  1. My cell phone [via Jon Heyman via twitter] sez that Bart has agreed terms with another team. Edit: someone wanna learn me how the 'tweet' button works with creating/editing a post here? Edit Edit: Bart to the Braves.
  2. That's promising, though I'd expect Boras to say nothing less. This surgery shouldn't affect his velocity, should it?

In his twenties he started mixing Rice with Velandia, and next thing you know, he's completely strung out on Matsuzaka. Such a sad story. I knew that guy. He would always Bogar the good Salas. Would never even Offer, Man.
  4. Some of the stuff we're seeing in the playoffs this year (using closers in higher leverage situations) was stuff that Ben and Sam did when they took over an indy league team a couple years ago (and documented in this fine book -> https://www.amazon.com/Only-Rule-Has-Work-Experiment/dp/1627795642). They signed and drafted guys based on stats only, tried zany shifts, and juggled the closer role, other stuff. Hardest part seemed to get people to buy in and do stuff "that you just don't do in baseball". Agreed that this would have the greatest chance to not get struck down immediately if they pulled it off in the low minors/indies. But, yeah, why not try it!

And it's more fun to watch a team that had so-so talent and crappy luck win 87 games than to watch talented teams like the 2007 and 2008 Mets underachieve with 88 and 89 wins. It's been a good season, and anything after today is gravy. Funny thing - since the Mets and Giants were both 87-75, we'd still be playing this game under the old single wild card playoff rules. But it would be regular season game 163 instead of post-season. I agree with all of this. I want them to win the WS as much as I did last year, but I had a CAHNfident expectation with the '15 team that I don't have with this bunch. These guys are just a slot machine that keeps spitting out coins. Can't believe they even won this many, but I still want 12 more.
  6. No doubt, especially when you already lied to the boss about why you gotta leave early and begged the sitter to come on short notice.
  7. metirish wrote: Great picture, that woman is the club chef .... A friend purchased two tickets on Stub Hub Tuesday afternoon, $180 a ticket, transaction went through only for him to get a email later saying tickets were gone, he was so upset and rightly so. Did he get swindled? Or the tix just get pulled?
  8. As long as we're alive, I want it all.
  9. All good, yall. Cespedes is wearing the magick blonde on his head now, too. Theresa Corderi (@bumblelina1) • Instagram photo WWW.INSTAGRAM.COM 1,729 likes, 41 comments - bumblelina1 on October 5, 2016: "#BlondesHaveMoreFun".
  10. No to dis on poor J-Lo, he's been a fine stand-in for us when he needed a warm-blooded first baseman. But damn, if we had to have that extra LH bat in the lineup, I wish we coulda worked Kelly Johnson in there instead of Loney. Make a fool of me, James.
  11. B v P: http://dailybaseballdata.com/cgi-bin/dailyhit.pl?date=1005 Stuff that jumps out at me: Kelly Johnson hitting a cool .300 in 20 ABs (also stole a base off him!). TJ at first, Kelly at 2nd?? Ty Kelly's all, "eff that, I'm hitting 1.000 against him!". Yep, 1-1 with a walk. Bruce has the most PAs against Bummy, but is just 3-23 (but does have one of two homers that current Mets have hit against him). The other homer by a current Met belongs to Rene, who is 2-3 against MB in his career, while Td'A is 0-4. Yo seems to have hit him hardest, .300/.462/.400 with a double and 3 walks. Need you big time, bro. Other probable starters: Asdrubal 3-7, 2 RBI Reyes 3-9, 2 runs, SB Grandy 0-3, BB Moral of the story: he's tough on lefties but this is doable.
  12. I wanted to write in "Wilmer with a jacked up wrist" but went Duda on the small chance he loses one, or that the defensive shifts on him might create some baserunning craziness [via Muffy last post season].
  13. Edgy MD wrote: What's the name of the teammate who grabbed him as he was going down face first? Because the only Mariah song coming to my mind is "Hero." Good Q. Burdick was shortstop, so I'm guessing 3bman. Can't get a good look at his number, so I'll just celebrate the 2nd Mariah Carey nod in this thread and leave it be.
  14. Looks like we've got a perforated Colon. Colon Dealing With a Tendon Injury in Foot Would explain why he had nothing in his last start. says it's been two weeks though. Some hard-core borderline illegal pain killers and he'll battle through it. Thought I never thought I'd have in 2016: "If we lose Bartolo, we are completely fucked."
  15. Checking in on my Mr. Irrelevant to see if he's been cut and now works at a Waffle House, but he's sticking around, and even had a cup of coffee at AA this year. Not sure how, really. He had a .343 OPS in 64 PA at low A and then a .671 at high A before he got the jump to Binghamton where he went hitless in 6 ABs. Maybe they saw his OPS jumped over 300 points and were all, "HOLY SHIT!" but didn't see where it jumped from. His career slash lines across 3 seasons now stand at .193/.311/.293 (.604 OPS) in 528 PA. He's hit 5 homers, stolen 11 bags, and struck out 142 times. Must have a glove made of gold or saved Jeff Wilpon in Desert Storm. Some shit. Cruising his twitter feed, it looks like he had a couple cool moments for Columbia, including a walk-off double in August and this pretty cool catch below: Looks like he turns 21 in a coupla weeks, so HBD, kid. Hope you make some strides and can keep playing baseball for money for as long as you can. His twitter bio sez "Chasing a dream". Keep chasing, just not out of the strike zone.
  16. Some snaps I grabbed during the pre-game while squinting through watered eyes to see my cell phone:
  17. Wow, this turned to shit in a hurry.
  18. Lets win 2-1 in an hour and half and everybody hug everybody afterwards.
  19. Hooolyyyy crap that was sad.
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: A Boy Named Seo wrote: I wondered if that had anything to do with anything, but I think not. Pitching Monday instead of Sunday, if anything, makes it less likely he'd hang out on a boat late Sunday night/early Monday AM, IMO. He was prob going on that boat anyway. I'm not sure I follow. He died on a Saturday night/Sunday morning. If he was scheduled to pitch a Sunday afternoon game, he probably (I would think!) would have been in bed instead of on that boat at 3 a.m. So today's game was "canceled" and not "postponed" which suggests it won't be made up. If the Marlins finish a half game out of the wild card, they'll have to circle back and play the game on Monday, which could be problematic if other tiebreaker games need to be played that day. Yeah I forgot what day it was and everything made less sense after. Nevermind me.

  22. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I can't help but wonder if the Marlins switching his start from Sunday to Monday cost him his life. Pitching Monday instead of Sunday, if anything, makes it less likely he'd hang out on a boat late Sunday night/early Monday AM, IMO. He was prob going on that boat anyway. Aside from the obvious reasons this is terrible, it's also huge gut-punch to baseball because his electric personality really was helping nudge baseball away from the staid, boring, play-the-white, er... right way. When was the last time baseball (or any sport) lost an elite player just starting to ride the wave of his prime?? Really bummed over this.
  23. Man, we got the absolute best out of Pat Mahomes, didn't we. I dug him on that 99 team. And what a career Pelf has carved out being the go-to, below-average, innings-eating #5 starter... Wonderful work if you can get it, and slated to make another $8M next year in Detroit, too. Tim Lincecum wishes he could be Mike Pelfrey right now.
  24. I wanna trade Jay Bruce for J Mascis.
