All good points: Nixon might be a "gritty veteran with post-season experience" they want on the bench and Marlon did indeed sign a 2-year deal. Thanks for the explanation about the 25-man roster.

I don't want to be presumptuous about the playoffs (Monday's game is still fresh in my mind) or tempt the Baseball Gods, but at some point, Jerry & Omar have to consider the 25-man roster for September 1, when the post-season roster is set (DL'd players being the exception). I will throw out moves that the team will have to consider and some that might happen and am interested in your thoughts: Wagner returns from the DL: send down Kunz. Church returns from the DL: send down Evans. Marlon Anderson returns from the DL: waive him; I think they'd rather have Murphy than Marlon, even though you lose a veteran off the bench for the playoffs in favor of a rookie. Two Orioles have cleared waivers and either or both could be added for the post-season--Kevin Millar (righty) and Aubrey Huff (lefty). Cancel and A. Reyes could be sent down if that happens.

Back from Nats Park. AG/DC correctly conveyed the feeling of "Shea South" in the 9th. It was a wonderful sight. Dopey Nats fans (redundant) did the wave. Really. The guy behind said that they never do it so it must be the Mets fans. I turned around, gave him a look and said "Please." The 7th & 8th were nerve racking. Duaner looked very good. There was a husky Mets fan with orange hair. As he walked by me, I said "Rusty Staub" and he laughed. Of course, he must hear that all the time. TMF: yes, Teddy lost. To me, the President's Race is too predictable. Abe Lincoln wants it more. As we left, my younger son (15) and I walked out and sang "Takin' Care of Business." That was special. Then a guy with a trumpet near the Metro was playing "New York, New York."

We're off to a flying start on MASN: Don Sutton pronounced A. Reyes' first name as "AR-JEN-IS."

Today's NY Post says that SI was wrong: The Mets shot down a report by SI.com yesterday that a franchise in the upstart United Football League could play at Citi Field next season and be owned by Fred Wilpon. "We took a meeting with them, but that's not going to happen," Mets VP David Howard said.

I hope that was the case metirish--I just don't understand how most other teams, including the MFYs, got something when our team got nothing and needed something in the 'pen so badly.

I would. What's the expression? Stupidity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. That's the Mets bullpen these days. "That's easy crap to type when you're pissed" I wouldn't say that about your opinion. This is the CPF, not a MFY board.

MGIM nails it. Bradford was available but either the Orioles wanted too much or Omar didn't want him enough, if at all. Whichever it was, Omar has done nothing to improve this team this season. He was lucky that Santana "fell back" (his words) to the Mets, and got lucky with Tatis, but he hasn't made any trades this season which leads to disasters like we saw today. The bullpen helped get Willie fired and it will do the same to Jerry. We keep hearing that Omar will work the waiver wire but a) he hasn't done so yet and even if he picked up somebody tonight, it wouldn't change today's result. He has been passive to a fault.

In today's "Monday Morning Quarterback", Peter King writes that the Wilpon's are planning on owning a team in a new football league and that team will play at CitiField: "The UFL is scheduled to kick off -- and I use "scheduled'' because one never knows what can happen with startup leagues -- a year from now, with a season that will last until Thanksgiving. Huyghue said there will be six teams: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Orlando, New York and Hartford. Yes, Mark Cuban will be one of the owners, as, apparently, will be the Wilpon group of New York. The New York team, interestingly, will play at the new Citi Field, home of the Mets.
