  1. Not that I needed a lot of convincing on the name change, but the fact that Trump dislikes it just adds more ammo to the decision.
  2. And Mike Hargrove, tabbed with the less-than inventive but quite sportsy nickname of 'Grover', both played and managed in Cleveland - so it works that way too.
  3. Yeah, I was thinking that Crackers might stir up folks in the White Lives Matter group.
  4. I'm not sure if Bees was ever meant to represent the flying insects or whether it was just a shortened version of Braves. Back in the early days of baseball, nicknames were more informal and what you'd call a team might vary depending on the part of the city you lived in or which newspaper you read.
  5. The Braves aren't nearly in the same situation. - the word 'Braves' can at least be seen as complimentary, or at least not as generically insensitive - they don't have an embarrassingly cartoonish caricature as a logo - they do have an ongoing dialog with native representation in their region on the name and related topics - and while it's tough to stop fans intent on doing the chop, the team is no longer actively encouraging it during games
  6. The only thing I remember was a discussion on whether he was related to long-time (and probably now deceased) Chicago area sportswriter Bill Jauss Wouldn't have remember he was the bench coach or anything, nor do I have idea how his bench-coaching was. The bench itself was never set on fire during his tenure as far as I know, so he couldn't have been too bad.
  7. Jauss the facts ma'am And the facts are that I have no memory of him from the first time around.
  8. Well, not overpaying is a good way to run things no matter what the particular motivation and overpaying could be in dollars or in years or consist of a combo of both, all of which could make the McCann deal look better in the long run. Not that we Know Realmuto is going to get a deal that his next team will come to regret ... just throwing that out as a possibility. Personally I'm leaning towards the idea that Steve & Sandy wanted to put at least one signing on the board before too much time had passed and felt that waiting on one of the catchers ran the risk of both winding up elsewhere leaving S & S to contemplate not just the drop off from Plan 'A' to 'B' but the one to whomever qualifies as Plan 'C'
  9. He's not the Subway guy I hope.
  10. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=52073 time=1607795065 user_id=68] What am I missing here? That Steve Cohen just saved himself an amount of money that he probably makes in interest in two days alone without having to get out of bed?
  11. So it turns out that Somebody is hiring front office execs ... as the Phillies have hired Dave Dombrowski to run their club. Dombrowski, long of Detroit but more recently with Boston, had previously said he wasn't interested in the Philly job or in any other position. He was, he said, committed to Nashville where he recently moved and had given a promise to a group there that he would lead the effort to secure an MLB franchise for Music City either by expansion or relocation. But now it looks like he changed his mind. I also figure that he's essentially going to be doing Sandy's job there so there wouldn't really have been a fit for him here although it's unclear whether the Mets spoke to him or not.
  12. AA & AAA look to be more or less intact. A little musical chairs in changing affiliates and the always constant name change thing going on, but most of the cities active in 2019 will still be there in 2021
  13. And probably also better than Harry, Harry II (Skip), and Harry III (Chip) Carey.
  14. The 'High-A' teams line up as: VANCOUVER BC (TOR) BOWLING GREEN KY (TBR) ROME, GA (ATL) ABERDEEN MD (BAL) GREENVILLE SC (BOS) HUDSON VALLEY (WAPPINGERS FALLS) NY (NYY) LAKE COUNTY OH (CLE) QUAD CITIES IA (KCR) WEST MICHIGAN (DET) CEDAR RAPIDS IA (MIN) WINSTON-SALEM NC (CHW) LANSING MI (OAK) TRI-CITY WAS (LAA) EVERETT WA (SEA) BELOIT WI (MIA) WILMINGTON DE (WAS) JERSEY SHORE (PHI) APPLETON WI (MIL) PEORIA IL (STL) GREENSBORO NC (PIT) SOUTH BEND IN (CHC) DAYTON OH (CIN) HILLSBORO OR (ARZ) FORT WAYNE IN (SDP) GREAT LAKES (LAD) EUGENE OR (SFG) HICKORY NC (TEX) Rockies TBA ... Spokane WA Astros TBA ... Asheville NC I'm guessing that there will be three High-A leagues, maybe four. If so pick out the eastern squads and those are likely Brooklyn's opponents, but even then that league will probably be further broken into a north & south split because nobody is going to want to fly A-ball players from the northeast down to Florida and it's too far to bus.
