  1. So what's more "Burt Reynolds 80's"? Powder blue unis or sticking your hands down your powder blue uni pants? Schmitty is two for two there.
  2. =seawolf17 post_id=13088 time=1560650275 user_id=91] Related to former AAAA 1Bman Brad Pounders? Gotta be.
  3. StL 1st base coach trying to make the case that Pete was off the bag on the DP, but that appeal has about the same chance as Harrison Bader's "Who Me, out of the baseline?" plea from several innings (and hours) ago.
  4. Two runs, four baserunners, still no outs, and they've only hit one ball (semi-) hard this whole inning (two dinky shits plus a walk). And now DeYoung is up as the tying run [oe: Sac Fly]
  5. One more joke like that and I'll be asked to make my exodus.
  6. I don't like that this game has closed to 6-3 while the offense has gone into shut-down mode as if they're trying to just sit on the lead. Also not fond of the fact that it took just shy of two hours to get thru five innings. The ump injury had a little to do with it, but still. This Genesis Cabrera guy for StL looks pretty good ... at least in the beginning
  7. Meanwhile in Atlanta, JT Realmuto just banked a liner off pitcher Sean Newcomb's head. And not a glancing blow either as the carom took the ball high over the 3rd base dugout and off the netting there. Seemed to come out of it unhurt but was immediately removed anyway. 1-0 Braves in the 3rd as they make the pitching change. On Friday night, the Phils held several leads -- 5-1, and later 7-2 -- but wound up coughing up one in the 6th, two in the 7th, two more in the 8th, then three in the 9th to lose 9-8 So we're not the only ones with bullpen problems apparently. In Colorado, also on Friday, the Rox took a six run lead over the Padres into the 9th but allowed the Pads to tie it, and then gave up five more in the 12th Rox lead 9-3 after six, and 10-4 after seven. Final score = 16-12 in 12 innings in a 5+ hour Coors special
  8. Somebody needs to send this DeYoung guy on a trip down the river Styx
  9. I think I saw Noah on a can of paint recently. Oh yeah, and the Mets got five in the 1st to lead 5-1 Alonso's HR (w/2 on) is expected to land any minute now.
  10. It's not a documentary though, it was a five-part HBO dramatization of the events in April 1986 (and beyond).
  11. You bring in Familia in order to get some balls beaten into the ground. And it worked: Familia came into the game and Mets batters started beating balls into the ground.
  12. Alonso's running isn't going to win him any style points, but it gets the job done.
  13. It almost seems like a plot sometimes, one where the hitters, fielders, and pitchers conspire to see how the game can be sabotaged. Fielder: 'Hey I'm due to make an error this inning, but I'll only do it if you walk the leadoff hitter first' P: 'Sounds good to me. And this way when I follow up your error with my one big hit for the night it'll totally destroy the lead we had built up.' H: 'So I should fail to drive in any tack-on runs prior to this all, then?' P: 'Definitely, we don't want any lead too big for our pen to blow later on'

  15. So here's my question: - the completion of last night's game, which picks up in the bottom of the 9th of a tie game with Frazier, Ramos, and Rosario due up, is scheduled to begin at 6:10 So when the game ends at 6:12, are they just going to make the fans sit there and wait for the next 58 minutes?
  16. Alonso does that 3-6 move very well - whether it's as the start of an attempted GiDP or just a simple force play. But he makes good, and quick, decisions on those, and seems to make a strong accurate throw each time.
  17. =kcmets post_id=12827 time=1560438696 user_id=53] Haven't really been paying much attention to the other divisional standings as much as I normally do... didn't realize the Cards were as mediocre as us.
  18. Marshall was the first Met I remember -- probably the first ballplayer -- with long hair. Unlike today when it seems half the sports stars want to be rock/rap stars and many in the music business like to burnish their athletic cred, in the '60s the jocks and the 'freaks' were at polar ends of the spectrum so you were either part of the long hair set OR the crew-cut crowd with little or no overlap. Namath probably came the closest but even he wasn't hanging with the hippies. That all started to wear down a bit as the '70s went on and I remember Marshall coming into spring training with very long locks flowing out of the back of his helmet. Don't remember the specific year and much of it was chopped by the beginning of the season anyway IIRC, probably under team orders. But of course, no amount of MLB's conservative bloodlines could hold back the hair -- straight, 'fro or facial -- forever.
  19. Always. And now that we have Batty in the 'Batty for Baty' thread, our work here is done.
  20. BA/consistent contact is maybe the toughest thing to predict too. Even with a college player, predicting that he'll keep up, much less improve upon, a high contact rate through the lower then upper minors and finally into MLB, will probably be wrong more often than right. That JMcN had done just that through his first few years of minor league ball is what allowed Sickels to go out on a limb, so to speak, and suggest that "it wasn't impossible" he could continue to do so and wind up surpassing a utility role.
  21. Those are all reasonably accurate descriptions of the (to date) final product - not an easy task with a 12th round draft pick. As a still <1 year ML'er: the bat-on-ball/low-K/all-fields label holds up; power flashes itself (probably not 165 lbs anymore) but is only occasional; still not a 'patient' hitter but he makes that work for him; glove skills are all-around good but doubtful as a full-time SS (no shame in that as most amateur SS's move); speed is at least decent/good which helps turn singles into doubles, doubles into triples The difference has been what Sickels -- with the benefit of additional minor league time -- says as his final caveat: that his hit tool has "exceed(ed) that" of a utility guy. Jeff McNeil with a mediocre BA is a bench guy at best. Now, thru nearly 500 ML PAs, he's right at .333 with an walk rate (helped by his HBPs) of at least near average [.062 = .395 OBA] and his XBHs pushing his SLG/IsoS to .471/.138 all of which makes him (so far) a pretty damn good leadoff hitter who'd be an everyday regular on most teams.
  22. Between the Papi shooting and the resort illnesses (whatever they are) I'd say the Dominican tourist industry is taking a major hit.
  23. https://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/mets/brett-baty-mets-draft-1.32276788?utm_source=tw_spMets to sign Baty Physical scheduled, terms not yet known, expected to be finalized by the weekend (blah, blah).
