But I do think that a lot of the answer is, “you’re better than this” Because the offense looks like it’s trying too hard, and the pitching staff too. So if I were Mendoza I’d say to the guys, “who are you when you’re at your best? Be that guy. Don’t try to hit the ball outta the damn park each time - just be a good hitter who’s aggressive on his pitches, and we’ll start string hits and runs together, instead of getting our own selves out. And pitchers, throw the ball like you mean it, instead of tying to be cute. Be the big leaguers you are. Relax, have fun, and go win some ****ing games.”

What’s your message to this team? What do you tell them? How do you break them out of this funk? Obviously, “stop sucking” but more specifically, what do you think the team needs to hear? It’s all up to you!

Baty’s OPS+ is higher than Vientos’ at 112 to 105 And Baty has been the better defensive player by about 11-12 runs or so according to both bbref FanGraphs. So much so that vientos defense negates his offense, at least using bbref’s calculations. FanGraphs has a slightly different calculation, with Baty having the war edge 1.9 to 0.5 But in either case, the bulk of the difference is defense.

This was a fun game to be at. Nats park is very pretty. Amed Rosario. Wow. The scoreboard had him at 41 mph on his last pitch to Pete. It was humorous as it tried to classify them at curveballs. His 50mph pitches showed up as sliders. When he busted out the 60mph heater, the scoreboard mocked it with a change up designation. Mays fans abounded in the park. My left field section (104) might've made Brandon blush when he came back onto the field after his 9th rbi. He's just a big sweetheart and is high among my list of favorite Mets.

Ghost runner is the most unbaseballish rule change. Everything else is just fuzzy modifications of that which previously was so. Even the eh which is essentially a persistent pinch hitter for the pitcher is less of an abomination upon the prior state of the game than starting an inning with a fricking runner already on base and in scoring position with no explanation. It is an affront to the gods. Not only of baseball but of man and nature.

I too like the idea but not the execution. But cmon… oh noes there’s a ballpark race - how can this be in a big serious important city like New York!? Hey, old guys! How long have we had various incarnations of computer animated video races like the delta dash or whatever else, up on the scoreboard? Have you been ****ing all over that, too, for the past 20, 30 years? **** I can’t even remember how long ago they started. Jeezus alooo! What a bunch of old fussy ruddies. Sorry. Auto correct. What a bunch of old fuddy-duddies! My only complaint is that the costumes are a miss, in that they look like they were each designed and built by a different committee of non-artists. There’s no stylistic unity across them. They’re gonna be awkward and hilarious and awesome trundling around the warning track, careening to and fro. I love the idea of borough-authentic foodstuffs - it’s where I thought they were going with the pizza - but these are still pretty fun. Remember fun!? It’s ****ing baseball, not a funeral for a kid who drowned saving a puppy from a frozen lake.

[Raises hand meekly] Granted I’m historically soft on players coming back from injury, but jeez. The dude was one year removed from popping his patellar tendon clean off his kneecap, when he throws a hunnert. He uses that leg to explode off the rubber. I can’t even imagine how much force is going through those reunited tendon fibers with each pitch. I mean, I actually can. You can’t help but lose a ton of strength with that type of injury. I imagine it took a looooooong time to really trust the repair to the point where you can throw without thinking about it. Probably till just around mid season if I had to guess. Given another year after, I’m expecting him to be a lot more like the Edwin Diaz we should be expecting, rather than the one we were worried about at the start of the season. And besides… think of all the big name huge lockdown closers in the postseason last year. clase. Williams. The two biggest names actually. And both coughed it up bigger than Edwin. So whattayagonnado? Yes Edwin scares the **** out of me. But because I’m worried about his injury and feel personally vested in his recovery as an avatar of my own recovery. If he can be Edwin again, maybe I, a much older, far less professional athlete, can be myself again too.

he's not entirely wrong... according to fangraphs' depth charts feature, the mets are projected to have the 2nd best WAR from their batters in the majors at 33.3 WAR, behind only the Os at 33.4. The dodgers are projected for 33.0 WAR in 3rd, while the yankees (31.7) and braves (31.4) round out the top five. granted that includes defense. if we look instead to the projected standings page, the mets are projected to score 4.73 runs per game, good for third, behind the dodgers at 4.90 and the braves at 4.86. the yankees (4.68) and phillies (4.65) round out this particular top five. here, though, the projections include any park effects, as well as projected opponent strength. so, it's certainly not an unreasonable proclamation. especially if you think, as i do, that pete is going to have a terrific year and exceed his projections.
