  1. Edgy MD wrote: Interesting that there's no co-author listed. He had two previous books were co-written with Mike Bryan, and one that was co-written with Matt Silverman that I figured was just Matt with Keith lending his name. I remember "If at First". I missed the other one. Maybe that's why I'M is in bold red. No more of this coddling, co-author crap. Maybe it's unvarnished Keith, which would be awesome.
  2. While looking for Greg's Piazza book, I saw that Keith has a memoir due for publication in Oct 3, '17. This already news to everyone? It did not blip my radar. Amazon -> https://smile.amazon.com/Im-Keith-Hernandez-ebook/dp/B01LL8BUWG/ref=pd_sbs_351_4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=R89R07F5WVR8BSN1B2FR
  3. Maybe I missed it in this thread, but anyone know on average how many intentional walks there are per game? And I wonder what the average time of an IBB AB is? I would guess prob around 30-45 seconds or something. A minute tops?
  4. So much stupid shit being bandied by the League, good on Tony Clark and the players for #resisting hard. Balls in play are way down. Yes, all those super boring starts where Thor mows down 13 hitters. Sooo00000oooo boring. Last year's games were 4 and a half minutes longer than 2015. Lots of good ways to shave those off (and prob a few more) without going to pitch clocks, and all that other lame nonsense. But I think Manfred kind of wants gimmicky, lame shit to attract youngbloods who think baseball is hella boring. I don't think he 100% has the same concerns we do. Have you been to an NBA pre-game where fireworks explode out of the backboard like it's Wrestlemania? Something tells me Manfred would LOVE that. Cutting adverts between innings will never happen, but it's disingenuous for the League to pretend that there are never times where the ump is holding up action until the network comes back from break. MLB could shorten all in-game commercial spots by 5 seconds or even 3 seconds, and bam, there's your 4-6 minutes back. I know there was talk in previous years on shortening breaks between innings, but not sure if any #ExecutiveOrders were signed. Then make your batters stay in the box, cut down on warm-up pitches, and the other common sense stuff, and you probably get to 10 minutes. 10 minutes most fans probably don't even notice, btw. Oh, and Adam Silver paved the way for uni ads in American pro sports, I'm afraid. I hope baseball holds out til I'm dead, but I wouldn't place a hefty bet on that one.
  5. You guys hear about this one? Apparently Dexter Fowler's wife is Iranian, and he made an innocuous comment about his wife not getting to see her sister due to the travel ban. “It’s huge,” Fowler told ESPN’s Mark Saxon. “Especially any time you’re not able to see family, it’s unfortunate.” A "True Cards Fan" FB page posted a link to an article with the headline "Cardinals Outfielder Expresses Discontent With President Trump" and since it's Facebook, all hell broke loose and the comments instantly devolved into a shit-storm containing, among other things, lots of barely literate and racist comments, many of which have since found their way to his personal FB and Twitter pages. This Jeff Passan piece for Yahoo Sports breaks it all down using some of the actual FB comments from that post. Cardinals fans like to call themselves the Best Fans in Baseball, a sobriquet onto which they hold dearly. They pride themselves on being educated baseball fans – clapping at the proper time, cheering when the opponent makes a great play. It’s all very self-congratulatory and not entirely warranted, and it seems harmless until it’s the ideal against which they hold and judge players. This happens regularly, and it hews to a particular set of standards. A Cardinal is scrappy. A Cardinal is a fighter. A Cardinal plays the game the right way, which they especially appreciate when his hustle makes up for a comparative lack of physical gifts. A Cardinal is David Eckstein and Stubby Clapp and Bo Hart. A Cardinal is also white.
  6. Makes Major League debut in July. Gives up 7 earned run in 2/3 of an inning and is demoted to Vegas after the game. Wins the first annual and final "Health Bell Thigh Look-Alike Contest" in August.
  7. My crystal ball sez similar to wolfie. Career high in appearances (~80) but slight regressions in ERA and K/9 from his great levels last year to still pretty good levels (ERA=3.30, K/9=9.0). Option picked up for 2k18. Will forget his ID one day in April and won't be allowed entry to Citi Field because "Yeah, right, stringbean", as the security guard will put it.
  8. Rock doc about Colin Hay and the meteoric ascension of Men at Work, and his fall to, and climb out of obscurity as a solo artist. All the critical, pre-requisite VH1 'behind the music' stuff was there: too much money too soon, alcohol, drugs, resentment, ex-wives, lawsuits, etc. So the formula wasn't unique or anything, but he's a super likeable guy and and I was rooting for him, even if he didn't really want or need me to. $3 bucks rental, Amazon Prime. Not sure where else it's available. [youtube:33mo7y3n]uzdQ0KVwXCI[/youtube:33mo7y3n]
  9. "That is definitely Lucas Duda."
