  1. ="Valadius"]Wow, I was almost three months old when this game took place. Thanks a lot for that, Valadius! I remember that Bill Buckner showed up and I don't think that anybody would have faulted him if he stayed away. Also, when he was introduced (the players were introduced as if it was a playoff game), he ran out from the dugout with his hat held high. The fans would have sarcastically cheered him but when he did that, he got a genuine ovation. Since that game, I have always respected Buckner. Edited to reflect the fact that G-Fafif is smarter than me and that my memory stinks. Where are my car keys?
  2. This crew only works one game a week, so you'd think they could avoid missing pitches and screwing up, as they just did (showing one thing while telling us it was something else).

  4. A lot of letters on the Rockies roster: Koshansky, Podsednik, Quintanilla, Tulowitzki, Torrealba. (How's that for great baseball analysis? It's my first IGT in a week so I'm rusty.)
  5. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Joe Morgan believes that this week's All Star Game will be the most exciting in the last 20 years. Why? Because it will be played in Yankee Stadium. So why'dja stop at 20 years, Joe? His comment seemed like a make-up under orders from ESPN brass after his statement, discussed earlier tonight, that the A-S game isn't as exciting as it used to be because the players don't play for more than two innings.

  7. Zito says that it will be "fun" to pitch today and also says that the Mets "badmouthed" him. I found this in today's Chronicle: All week, the tabloids here have gone cuckoo over the impending divorce of Alex Rodriguez and his wife, Cynthia, as well as their alleged love quadrangle with rockers Madonna and Lenny Kravitz. Wednesday's New York Post, for instance, wrote about a stripper who supposedly had an affair with A-Rod. The story quoted friends of the woman describing Rodriguez as "beautiful," "very attractive" and "well-endowed." Barry Zito, who pitches in today's series finale at Shea Stadium, acknowledged that stuff such as that played into his decision to sign with the Giants rather than the Mets, who also pursued him. "I knew that would be a factor, the media markets," Zito said. "You get exposed and you don't really have a personal life anymore. It becomes so much more inflated than the reality is, which is, we're just playing ball. I think buying into the lie that we're doing something so important, I think it hurts our performance because we feel our performance is determining the fate of the world. A lot of times in huge media markets you can start to think that." Zito has seen the A-Rod stuff in the papers and said, "It's just a shame. I don't know what the real story is. Only a limited amount of people do. It's just a shame that society is geared this way where we put someone's details of their lives or problems on the front page. It's a shame that people are entertained more with the downfalls and struggles of certain peoples in the spotlight than they are with their successes." Zito can only imagine how he would have been treated in New York if he signed with the Mets for $126 million and started a season 4-12. Last year, Zito was 11-13, with two of his wins against the Mets. In fact, he pitched seven shutout innings in a victory at Shea and acknowledged he throws with a little extra motivation against the Mets because he believes team officials bad-mouthed his abilities two winters ago in a bid to lower his signing price. He noted he won his first 11 decisions against the Rangers, who drafted him in 1998 but, in Zito's mind, tried to lowball him. "It's always fun to go out and pitch well against the team that said certain things about you," he said. "Now that I'm kind of pitching the way I should be, it will be fun." http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/09/SPIF11ME2P.DTL (emphasis added)
  8. It feels like a playoff win. A friend was emailing me for updates while on a plane. The game was tied while he was getting on the plane and he "forgot" to shut off his Blackberry.
  9. Do you hear the drums? It's FERNANDO!
  10. Burrell v. Heilman: .308, 4 for 13, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB.

  13. I looked at a Rays board and they want us to vote for Longoria and they'll vote for Wright. Voting for Longoria keeps Giambi out of the game.
  14. Adam Rubin with an update: it's still raining: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/
  15. John Delcos July 6th, 2008 at 4:55 pm The game is supposed to resume at 5:10.-JD John Delcos July 6th, 2008 at 4:59 pm Never mind that last post. As soon as they took the tarp off it started to rain again. It's back on.-JD

  17. Yeesh. I guess he's gone when and if Moises returns.
  18. 1 to nothing, but it's been 2:45 so far.
  19. 110 pitches, but w/2 out and nobody on... I'd let him start the inning.

SteveJRogers wrote: ="bmfc1"]Great work by MLB: because of the rule that every team must have a player on the team, Mitchell Report star (and noted liar) Tejada makes the team but David Wright, a player that MLB should be showcasing, does not. Tejada was picked by the players. You want to be annoyed, be annoyed at them voting Aramis Ramirez over Wright. Valid point SJR. It bugs me to see Tejada, and a big-time jerk like Milton Bradley, in a showcase game, but it's not a contest of virtuosity.
  21. Wright's up for the "26th" spot in the fan vote.

  23. Marlon reached further to hit that pitch then he did to catch that flyball.
  24. And only Wagner!
  25. Wagner made the All-Star team. And that's it. No Wright. No Reyes.
