  1. How about a right-handed PH? (I'm kidding.)
  2. Willets Point wrote: Congrats to O'Neil, he's a good guy and I'm glad he got a chance to play again. Publicity stunt or no, I think it's all good, clean fun. You know, it's all fun and games until the 94-year-old leads off against Roger Clemens in a minor league rehab start and gets drilled between the numbers.
  3. Darryl out of jail yet? Now there's some lefty pop.
  4. Willie talked a bit about Delgado's slump on M&MD (well, just "M") today. I guess Delgado "knows what he's doing wrong," but he's just having a hard time putting the pieces together. Which means iubitul is right.
  5. I laughed my ass off at the discussion this morning. When they had the snippet from "Beauty and the Beast" cued up, I nearly drove off the road. I really enjoy them. I feel like they do a little too much "coming up" ("When we return from the break, this exciting but topic that I'm going to be very vague about will be discussed!"), but I usually get a good laugh. The competitive eater interview they did last week was very funny also.
  6. I think I would have to give up baseball for soccer if Michael Kay were given a national voice.
  7. Elster88 wrote: The concept of a FIP, Fielding Independent Pitching ERA, intrigues me. I'm just glad they finally refined the formula. It used to be based exclusively on strikeouts and lineouts back to the pitcher. "Every player's FIP is 0.00! That can't be right!"
  8. For what it's worth, WFAN is running a radio version of this spot featuring Frank Thomas. So I wonder if it's not all David. That said, I completely agree with Soup. Get your religion out of my face.
  9. It wont take long, just watch and see how the fellas lay their money down.
  10. QUICK! Turn off the TV before the ESPYs come on!
  11. QUIT IT with the frigging ESPYs crap.
  12. A (hopefully) meaningless home run in the bottom of the seventh inning down by eight by Phil (A-Rod) Nevin.
  13. I hate to beat a dead horse, but Joe Morgan is an idiot.
  14. Valentin knocks over Barrett (accidentally) with the tag to start the DP... shades of Albert Belle and Fernando Vina.
  15. The real question is, Is this the biggest inning in Mets history? SC=11 runs
  16. dinosaur jesus wrote: I've been wondering all year why Heilman hasn't been getting a chance to start, but I think Oliver should actually be next in line. He's been going long innings anyway, and pitching very well. See, I can understand leaving Oliver in the bullpen; you have to have a long reliever, and he's been as good as it gets. If you start Oliver, you lose that. But if you start stretching out Heilman, you still have Sanchez and Bradford to fill that role. BTW - no particular disdain for John Maine; I just don't want him pitching in a big spot in October.
  17. Why don't we give them Wright, Reyes, Tom Seaver's retired number, Met-El, Lenny Dykstra, Roger McDowell, and the naming rights to the new Bob Murphy Stadium? Gimme a break, Post. FWIW, I'd take Westbrook.

  19. ="Edgy DC"]This has been a much more pleasant thread than Seeing Tom Beaver. You got a problem with me?
  20. ="ScarletKnight41"]And with that, the tarp is coming off the field. Game on!
  21. Circa 2003-2004: Aaron Heilman is a failed pitching prospect who can't get anyone out, as a starter or a reliever. Circa September 2005: Aaron Heilman is the most integral part of he Mets' bullpen. He's a trading chip who they'll never trade, unless they get the 1968 version of Bob Gibson. Circa Winter 2005-06: Aaron Heilman, wonderboy of the 2005 pitching staff, is being bandied about like a shuttlecock. He's a starter; he's a reliever; he's an Oakland A; he's the closer; he's Billy Wagner's caddy; he's a starter, but only if there's an extended injury to a Mets starter; he's a setup guy otherwise. 2006: The Mets call in every pitcher who's ever started a game in the major leagues, including Jose Freaking Lima and John "I Swear I Was A Top Prospect Once" Maine, to fill in for injuries, while Heilman languishes in the bullpen. Meanwhile, poor, downtrodden Aaron Heilman reverts closer to his old form, walking the ballpark and generally causing fans to groan every time they see him warming up. I thought someone (Willie? Ed Coleman? Omar?) said that they wouldn't use Heilman as a starter unless it was for the long term. Here's the question: How much longer term do you want? You have a guy (Sanchez) who does what you wanted Heilman to do, and you have a huge John Maine-sized hole in the starting rotation. What's up? If he was pitching better out of the bullpen, they'd leave him in there because he's pitching well. Is it the case that because he's struggled, they'd rather leave him there because they're afraid he's going to struggle in the rotation? Like he could possibly be worse than John Maine and Jose Lima? I don't get it. Heilman's going to be dealt for pennies on the dollar, and he's going to make the fucking All-Star team next year for the A's or the Phillies or someone. Lock that one up in the predictions thread.
  22. Yancy Street Gang wrote: Lopez, also 26, is hitting .268 with nine homers and 30 RBIs. He failed to improve upon his breakthrough season last year, when he made his first All-Star team. Yeah, you definitely want to give up a 26-year-old who hits .260 for a 36-year-old who hits .260. Brilliant. In the Reds' defense, it does open up space for my birthday buddy Ryan Freel, who deserves more time, and for Chris Denorfia, who's one of their top OF prospects. Deal still probably sucks if I'm a Reds fan.
  23. I agree; I thought so immediately, but I wanted to see if maybe I was seeing things wrong. They gave up a masher (Kearns) and a 20/20 shortstop (Lopez), PLUS their 2004 #1 draft pick who struck out 148 guys in 71 innings his senior year in college (Wagner) for Frankenstein (Majewski), a guy with a 5+ ERA in AAA last year (Bray), a middle infield "prospect" who's now in his fourth organization in two years (Harris), an old guy (Clayton), and a 20-year-old (Thompson).