  10. This post has been here almost 2 hours. Cooby's slippin.
  11. Def older for the starters, but the youth of the reserves tends to balance that out some, and those guys should get plenty of time when the starters inevitably get hurt. I went to this website ->>> http://www.baseballheatmaps.com/disabled-list-data/ and quickly made a spreadsheet for those guys JCL listed below using their data. I have no idea if their data is accurate or if I copied/pasted it all right, but anyway. Like, David Wright had no DL days in 2014?? Man, Travis needs to stay on the field.
  12. Another truly layman's observation, but guys today never (hardly ever?) cheat up a few inches the box. Most even have their back spike a few inches outside the batter's box. Those extra inches are probably necessary for the extra velocity nowadays, but cheating up a little can help catch 12-6 curves before they dip below the knees (or curves at the knees destined for the dirt), and hard sliders before break your bat on either side of the plate. I don't think moving up a little in the box in ST would mean he's trying to become Tony Gwynn or anything, and would may help him stay on top of some breaking stuff, a bit more realistic than hoping he never swings at one out of the zone. If he's getting burned by heat over and over, just scrap the whole thing. Signed, Genius on the Internet
  13. Where is the absolute worst place you can go searching for an informed opinion? From anonymous internet commenters. "what is your opinion of lucas duda as a baseball player" "also can you put on a shirt" ... is funny.
  14. Does adderall count as an amphetamine? I don't think too many people use amphetamines recreationally anymore like Johnny Cash or anything, but kids today do love thier adderall. Regardless, these kids are professionals. Don't put illegal shit in your body, dummy.
  15. "its ok our kind are the founding fathers of a better tomorrow" This made me LOL a few good times. http://www.amazinavenue.com/2017/1/6/14174338/finding-a-consensus-opinion-on-lucas-duda
  16. This was pretty great. I knew I thought Liam was a dickhead going in, but Noel was a dickhead in his own, different way, too. But both strangely sort of likeable, fun, assholes at the same time. You would probably be both happy and worried if they showed up to a party at your house. JCL alluded to Noel as the surprise hit song-writer and it was kinda funny to watch Liam get jealous and pout and not participate when Noel was blossoming. Especially when Noel is singing lead on 'Wonderwall'. FWIW, I like Liam's voice way better. Watch with the subtitles on unless you're metirish.
  17. Sweet, didn't know this was streamable. Gonna Amazon this weekend.

  20. +1 for bmfc1 and JCL's. I wouldn't even know what to expect out of David Wright if he appeared in > 145 games, but what a thing that would be. I'm going to wish that no Met acts like an asshole in 2k17. Fulfillment of that would result in no arrests, no suspensions, no mistreated WAGs/significant others, nobody acting like a jagoff Papelbon. Honorable dudes, no assholes.
  21. A lot of good ones in there. Trout on tornadoes, PJ Conlon (who?) on going through chimneys, Tyler Clippard on FIP... AJ Finch on saves: “I probably shouldn’t say this out loud — this is my inside voice talking — but things that are important to your players have to be important to the manager to some extent… If we played in a nonemotional, non-compensated neutral environment, I think we would flush that stat saves down the toilet. But we don’t.” — A.J. Hinch, Astros manager, December 2016 This is def in the wrong thread, but these quotes on relief pitching reminded me of this book that I think most people on this board would really dig --> https://www.amazon.com/Only-Rule-Has-Work-Experiment/dp/1627795642 Quick summary: Ben and Sam from Baseball Prospectus get to take over an indy league team for one season to try all the zany strategies driven by analytics that MLB teams generally deem too risky to try in the big leagues (wild defensive shifts, changing pitcher roles, etc.). Even at this level, much of the battle is getting their own players to buy into it. Good stuff, yall.
  22. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Maybe it's the Old Fashioneds talking, but... I got an idea: Mets send: Duda, Wheeler, Ynoa/Molina Rockies get: Blackmon, McGee Mets use: Bruce/Conforto/Flores at 1B. The defensive trouble area is moved from easily-exposed CF to 1B. Or... make another trade, only with more leverage. That one makes sense, but I fear we'd have to upgrade the Wheeler part. More importantly - how many dashes of bitters do you dash?
  23. For comparisons sake, the Pirates turned down the Nats offer of Lucas Giolito (their former #1 prospect), Dane Dunning (21-year old pitcher, their 2016 first round pick), and a 'third player', sez some blowhard from FanRag. Justin Dunn would be an easy comp for the Mets for Dane Dunning. Is Matz a Giolito comp? Both have lost a little luster, but I think Giolito's upside is still way upper. Szapucki? Would you still play if these were the names Pittsburgh was throwin around?
  24. The Nats got Murph last year (and way more out of him than anyone expected) and Adam Eaton this year. But how many guys have the Nats whiffed on the last coupla years? All these names I grabbed from the MLBTR site: Yoenis Cespedes (last year) Aroldis Chapman Kenley Jansen Mark Melancon Andrew McCutchen Chris Sale Anyone I'm forgetting? I'm grateful everyone thinks playing in DC for that garbage team is a garbage idea, or that their crappy trade offers came up just short.
