  1. Blyleven should have been inducted a long time ago, but better late than never. This is where the steroid issue creates a headache. Maybe Bagwell did something, or maybe he did not. I can understand why people don't want to put him in and then find out later that he took steroids, but there's no real credible evidence against him at this point.

  3. I like the Capuano signing. He's not spectacular, but he's been decent when healthy and had a strong finish in September when put in the Brewers rotation. He's biggest weakness is home runs, which should be less of an issue here than in Milwaukee. Buchholz is likewise low risk, high upside. If he's healthy, he'll be valuable. Both are very good pickups I think.
  4. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I think that Hu is simply here to contend for the role that Alex Cora filled the past couple of years. Right. The Mets do not have a good defensive shortstop among their current list of second base options besides Hu and Tejada, and Alderson has made it clear that he wants Tejada to start the year in AAA. As for Reyes, I got the impression that Alderson would have dealt him for the right price, but nobody has made that kind of offer. Keep in mind, though, that if the Mets aren't contending in July it may be in their best long-term interests to trade him, even if they still wish to sign him next offseason.
  5. He has to play first base at least once, doesn't he? Or at least get to first base. On the field, that is. Oh, never mind. Probably not a consequential deal. Antonini put up good numbers in the low minors, but reality set in at Binghamton. Hu hits singles but doesn't do much else. I suppose one more lottery ticket doesn't hurt, but we may have a bigger organizational need for lefty arms than middle infielders at this point.
  6. Oh well, the next time Chass says something I agree with will be the first. The Mets have had either the second highest payroll in the league, or something close to it, for a while. They maxed out their budget last year. I can accept that. The problem was not any sort of reluctance to spend money, but that the money did not produce a contender. And they're not freeing up anywhere near enough money this year to simply buy their way back into contention. A real Mets fan can accept that, and still cheer for the team that's on the field, hope some young guys surprise us, or hope that the team provides us with a few great memorable moments, whether any come in October or not. If that's so hard for you to handle, there's a team across the Triboro that caters to people with a greater sense of entitlement than loyalty. Go bother them.
  7. He seems well suited to the role of long reliever. I hope he's not needed for more than that.
  8. I'd have considered Hall as a platoon option at 2B who could help out at other positions, but the Astros gave him decent money and a full-time gig. He's a bit like Ty Wigginton, in that he has to choose between being a very useful platoon player/10th man on a good team or starting for a non-contender. Nolasco's peripherals always suggest better results than he's actually shown to this point. I would not be that comfortable paying a premium for upside when he's coming off two seasons with an ERA above 4.50 in an NL pitchers' park.
  9. It cost something like $3500 per person back in 2007, but I can't remember if that included airfare. I also can't tell you if children get a discount.
  10. It was one of those whirlwind two-week bus tours that CIE does. We landed in Heathrow, spent a day in London, headed up to Scotland, then down through the Lake District and the north of Wales, ferried to Dublin, spent a full day there, drove to the Stud Farm in Kildare and then Cashell Rock, did the Ring of Kerry, went to Blarney Castle and Waterford Crystal, ferried back to Wales, saw Castle Cardiff, the city of Bath, Stonehenge, and then back to London. Exhausting, but awesome. We lucked out because the one fully clear day was for the Ring of Kerry, so we got some great shots (including Dingle Bay and a view of the Skelligs from our bus). I wish we could have seen more of Dublin, but it was the halfway point of our trip and we needed to get laundry done. We did get to Kilmainham Gaol at least, along with Dublin Castle.

  12. The Greinke deal includes Alcides Escobar (the Brewers traded JJ Hardy to make room for him just last year), and arguably their top pitching prospect in Jake Odorizzi, in addition to Cain. Really not a bad haul for the Royals.
  13. A few people online have suggested Fernando Martinez needs a change of scenery. He needs a full season, more than anything else. Has anybody gotten a quote from Ricciardi concerning Brad Emaus? Ricciardi drafted him, and presumably brough him to Alderson's attention before the Rule V draft.
  14. Given that he finished really well with the Yankees and the market for set-up guys right now is loony, he must have really wanted to go back to Chicago.
  15. He needs to cut down on the walks, but he's generally been decent when healthy, and he's been very good when asked to come out of the pen. Ideally, he'd be a passable starter for three months and a solid lefty out of the pen when Johan returns. Also, the Cubs are one of the few teams that have actually discussed Luis Castillo with us, and Blake DeWitt is hardly a sure thing at second. If Alderson can swing Castillo, plus enough cash to make the deal payroll-neutral, for Gorzelanny I'd be quite happy.

  17. Blanton pitched much better the second half of the year than he did the first half (after missing April with an injury), and his HR rate would presumably be lower here than it's been in Philly. While I doubt they'd trade him to us, it wouldn't hurt to ask.
  18. If I thought the Mets were one good pickup from catching up with the Phillies before yesterday, I'd feel much worse about it. As for 2012 and beyond, I'll worry about it when I get there.
  19. The deal guarantees $120M at last report, with the sixth year being a $27.5M vesting option or a staggering $12.5M buyout. Does this get Amaro off the hook for the horrible mistake in dealing Lee in the first place? After everything else he's since done, how can he possibly argue that $9M was too much to pay for the guy last year? That being said, he's managed to talk the Blue Jays into eating a significant portion of Halladay's salary last year, Halladay into taking three years at $20M per when he'd have gotten bigger offers than Lee had he waited, the Astros into eating large portions of Oswalt's contract, and Lee into passing up not one but two larger offers from playoff teams. Jedi mind tricks? Blackmail? How come Ryan Howard's agent appears to be smarter than everybody else?
  20. I'd have thought that after how last season went, the Mariners would de-emphasize defense a little and go for some bats. So what's the first thing they do? Trade for a plus defensive shortstop who had a .573 OPS last season, and pencil him in at second base.
  21. Johnson is really coming off a bad season. He did have some back problems, but he's at an age where you can't be too optimistic about him bouncing back. For a minor-league deal he's still worth a look, but I wouldn't go above that.
  22. Fangraphs has Reyes' performance over the past two season as being worth $15M total. Yeah, he lost time to injury, but he's done so in the past as well, and do you really want to bank that much on injury history not repeating?
  23. attgig wrote: We traded away some guy named Kazmir for stud Victor Zambrano, but all we got was game 7 of the nlcs... i think we kinda got jipped. Not that I ever even slightly agreed with that deal, but for what it's worth, we gave up less and got more than the Giants and Rangers did in those other two trades.
  24. Frayed Knot wrote: Was a fairly highly regarded prospect at one point. Also was part of one of the worst trades in recent MLB history: Bosner along with Joe Nathan and Francisco Liriano to the Twins in exchange for AJ Pierzynski. And the guy who made that deal - Brian Sabean in SF - is busy polishing his WS trophy right now. The only trade of the 00s that compared was the Rangers trading Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez to San Diego for Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka. And the Rangers also made the WS this year. Go figure. Bonser showed some promise at one point, so I see no harm here.
  25. The PCL is considered a hitters' league, but Emaus posted a .298/.395/.495 line at Vegas with an even 50/50 BB/K ratio in 309 ABs. And he'll turn 25 in March. I have no idea what his glove at 2B is like (did he play so much at third last year simply because Aaron Hill was blocking him?), but I'd give him an excellent shot at sticking around. Beato just turned 24 and had a nice year in AA switching to the pen for the first time, but he has no experience above AA. He's more of a lottery ticket, but his resum is not all that different from O'Day's two years ago.
