  1. "Poor Social Media Decisions" -- Hey, it could have been worse ... it could have been Donald Trump Jr.
  2. At least those Tyson/NYM photos, with the exception of the Piazza one, were all pre-rape conviction. Also, at Alonso's age, it's possible he has little or no knowledge of Tyson's past.
  3. =stevejrogers post_id=55846 time=1612967598 user_id=57] They were well within their rights to refuse to work with Gibson, but it is interesting that no public objections were made when it came to Tyson.
  4. Tyson's looking like: 'Who the fuck is this guy?' Tyson is one of those guys who's a media celebrity to the point where past transgressions are forgotten and/or ignored by many in the public and certainly by much of the infotainment business. John Gotti was like this back in the day. I mean, sure, his various criminal enterprises were a hidden tax built into many aspects of everyday life and every once in a while he'd have people who interfered with his plans murdered ... but those minor details weren't enough to stop some from seeing him as a folk hero, plus he was rich and dressed well so TV anchors were known to dampen their chairs while gushing about how the 'Dapper Don' was seen at the latest trendy restaurant the previous evening.
  5. I consider that to be good news ... especially seeing as how Bengie will turn 47 this summer.
  6. I gotta say, I find amusing this idea that Cohen is basing his spending decisions on how he thinks it might make the other owners feel. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=55755 time=1612851341 user_id=68] Do you also think that the Mets are worth what Cohen paid for based upon strict accounting principles?
  7. I think Cohen's pulling punches either to not annihilate his competitors or to send a signal that he won't be "had". Or, after spending, what?, somewhere around 1/5 of his wealth buying the team, he's opting to spend based on the revenue the club creates rather than spending at a pace that might require him to dump even more cash into it in the very first year, especially when you consider that the club's revenue was limited last year by a shortened season played without fans and conditions are uncertain heading into this season.
  8. The Andrus/Davis deal is a big time challenge trade, not to mention one between interesting name spellings. Sean Doolittle to the Reds for two years.
  9. I have memories of a ballplayer named Hunter Strickland ... just none of him as a NYM other than the fact that he was taller than Scott Strickland.
  10. Benjamin Grimm wrote: My biggest concern is about how Gary Cohen would pronounce his first name. As 'The Ballplayer formerly known as Formosa'
  11. JBJ was/is reportedly looking for a multi year deal. That's a deal-breaker IMO as far as what the Mets are looking for. Almora is your defensive replacement and (maybe) rejuvenated bat off the bench. A better/worse option than Marisnick? .... who knows.
  12. =Marshmallowmilkshake post_id=55439 time=1612483443 user_id=119]... I'd love to know if there is contract language about keeping his social media stuff under control.
  13. If nothing else, this story pretty much assures that the streak of former NYM managers not getting another managing job after leaving the Mets will continue. Post-Davey, only Jeff Torborg (briefly) and Bobby V (also briefly, at least on this side of the Pacific) ever managed an MLB club again. That doesn't imply very good choosing of candidates, and that the GM list has about the same track record echoes that point.
  14. This suspension obviously doesn't carry into the winter leagues as Cano is currently playing for the Dominican side against Puerto Rico in the annual season ending series that the Winter Leagues have each year.
  15. One problem is that too many sports fans are under the impression that team owners run their clubs out of the money in their personal bank accounts rather than on the revenues that the team itself generates. So I think what has some NYM fans carping about here is their fear that every dollar Cohen loses via some other venture will result in one fewer dollar to be spent on the Mets. I can already hear the crying when they learn of some piece of art he purchases and see that as the reason why we don't have a better second baseman. Yanqui fans used to do this with Steinbrenner all the time (at least during the years they were happy with him). They'd see a team like the Royals who, for a while anyway, were owned by WalMart heirs, and reasoned that the KCR payroll being lower than that of the Yanx was proof that those owners were pocketing money while George put his cash back into the club as if this were some sort of act of philanthropy on his part and that the huge disparities in revenues between the teams had nothing to do with the gap. Now Cohen's wealth certainly acts as a buffer which means he can take hits in any given year without having to scramble to cover shortfalls (a la the Wilpons - over the last decade especially) or even operate the club at a chosen degree of loss on a yearly basis if he so chooses. But most likely he's going to maintain a payroll based on the club's income and (short of some monumental calamity) his outside ventures will be completely irrelevant to the budget of the Mets.
