  1. Oliver Perez and Darren Oliver may be the only teammates with the name (first or last) Oliver in the history of the major leagues. I tried baseballreference.com but didn't notice any others. But in my research, I noticed that Darren Oliver is the son of ex-major leaguer Bob Oliver.(who I thought might have been a Pirate teammate of Al Oliver, but wasn't) Later
  2. Bannister, Brian 8 (definite maybe A/O 8/31) Delgado, Carlos 10 Floyd, Cliff 0 (I dunno, is there a 365 day DL?) Glavine, Tom 8 (The Mets look better to him in his quest for 300 wins than Atlanta does. And Atlanta seems to be the only other option he would consider) Heilman, Aaron 8 (somebody up there likes him, but not in the way he would prefer.) Hernandez, Orlando 4 (Let's see how much of his playoff magic he still retains) Maine, John 10 Milledge, Lastings 10 (you said in the organization, so I guess that means the player could be in the minors) Trachsel, Steve 5 (you could take a tough PR hit for not renewing a Cy Young winner.) Valentin, Jose 4 (He could be the next Marlon Anderson - played so well that he was attractive to other teams. So the Mets might not be able to retain him for less money than he could get elsewhere.) 4. That makes two Mets now with over 100 RBI. Calling Mr. Delgado. Calling Mr. Delgado. Later

  6. ="OlerudOwned"]The Mets seem to have a glut of all defense-no bat catchers. Maybe we should consider having a Choo Choo Coleman Memorial Roster Spot. (For "good low ball catcher(s)", as Stengel called him) Later

  8. Edgy DC wrote: Omar Minaya was at yesterday's astounding Binghamton Mets victory over the Portland SeaDogs. I know they had lost the previous night 10-0 and won last night 10-3, but why was it astounding? And, do you know if he went there to scout any particular player? Later
  9. No word as to whether he will be called up in time to make the post season roster, but there was a comment in this morning's Daily News that Anderson Hernandez will be recalled, and that Willie doesn't like many callups on the bench. Later
  10. Then, as a tribute to the history of New York Baseball, I'd want Casey Stengel Field. And, it would be a kick in the arse to that "team of tradition" that plays in the Bronx. George would have a fit. Later
  11. ="ScarletKnight41"]The Jewish Star (I've been calling him that for years - I'm not going to stop now) That sounds like something that would have been found in the "announced" (in Part I), but never made, movie History of the World Part II - Jews in Space. Later

  13. There was a lot of discussion on the Mike and the Mad Dog show yesterday about which NY baseball fans became Mets fans. Russo (flying solo yesterday) said they were folks who had originally rooted for the NY Giants, and added that Brooklyn fans became Yankee fans. He could not have been more wrong. The Giants had, at one point, been a successful, winning franchise. Those fans (who wanted to root for a National League team) either followed the fortunes of their old team on the West Coast (for a while, SF games were broadcast bask to NY) or gravitated to another NL team (there were rumors at the time that the Reds would be moving to New York). Besides, Yankee Stadium is only one additional subway stop away from the Polo Grounds where the Giants had played. It was geographically reasonable that Manhattanites (and other Giant fans) would look toward the Bronx to fill their baseball needs. On the other hand, the Brooklyn team had a long history of being loveable losers. It was very natural that they took to the early Mets in droves. And Brooklyn is closer to Queens (the home of the Mets) than is the Bronx. What has this got to do with the naming of the new stadium? Plenty. Owner Fred Wilpon had been a Brooklyn Dodger fan. So much so that the new Mets ballpark has been designed to have the "look and feel" of Ebbitts Field. He doesn't need the extra royalty money. Jackie, being the person who broke the color line, was to many the very reason many New Yorkers became fans of the National League in general, and specifically fans of the Brooklyn Dodgers. (I remember reading a demographic study conducted at the time) And it is for that reason that I believe he will name it after Jackie Robinson, without any associated Corporate name. Later

  15. Blatt, you had me going for a while. Then I remembered that Roger Clemens is now pitching in the Lone Star (how appropriate) State and that his official (to me) nickname is "Fat Coward, bat tossing mother-fukker". I still voted no. Later

  19. Tick tock The clock keeps moving a no word yet on the PTBNL. I've sent an email to an Indian-fan friend in Cleveland. I'll let you know when I hear back from him. Later

  21. Federline is the father of Britney Spears' baby. Without that he has no discernible power to get through any closed doors, as per Patchy's comment. Later
  22. ]I think the other Kevin Brown and the other Pedro Martinez (Pedro A. who also pitched with the Pads) are probably the two most confused "Ones that got away" in Mets history! But for a while, that title was held by the Ender/ Endy Chavez confusion. Or when "E.Alfonzo, c" started showing up in recent SF box scores after they released Edgardo. Thank goodness real Mets fans know that Edgardo was never a catcher. was he? Later