  15. So Binghamton survives which is contrary to the rumors over the last year and a half. As far as Pt St Lucie goes, did the entire Florida State League get demoted from High-A to Low or did they join the Sally League And what League is Coney Island playing in? oe: so the official site of Minor League Baseball is listing all the new (and existing) affiliations by their level but none by the league - so this sounds like a complete revamping of the leagues which is unlikely to resemble anything like the structure of the recent past.
  16. Chad is onto something though about how the HoF never seems to get the 'Veterans Committee' (or whatever they're calling it this week) quite right. The makeup is in constant flux , and not just the members themselves who should change but the size of the group, the eras that they're covering, the frequency of their votes, their supposed mission, or the members themselves seem unclear as to what their mission is ... and that's before you even get to the crony-ism, the lack of transparency, and the just plain odd choices at times.
  17. Edgy MD wrote: Adding a DH to the NL is something that has made sense from a competitive standpoint for a long time, is something the players have wanted for a long time, and is something the owners also want. I wish folks would back up such statements, instead of just stating them as fact. Yeah, I was going to say the same. - Adding a DH to the NL is something that has made sense from a competitive standpoint for a long time -- Really! How so? - is something the players have wanted for a long time -- some players, yes, probably even a majority. But it's hardly a universal feeling and some are quite adamant against it. - and is something the owners also want -- again, 'some' is probably correct, but not all and in this case not necessarily even a majority
  18. Olney (Robert Stanbury Olney III) grew up on a dairy farm in Vermont, so that would be the prize for anyone who cares to take him up on that bet. Then the only question that remains is whether you'd consider gaining ownership of a dairy operation in north-central Vermont to be a 'win'.
  19. You had me at 김
  20. And without even getting into a money thing or how Cohen might think he's supposed to act as the new kid on the block, we're not going to get every FA we want because there are 29 other teams out there and many of them want the same guys we want for the same reasons.
  21. The fact that McCann would arrive on our doorsteps with a stamp of approval right there on the package from none other than https://nypost.com/2020/11/30/mets-tendering-steve-matz-would-be-the-right-move/SUPER JOE McEWING means ... I dunno, maybe something, maybe not. Super Joe has been a ChiSox coach for the past couple seasons. “[McCann is] the ultimate pro, on and off the field,'' McEwing said by phone on Friday. “He's a leader and runs the pitching staff like a second manager.” “The way he communicates with the [pitching] staff and teammates, you won't have to worry about anything, ... He wants that responsibility.” ... “He's a bridge to analytics, ...Being able to combine the information with the human element, he knows how to get the best out of each individual. And when they don't have something, he adjusts.”
  22. I've recently developed more of an appreciation for Lightfoot than ever before after going a large chunk of my life knowing little beyond his handful of radio hits. So when I heard about this one a while ago it became something I wanted to see. But in this era of fractured availability it is an Amazon property while I'm on a Netflix feed so it's possible that it will be years before seeing it unless I want to begin tithing to Mr. Bezos.
  23. Some of the photos are larger than others; Accardo's is larger than large.
  24. Except that at least part of McCann's hitting is due to being platooned (much better vs LHPs: OPS+ 135 vs 89) and not having to shoulder the mantle of being an everyday catcher. iow, we shouldn't expect an automatic doubling of his stats simply by making him the lead backstop. That said, I think he's a worthwhile target to pursue even as I admit that virtually all of my knowledge on him is based on recent stuff I've read rather than any first hand knowledge.
  25. We have a very large assistant pitching coach.
