  1. A solid year in AAA. We'll probably see him in September, although I suppose he could be a trade candidate if the Mets are contending in July.
  2. I'm going to guess we see very little of him, if anything.

Something like this. He'll probably get some starts in rightfield against lefthanded pitching, and will see more action if Beltran and/or Bay gets moved later.

I guess Bay can't play center field but still. Would you take Bay? No, but who would have thought before Friday that anybody would have taken Wells and that contract?
  5. Wouldn't Murphy be out of options if Evans is, or does missing a year change that? Pridie and Stoner were put on waivers after Young and Hairston were signed. Parnell, F-Mart, and Turner have one more year of options, Duda, Mejia and Tejada have two. I had totally forgotten we still had Acosta. That means our pen is in a little better shape than I had thought. He's definitely out of options, but I don't think we have seven better guys.

    Tim Byrdak

As long as one of either Byrdak or Tankersley shows positive signs in spring that carry over to the season, the Mets will be happy. I still wouldn't mind adding one or two more legit relievers, though.
  8. A waiver claim waiting to happen.
  9. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I have this nagging feeling that the Phillies will sweep in and sign Reyes, and the Mets, facing a void at the position will sign Rollins. I don't want that to happen! The Mets will have far more money to spend than Philadelphia, so unless Rollins ends the season the more valuable commodity of the two, the likelihood of them switching teams is close to zero and at any rate would be initiated by the Mets. It's possible that somebody will offer more money for Reyes than Alderson thinks he is worth, but Philadelphia does not seem likely to be one of them.
  10. Reyes can regain his full value, or he can lose more of it in another injury-plagued season. The Mets will be in a financially advantageous position next offseason, which means they'll be able to outbid other suitors if they decide that they want to, or move on if they decide that they want to. Reyes and his agent know that a full healthy season will boost his value significantly, and the Mets know that committing right now to 3+ years at an annual salary close to or greater than the $15M Reyes has been worth total over the past two years is foolhardy. So this will take a while.
  11. I'll go with 8 starts at this level, with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.
  12. Gil Meche announces his retirement due to lingering shoulder issues, walking away from $12M in the process. I like Hairston as a pickup. He'd be one injury or trade away from getting a call-up, and if last year was an aberration he'll have some value. After playing most of his home games at Petco, he won't be intimidated by Citi.
  13. Difficult to gauge the plate appearances, as that will likely depend more on other players than him. I figure a .260/.330/.450 line, with fairly sharp platoon splits.
  14. The Cubs got three prospects for Gorzelanny, none rated higher than C+ by Sickels. A fair haul for a guy who isn't great but will likely outperform his salary. Alderson appears to have chosen signing the guy with upside over dealing for safe mediocrity. And why not?
  15. The Mets are in a position where they are likely to have more available spending money going into next offseason than any other team, and Pujols happens to be the best player in the sport. Of course you have to look into the possibility of acquiring him. But a lot can happen in a year. Ike Davis might give us plenty of reasons to spend our resources at other positions instead, or he might regress. We might have too many holes in our pitching staff that need filling, or a bunch of people might surprise us. Pujols might have a down year, or he might win the triple crown. Let's see how this plays out.
  16. He'll stick unless the Mets find three better mid-infield options between now and the end of the season. I'll go with a .260/.360/.430 line over 500 ABs, with 8 HRs and 65 RBI.
  17. I think Duda will surprise people if he gets the opportunity. I'm just not sure he'll get the opportunity.
  18. I've always liked him. I hope last year was aberration. Before that, he was good for an OPS at or just below .750, which for a left-handed hitter capable of playing the infield at least decently and the outfield as well as anybody made him quite a useful reserve. The wheels came off a bit last year, though, and at his age there's no guarantee he gets his ship righted.
  19. Was another offer for Soriano anywhere close? Of course, the Yankees have loads of cash and didn't have anybody else to spend it on. And naturally, anything higher than the 1.73 ERA that Soriano gave the Rays last year will be proof that he can't hack it in New York. Sure it's a big paper improvement for the only team who could shrug off $25M+ per year to two relievers, but since one is over 40 and the other is injury prone, there's potential entertainment value for the rest of us as well.
  20. The error bars are huge, but I'm going to go with 15-11, 3.50. Teams will adjust to him a bit, but he'll still be legit.
  21. I think a .280/.380/.480 line is well within his reach.
  22. The Garza deal boots Tom Gorzelanny out of a role for the Cubs, so don't be surprised if he becomes the subject of more Met-related rumors.
  23. Anybody born on August 19 must be cool. 15-9, 3.72 ERA, 193 IP.
  24. I'm totally OK with handling things less publicly. The leaks on Minaya's watch just got silly after a while.
  25. Chris Carter got a minor league deal with the Rays. I hope he does OK there.
