  1. There's a Lopez in the Mets org? I need to follow the minor league threads more closely.
  2. I think the thought is "better as a Met". We could have a whole 'nuther thread called "What the Hell Were the Mets Thinking?" dedicated to players who we wish we hadn't given up on. Yeah, I remember thinking it was a shame there was no spot for Pete on the club because Dom Smith was going to be our 1B of the future. Half the '22 team probably has spots in this thread.
  3. I was thinking about this too... it's a harder thread. I can't really say "hey, Jeff McNeil is better than I thought he'd be" because I never thought about Jeff McNeil at all until out of nowhere we had a .310 hitting middle infielder. But speaking of middle infielders, I never thought Luis Guillorme was ever going to hit enough to stick on a major league roster. Also, I thought Angel Pagan was going to be a scrub, but he turned into a solid player for a couple of seasons.
  4. Mo Vaughn deserves a shout out in this thread. And, of course, as good as Doc and Straw were in the mid-80s, they never became the HOFers and career Mets that we'd hoped they'd become. OE: Travis d'Arnaud!
  5. Hey, welcome m8644. In retrospect, this is going to make me look like a complete doofus, but when I was a kid, my favorite non-Met was Joe Torre. He could hit for a high average back in the Pitcher's Golden Age. He could catch and throw. He was a funny guy. He was from Marine Park, which was basically Sheepshead Bay - my neighborhood - except Italian rather than Jewish. Then, when I was 10, the Mets traded for him. For one day, I was the happiest kid in the world. The Mets were finally gonna get an MVP trophy to put next to all the Cy Youngs (ok, only two, but when I was 10, it was obvious that a Met would always win a Cy Young, and that no Met would ever hit .300). I got my mom to iron a 9 on the back of my Mets t-shirt. And, well, boy howdy, did Joe Torre suck as a Met. I'm looking at BBRef now and apparently he hit .306 in 310 ABs in 1976, but that has been expunged from my memory. As far as I know, he stepped up to the plate no fewer than 3000 times in the mid-seventies and bounced to third on every single at-bat. I think the disappointment still haunts me. Everything I do, every decision I make, every relationship I get into...heck, every IGT I start, a little voice inside my head whispers "get ready for disappointment, Chad, my boy...you remember Joe Torre in 1975, right?" Joe Torre. Joe Freaking Torre.

Because anecdotally I've watched multiple games over the past three seasons where both teams drove in their ghost runner and thus remained tied. The longest game since 2020 went 16 innings in August of 2021: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/padres/story/2021-08-26/padres-dodgers-blake-snell-wil-myers-trent-grisham-will-smith-fernando-tatis-longest-gamehttps://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/padres/story/2021-08-26/padres-dodgers-blake-snell-wil-myers-trent-grisham-will-smith-fernando-tatis-longest-game. Until then, the longest game since the Manfred Man was instituted had been 13 innings, which seems short. 14 inning games weren't all that uncommon prior to the Stupid Extra Inning Runner™. The Mets played 8 games that were 14 innings or longer from 2015 through 2019. So it does look like the rule change succeeded in shortening extra inning games, for what it's worth. My wild idea to improve extra inning games would be to allow an "amnesty" after the 9th, where players who had been pulled from the game are eligible to come off the bench one more time. This way, if a situation calls for a PH or PR, you're more likely to have one available on the bench rather than having to bat your right handed .170 hitting backup catcher against a righty with runners in scoring position. Probably wouldn't work for pitchers, but it could for position players.
  7. Mets have to take advantage here. Dude on the mound looks lost. I think it's the uni number. What kind of a pitcher wears #7?
  8. Francisco Lindor expected to recover from being attacked by a hotel room door to give the Mets some sorely needed RBIs. Chris Bassitt vs Tyler Anderson tonight at 10:10. Let's get these bastages.
  9. Me, I'll probably run it in the background at work the following morning. Curious how the rest of us are handling the next two weeks with the Mets in a different time zone than most of us.
  10. Honestly? On the road, against excellent teams, missing our 1-3 pitchers? 5-8 wouldn't be awful. 7-6 would be cause for celebrating.
  11. I'm concerned about the direction this team is moving in. We won 10-0 last night, but only managed half as many runs today.
  12. This whole thing is similar to what happens when a law is passed that alcohol can't be served without food. Some restaurant gets cute and sells individual potato chips for $10, but they throw in a free beer. Here, we can't just out and out buy Luis Castillo, so the deal would be that we'd effectively write them a check for $46 million for Moustakas, who has about as much value as a potato chip, and give them Dom Smith, and we'd get ourselves Luis Castillo as part of the deal. As a fan, you can't not like this, because all it's costing us is a 1B/DH who we all love but who probably doesn't have a place in this org anymore. There's a lot of money involved, but it's Steve's...doesn't cost us anything. But is half a year of Luis Castillo really worth picking up the remaining $46M of the Moustakas contract plus parting ways with Dom? I'd have to say no.

  14. I think that's the only XBH the Mets have had so far besides the Martebomb.
  15. Forget the stats. My eyeballs tell me Guillorme's OBP for May is 1.000, and that's what I'm going to believe.

  17. Frayed Knot wrote: Damn! The replay review overturned what would have been the GiDP of the year. Fair, though. He looked safe by a step.
  18. Hitting 4 balls to Guillorme is never a good strategy.
  19. I think Pete just swung at ball 7.
  20. This is about the worst inning I've seen the team play all season.
  21. I think it was shortening game time, which is silly. The problem is that it takes too long to play 9 innings, not that there are too many extra innings. More baseball = good.
