat? How about the original Heisman trophy? The Braves hat Hank Aaron wore when he hit #715? Leo Durocher's 1947 NL Championship ring? This is some pretty wild stuff.
  23. For what it's worth, and I know this doesn't belong in this thread, but... Wagner is a natural righty; he does everything right-handed except pitch... which is what makes him such a freak of nature. (Hence the seemingly misplaced watch.)
