  1. This is fucking funny. I mean, I feel for the guy, but my god this thread is funny. (Wow, he tested everything really fast.) Funny Edgy. I thought the same thing. To me, Valdespin has the feel of a guy who is a little fucked in the head, but talented, and will put it all together about two organizations down the road. Kinda like Jeff Kent or Carl Everett.
  2. There seems to be accord amongst all the scouts that Gee doesn't have great stuff, and that leads to tempered expectations, but I don't see it. To me, it seems like he's got nice secondary stuff, good control, and a fastball that touches the low 90's. That's plenty enough to win. He's a young pitcher with a 4.06 career ERA and (for whatever it's worth) a winning record on some bad teams. I'll echo BG's prediction. I think he takes that next step forward this year.*** ***Readers should be aware that I have previously made predictions like "Jae Wong Seo will be a solid #2/3 starter in this league for many years." and "Some team is going to turn Heilman into a starter and make us feel stupid."
  3. Wow, really. I'd sign on for both of those right now. I think Ike will continue to struggle with consistency and hitting lefties. .245 - 35 HR - 95 RBI
  4. I'm still having trouble reconciling the fact that the guy in the Nationals dugout is the same Davey Johnson that managed the 80's Mets. Was it because he was out of baseball for so long?
  5. Very few things in baseball make me as angry as the Bonilla contract. Stupid Phillips.
  6. Fuck Fred. Joe McEwing is our Derek Jeter. McEwing gets credit for owning Randy Johnson. His actual numbers: BA: .250 OBP: .244 SLG: .432 OPS: .676 What can be more Derek Jeter than getting praise for excelling in a particular situation even though the numbers paint a much different picture? Joe McEwing is our Derek Jeter. There is also a mom at my daughter's preschool who injured her foot and got really fat over the winter. She is our Derek Jeter.
  7. I hope he pitches 214 innings and is robbed of the Cy Young because of a prejudice against pitchers on the same team winning back-to-back Cy Young awards when the pitcher that won it the first year was a knuckleballer who is now no longer on the team.
  8. I love the Rickey story. I remember how all the Rickey critics during his prime accused him of being money driven. Rickey insisted it wasn't about the money and instead, about respect. I believe Rickey was one of the few crazy enough to be telling the truth here. I loved hearing those same guys try to justify that argument when he was playing in independent leagues after his MLB career.
  9. The offer from the Mets, if true, really doesn't seem like an Alderson-type move.
  10. Normally, the Yankees and the Mets do not play at home at the same time, on opening day or otherwise. There have been the occasional series when both have played in New York at the same time, including last season. Really? I had no idea the schedule of one had anything to do with the other.
  11. Numbers: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/60684/spring-training-number-guide As expected, no 8, 24 or 31.
  12. Vic Sage wrote: lets get CF in on this; he's a lawyer, too. CF thinks that Bourn sucks and that this move makes no sense. Oh, the rule? Right. Anyone looking at the intent behind it should agree that the Mets pick should be protected. But the rule is pretty clear that it is the first ten picks. I have no idea if the powers that be have the authority to massage it, or whether they have to stick with what is written until the next CBA. And if Bud were really looking to screw the Mets, he would waive the compensation and allow the Mets to sign Bourn to a 4 year, 60 million deal.
  13. I have no idea who Shaun Marcum is. But I'm on board for liking this move because lots of other smart people think so, and I like to publicly agree with smart people when I don't know enough to have an opinion of my own. So for the record, fuck yeah I like this move.
  14. Wow, very cool. I think we can end up with more no-hitters from Santana by having just a SS and 1B in the infield and fielding five outfielders. (Tejada should be able to get to the one popup caught by Murphy)
  15. I remember watching him and really believing that he would throw the Mets first no-hitter. When he was on, it seemed like it was just a matter of time before it happened. I attended one of the one-hitters he threw. Great pitcher, great story. Hope he kicks the Yankee's ass.
  16. That wedding photo is my only memory of Mike Nickeas.
  17. Zvon wrote: I'll never forget the look on his face going out to meet Santana after the no-no. He looked like I would have looked. Beaming with boyish enthusiasm. This is what I will remember about Josh Thole. And the fact that he sucked.
  18. I'm willing to bet that the Christmas party comments have no bearing on this trade. At least I hope not.
  19. They ditched the black trim and black unis last year.
  20. I like the road blues Gilkey is sporting. I think I can do without the orange trim.
  21. The road unis with the gray look pretty cool. I'm just ok with the home jerseys.
  22. Watching my first game of post-season NL baseball tonight. I am suddenly overcome with an irrational rage that Carlos Beltran is no longer a Met. I'm trying to replay the events in my head how two productive Mets (Beltran and Reyes) are wearing different colors. I see why old men mutter to themselves.
  23. To me, unless the Mets someday beat the Yankees in the World Series, no Yankee loss will top Arizona's 2001 rally against Rivera. Never ever. Everyone (including me) was sure it was going to end the same way the prior three years had ended. It came out of nowhere and just STUNNED Yankee fans. The 2004 collapse against the Red Sox was a close second. I love the fact that every time one team takes a 3-0 lead in a best of seven, Yankee fans have to hear about it.
  24. Every year I look forward to the post from Vic (formerly Ralph) telling us why it's good rejoice in the demise of the MFYs.
  25. He also said Jeter got hurt because of bad karma from selling his Trump apartment. The doormen say that there was a giant "2" emblazoned onto the floor. I wonder if he had that removed or if he was limited to selling to another number 2. Maybe Wayne Tolleson was looking for a place to crash?
