Reading a book called https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/51312349The Wax Pack: On the Open Road in Search of Baseball's Afterlife about an 80's kid, who at the age of 34, buys a pack of '88 Topps then hits the road to meet all of the "wax packers" and see what they're up to. Some former Mets in here including Gooden, Mazzilli, Garry Templeton, Vince Coleman, Gary Pettis and maybe a couple other dudes I forgot were ever Mets. The book's currently clinging to a 3-star rating for different reasons, but the Coleman chapter was weird for a different reason. After he introduces the player, he refers to him the rest of the way only as "Van Go", a shortened version Vincent Van Go, a nick I'd heard for him a couple of times, but was never in cement for me like The Big Unit, The Crime Dog or El Presidente, etc. Is Vincent Van Go on the forefront of your brain when you think of Vince Coleman? For the record, in the Gooden chapter, he annoyingly refers to him as Doc the entire time, even the little kid version who, c'mon, that's Dwight.

CRUSHING. I like the photo in OFF THE WALL better but also thought the Mazeika pic detracts.

Mets were away at San Diego some hours after I was born, so Wayne Garrett celebrated my birth by grounding out to second to start the game. Thanks a lot, Wayne. He made up for it, though, with 2 hits and the Mets would collect 17 altogether on the way to a 7-2 win behind a 7-inning, 2-hit, 1-run gem by George Stone. Stone also collected 2 hits and an RBI and was surely the CPF Schaeffer POTG. Happy birthday, me.

Watched the heartwarming Mets holiday vid and I'm now curious about the Mr. Met/Mrs. Met family tree. So Mr. Met has parents (also Mr. Met and the wife Mrs. Met) who live in Florida or something. And there is also the younger Mrs. Met (née Lady Met). I know I'm an out-of-towner, but is the former Lady Met our loveable big-headed icon's wife? Does this family tree look like a cactus? Or is "Met" just the familial surname and the maiden names for both Mrs. Mets was Sanchez or Smith or something else? As reported in the Roster Central thread, my boy Tommy got drafted by Seattle in the minor league rule V draft, then shipped to Baltimore for cash. I didn't keep up on him enough here, but he was a good follow on Twitter, a fun and creative 25-year old dude. He pitched well in AA last year, striking out 18 in 15 1/3 and looks to be a decent shot to get a major league cup of coffee in '22, especially now that he's with a crappy Baltimore team. But baseball's not his only passion, or the only thing he's good at. He played with the podcast medium for a bit and maybe got bored with it, and is now a huge NFT guy, even creating his own pieces. Sure, but Cano is a gargantuan question mark. And after the great squirrel incident of 2021 coupled with his shit performance, McNeil could easily red-ass his way out of town in a trade. I like JD and I think he could get 300+ ABs moving around between third, left, DH and filling in for injuries. But if someone called asking about his availability, I'd surely take that call. TL;DR there's definitely room for Bryant on this team at third or the outfield.

I know I'm in the minority, but I got a huge kick out of the thumbs down thing and will always think of that when Javy comes up. I know fans have the right to boo and yyybbb, but why do players have to just take it? They don't. A quiet mirror of discontent back on the fans was perfect until its meaning became known. So talented on both sides of the game and outrageously fun to watch. I'll miss him a lot.

Max has a deranged winning-over-everything persona that is hopefully less raccoon red-assery and more like dudes just afraid of putting in less than he does. I'm sure we'll see a bit of a decline, but I'm really stoked on his acquisition.

The last 3 bats the Mets signed will be in their age 33 season and Max will be 37, so they're outlandishly in "win now" mode, so I say fuck it, throw Stro some dough (and Javy while you're at it).
