  1. I just took a look at the NL and AL ROY lists, and it's impressive how many people I don't remember at all, especially from the AL side. Bob Hamelin? Marty Cordova?
  2. Eric Hinske. Joba Chamberlain. The interesting thing about this list so far is that Lynn is the only one of the players mentioned whose career wasn't defined entirely by his rookie season.
  3. One bad inning and the league has caught up to him? Do we really need that shit from Mets commentators?

Has Harris gotten any time at 2B yet? He's probably a better fielder there than a few of the guys we're trying. Igarashi's still in the bullpen mix, and (technically at least) Ollie is as well. My money is on Acosta, Byrdak, and Isringhausen making the last three spots. I do think Beato has upside, but he has more walks than strikeouts and that's concerning. Acosta had a 2.95 ERA last year and has certainly done nothing to lose a spot. Byrdak appeared to be the front-runner for the LOOGY role going in, and he's also done nothing to lose his spot. In a perfect world, we can find sufficient compensation for the Orioles that will enable us to keep Beato, and we won't lose Misch to waivers. You can't have too much depth.

Valdespin was the only 2B option showing signs of life with the bat, so I'm a little surprised by that. I'm glad he and Gronauer got to out with a bang. The verdict is very much still out on Tejada. He came up very young and with no AAA experience last year, so judging him on that is unfair. It's not like Hu has fared any better at this level, and he's 27 while Tejada's 21. I guess it was always their plan to send Martinez to minor-league camp at this point, but we may see him again sooner rather than later if Beltran can't stay healthy. And that might actually be a good thing.
  6. It's still to early to tell. Emaus has been getting fewer ABs than the others, which might mean they want to look at the other guys first and rule one or two out before giving him a closer look, or it might not. Castillo's game yesterday was the first big game that any of them have really had, but I figure that as the "known" commodity his spring performance will count the least. Not that I think he doesn't have a chance, but I think the others will be judged on whether they can do better than what we can reasonably expect from Castillo based on past experience. (And if we could reasonably expect much, we wouldn't be having this discussion.)
  7. There are two valid reasons to wait. 1. Jose is hoping he can get a Crawford-sized contract after a full year at peak performance, yet his last two seasons make it hard to presently justify anything close to that. 2. If the Mets are out of contention in July and Jose could get the Mets more than twice the value of the draft picks he'd bring back as free agent compensation, he'd be worth dealing even if the Mets re-sign him in the offseason.
  8. There's a chance we may have more capable relievers than available spots, believe it or not.
  9. A 3.60 ERA in 150 IP.
  10. Beltran, simply because I don't think the remaining starts will go to one player in particular.
  11. I'm figuring a year like last year.
  12. Difficult to say. He may be the best fielder of the 2B candidates, and if he's a decent enough SS he'd obviate the need to bring a weaker bat up north. My guess is he makes the team as a reserve, and pulls a .280/.340/.390 line in 200 ABs.
  13. .280/.360/.400, in 400 AB.
  14. Thanks again for running it.

  16. My memories of Frazier are very vague, outside of him being the manager when I first started watching baseball. Obviously the circumstances surrounding the team became ridiculous in 1977 -- far, far worse than anything happening now, in case people need to be reminded -- and Frazier was an innocent victim of it.
  17. John Maine gets a minor-league contract and a camp invite from the Rockies. Best of luck to him.
  18. It was only a four-game sample, but he did pitch better in Buffalo. So is he one of the guys Alderson put on the 40 to protect him from Rule V? I wouldn't expect much this year, although he may have respectable future in the pen down the road.
  19. Our starting rotation is so rock solid in July that he comes in as a reliever, and after a few outings to get warm takes over as the Mets closer. His effectiveness, plus the money he saves the Mets by not having to pay Frankie $17M next year, makes him worth his salary.
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: While the idea that the union puts pressure on players, particularly high profile ones, to push the envelope on new contracts so as to up the base-line for whoever is next is hardly a new one, the fact that a high-profile manager would go public with such a charge (however self-serving it might be) is more than a bit out of the ordinary. This comes up every time a team's fans (or manager, I guess) get mad when a player they felt they were entitled to keep ponders the open market. As if the thought of demanding a record-breaking contract never would have occurred to Pujols and his agent by themselves. It's far too simple and obvious to conclude that Pujols might be in the percentage of the population who, when given multiple offers to do the same job, would willingly take the most lucrative offer.
  21. If it were Minaya, he'd be competing for that all-important "bridge to Franciso Rodriguez" role, presumably causing Parnell to be demoted again in the process. But since Alderson is here, I expect him to start at St. Lucie, and possibly finish at Binghamton if things go well.
  22. Another OK year like last year.
  23. Wednesday nights are bad for me, but I'll manage if necessary.
  24. I was all set to click "like" on that last post. Then I remembered this wasn't Facebook.
  25. Expectations? None whatsoever.
