  1. What is that last list a list of? ... Oh wait, it's hits in a season by a pitcher.
  2. Dustin Pedroia has been placed on the 60-Day IL with no timetable as to when or even IF he'll return. The former MVP (2008) played in just six games this season after just three last year. He also missed large chunks of 2015 & 2010 The issue here is a knee problem which doesn't seem to be getting better. He's yet to mention the 'R' word but that's starting to look more and more likely for the soon-to-be 36 y/o Nats fell short on their attempt for a four-game sweep this afternoon as the Marlins eked out a 3-2 win. This also means that the Nats again lost another Scherzer start. Though not great by his standards, Scherzer is having a decent enough season [3.41 ERA, 1.18 WHIP prior to today] but the team is now 2-10 in games where he took the mound.
  3. Great mustache
  4. Not sure about whether four in a year is unique (my guess is yes but I don't know that) But I would say that it's pretty safe to assume that the spawn of three MLB H-o-F'ers have never made their ML debuts within a month before. Vladdy Jr = Apr 26; Cavan Biggio = May 24; Mike Yastrzemski = May 25 btw, Good on young Yazzy for sticking it out. He's nearly 29 y/o and is nobody's idea of a prospect. And it's not like, with that name, he can go unnoticed and not have unflattering comparisons tossed in his direction. There must have been many temptations to just give it up along the way. New York connections? Tatis senior played for the Mets while Vlad senior was linked by rumors to the Mets right up until signing with Anaheim. And both Biggio Sr & Grandpa Yaz were Long Island natives. Biggio (Kings Park HS) actually won Suffolk County's top HS football award as a HS senior, and I remember reading a Newsday piece, probably back some time during the '90s, about how one of Yaz's HS basketball records (Bridgehampton HS) had just been broken some four decades after he set it. You can probably win a few bar bets with Yaz's L.I. connection. Since everyone associates him with New England many think he's always been from there but he was the scion of immigrant Polish potato farming stock out on the (then much more rural) south fork. Suffolk County's top HS baseball award -- the one Biggio didn't win (although Boomer Esiason did) -- is named for Yaz.
  5. Edgy MD wrote: Bill and Bobby debuted a few weeks apart from each other with the Dodgers in September 1969, and I assume were teammates on several minor league rosters. And both were considered superior athletes (even among groups of athletes) until injuries, age, and time wore them down. NFL coach, and a college coach prior to that, Dick Vermeil once named Buckner as the player he was most disappointed at being unable to recruit. I think Vermeil heading up Stanford at the time and Buckner was a local HS wide receiver "who could fly" acc to Vermeil. Keith will likely have some words tonight (assuming he makes this trip). He was just a couple years behind B.B. and described him as "a schoolboy legend" in northern California.
  6. Seattle, coming off an 89-win season, is on pace for a whopping 69 victories this year. Or maybe it's just Jay Bruce's .193 BA that's got ya down.
  7. Or with the signals/instructions he's getting from above.
  8. Edgy MD wrote: Interesting that they went to Ramos for a DGAaNG, even a DGAaNG in which he caught 11. It pretty much announces by implication that Nido-as-deGrom's personal catcher is a thing. You knew this was going to be the case because Mickey was so intent on denying it as recently as last week.
  9. He went further than that, he said he knew that being a MFY fan "would be "immoral".
  10. It won't be the same around here without him.
  11. Chad ochoseis wrote: It's the Tomas Nido game! It's more like the catcher game. - 7 hits by the entire team, 4 of them by the two catchers [3 Ramos, 1 Nido] including all 3 XBHs and 1 of the 3 walks - 3 HRs in the game, all by the catchers [2, 1] - 5 RBI, all by the catchers [4,1] and 3 of the 5 runs scored [2,1] Then toss in 13 innings of squatting [11, 2] plus a key pick-off by Ramos and the backstops were pretty much the backbone all day
  12. So back-to-back half-innings [b-11, T-12] with bases-loaded/one-out ... and neither produces a run!!
  13. Good thing we're at home here cuz this is looking like one of those 'last team to score wins' games.

Stay Tuned OK, so it wasn't a three-run homer, although it was a tie-breaker so I'm claiming victory here regardless.
  15. Buck Farmer ... Really?!? What, was the name Cletus Hayseed already taken? Full name: George Runie Farmer of Atlanta, Georgia
  16. Since we're playing Detroit, Syndergaard: struck out nine tonight, nine tonight, nine tonight He struck out nine tonight, nine tonight, nine tonight
  17. Veteran pick-ups with 3R come-from-behind or tie-breaking HRs as their first NYM HR Rajai Davis -- Check Carlos Gomez -- Check Hecchavarria -- Check Altherr -- Probably before the weekend is out. Stay Tuned
  18. Nice depth signing. He was an all star last year so hard to complain about a minimum deal! While three different teams* pay the other twenty-odd million dollars * combo of Dodgers, Padres, & Reds
  19. Atherr is one of those uber-athletes who only occasionally matched that to actual baseball skills. On the other hand, BVW clearly has a line on bringing aboard discarded veterans who almost immediately hit late-inning 3R HRs, so it's just a matter of when not if.
  20. I always heard it as 'Paper Bag' without reading the lyrics. What I'm not sure of, however, was whether he was drinking out of that paper bag or if that was the one with the chocolate cake in it.
  21. So which one of us is assigned to be up and poised by their keyboard at 2 AM to post the news of the firing? That is when they do these things, right?
  22. Frayed Knot wrote: Well this game isn't going to bust the 2 hour mark, but it'll come close. Actually, yes it did. ToG = 1:59
  23. Well this game isn't going to bust the 2 hour mark, but it'll come close.
  24. So following Granderson's HR we now know how many runs to get in the top of the 9th: Two.