  16. I was just about to mention those ... because for a 13th round draft pick who had two major injuries just as his career was getting started, he got some good mileage out of himself. Would have been nice had he not saved his two (overwhelmingly) best seasons for a division rival, but whatyagonnado?
  17. I'm extremely indifferent to the details of this story.
  18. mlb.com's (Jonathan Mayo) top 100: 10 - Mate Pearson - RHP Toronto 9 - Ke'Bryan Hayes - 3B, Pirates 8 - CJ Abrams - SS, Padres 7 - Bobby Witt - SS, Royals 6 - Mackenzie Gore - RHP, Padres 5 - Julio Rodriguez - OF, Mariners 4 - Jered Kelenic, OF, Mariners 3 - Spencer Tornelson - 3B/1B, Tigers 2 - Adley Rutschman C, Orioles 1 - Wander Franco, SS, Rays mlb.com's full list will be shown on the network on Feb 13
  19. C&C (Cash & Colavito) (172) knocked in more runs than (M&M) Mantle & Maris (169) that year (1961) and when Al Kaline [324/393/525] is your third best offensive player, you've got yourself a pretty good team.
  20. I don't know what to make of Rosenthal - he was good, though a bit short of great (WHIP = 1.25) during his first three full seasons (2013-15) - then his WHIP ballooned to 1.91 in 2016 as his H/9 and BB/9 skyrocketed - he seemed to be back to his old self in 2017 before missing all of 2018 to TJ surgery - he was beyond awful coming back, 26 BB in 15 IP ... bad with Detroit, worse in Washington - and then, as mentioned, bounced back in the partial 2020 campaign: 1.90 ERA and a 0.845 WHIP, essentially the best year of his career although encompassing just 24 IP split between KCR & SDP And he still won't turn 31 until the end of May
  21. So is that Schoendeinst on the far left? Then Matty Alou, Glenn Beckert?, Aaron & McCovey are obvious, Santo, Cleon, Bench, Rico Carty?
  22. Masahiro Tanaka's stint with the Yanx is over as he heads back to Japan to become a Rakuten Eagle I think Rakuten makes cheap insta-noodle dishes but I'm not sure. I don't think they make eagles. More interesting to note is that, behind Gerrit Cole, the Yanx appear to be relying on three reclamation projects who haven't pitched much lately. The 2-3-4 in their rotation could be the recently acquired Corey Kluber and Jameson Taillon, plus holdover/TJ-rehabbing Luis Severino. All three were good and promising at one point, but they also combined for just 17 ML starts / 85 IP in 2019 [Kluber = 7 /36; Taillon = 7 / 37; Severino = 3 /12] and just one start / one IP (Kluber) in 2020 The most recent ML appearances for each was: Kluber on 7/26/20; Severino on 9/28/19; Taillon on 5/1/19
  23. =Centerfield post_id=54982 time=1611805546 user_id=65] That's the only explanation. Why would they trade starting pitching?
  24. A Boy Named Seo wrote: Frayed Knot wrote: A Boy Named Seo wrote: Yeah I love how he starts off saying the Hall of Fame folks have been "kind and generous" and it ends with but your opinions don't matter and you don't know how to judge a player. Well his "kind and generous" is directed towards those who run the HoF. His issue is with those writers/gatekeepers whom he feels have slandered him or otherwise done him wrong. That's fine. He's still as much full of contradictions as he is full of shit, and is trying to act he doesn't want to be in the HOF because the HOF is about to reject him. His ego is as fragile as his idol's. And I'm certainly not defending the overall content of the piece, or of Shilling himself, merely trying to make distinctions about it. He's not pissed at the HoF itself but the writers who vote, although I have no idea what percentage of the 29 percent who didn't vote for him are doing so based on his politics which appears to be his main point even as he throws everything including the kitchen sink at the entire group. The only writer specifically mention is Shaughnessy and I have no idea as to the source or extent of their feud. So he's trying the tactic where he doesn't even give them one final shot at rejecting him next year which will leave any future yea/nay vote to 'real men' who actually know something about baseball, namely those on various veterans committees. I have no idea if that will go any better for him or not.
  25. I've been acting as if I'm the NYM GM for years now. Let's just say that the reviews have not been kind.
