  1. Yeah I always thought it was the barrel crossing the opposite base line, but I guess that's not right. Per the Athletic, there hasn't been a definition of a swing (and subsequently a check swing) on the rules until now. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/354170/2018/05/15/whats-the-rulebook-definition-of-a-swing-in-baseball-there-isnt-one-but-there-should-be/ https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5873851/2024/10/26/check-swing-challenge-system-explained/
  2. Check swing review is apparently being tested in the minors this year (and has been used in the AFL for a couple years). I like this in theory, but the application feels a little strange to me, so I'm trying to warm up to it. The threshold for a swing is 45 degrees, or parallel to the opposite base line, but the base line itself is not a determining factor. So, if the swing is greater than 45 degrees, the call should be a strike. If the swing is less than 45 degrees, the call should be a ball. The interesting part to me (if I've got a grasp on it) is that it doesn't seem to matter if the bat crosses the baseline at all, which is where I always thought we needed to be looking from, but that's not the case. Apparently our own former farmhand Drew Gilbert was the first to challenge a check swing call in 2024: Hyeseong Kim challenged one Sunday and where the plane is drawn is a bit perplexing to me. Is that based on where he's standing? What do you make of all this shit?
  3. Gun to my head, I guess I'd say "floor" in this binary scenario but that's just cause I've got a gun to my head. Nothing about a cap will improve my experience as a fan. Billionaires would be relieved of spending more money to compete and that wouldn't assure any club of a title or make things cheaper for the John Q. Lunchbuckets amongst us. But I'm pretty damn confident the "poor" MLB billionaires would use a salary floor as a means to justify price increases for the fans so we'd likely be getting the shaft either way.
  4. I love that guy behind the dugout that Gelbs has become best homies with, but it's a sad state of affairs when that's the most endearing and engaging part of the game. Let's go Mets. Please. Do fucking something.
  5. I don’t deserve this anxiety. You don’t deserve this anxiety. I’m gonna check out Rooster on HBO. God speed, Mets.
  6. That was fantastic. If Wright doesn’t get the manager job, I hope he and Gelbs play buddy cops in a season of True Detective.
  7. 2-run homer for the Angels in the first. I’d rather be at the pub watching fman and wolfie.
  8. It’s crazy to think the Angels had Trout and Ohtani for years and won jack.
  9. Since this is the In-Gig-Thread, I can confirm that seawolf has jumped on stage and joined fman. Song TBD.
  10. I thought for a second his shirt said "BONER" and that woulda been soooooo Fman.
  11. Polanco is running but no timeline. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://sny.tv/articles/mets-luis-robert-jr-lower-back-tightness-jorge-polanco-progress
  12. Dr. Google is not terribly optimistic for a speedy return:
  13. The thread title made me lol
  14. I love Lindor. He's not been right early on, physically or mentally it seems. But he's a great player, seemingly a really nice and good-hearted person, and I'm sure "My Girl" is a tribute to his wife or daughters or both. He's the girl daddiest #girldad ever and I'm happy he's on our team. He represents the New York Mets really well.
  15. I guess I'm optimistic that the team will play better because there's simply too much talent for them to keep being this unbelievably shitty. Before tonight, they have a 139 games left. To get to 85 wins and sniff a wild card, they need to go 78-61 the rest of the way, a .561 winning percentage. That doesn't feel outrageous. Gonna be a wild summer!
  16. Lindor using “Stand By Me” tonight seems like a very direct message. Heard, Francisco, heard.
  17. Soto returning to the lineup is like 80s movie parents who come home early to find the kids trashed the house
  18. This is obviously the "Pete Alonso Sucks" thread. He went 2-3 with a walk yesterday, including a go-ahead 2-run homer in the 7th.
  19. I really hope Pete doesn't go the way of Chris Davis (I still love that big, hairy baby), but the one thing that jumped out to me amongst all his early bad numbers is his bat speed. He's consistently been elite (at least 75MPH and 90th percentile and above for several years running). So far this year he's at 73.1, a 2.3 MPH drop from last year that moves him from elite to above-average (66th percentile). He's still strong enough to have elite exit velocities when he hits it, but if he bat is really starting to slow down...
  20. When they announce McNeil, everyone in Citi should slam their hat and yell FUCK at the top of their lungs. A finer tribute you'll never see.
  21. That's La Catrina. She's a prominent symbol for Dia de los Muertos. The candles seem to represent an ofrenda, which is a little shrine for departed loved ones. We have one in our house.
  22. I met someone from Wisconsin today and asked her if people there say "Wisco" and she answered with a resounding, enthusiastic yes. She loved the new Brewers shirts. That one's probably my favorite of this batch, but I do think stuff like Wisco and BMORE and PGH are dumb. I think it should be said that the Rangers pandering to Hispanic fans with "TEJAS" should fuck right off after they pulled a statue of a racist Texas Ranger out of storage and propped it up in their stadium. They're the absolute worst org.
