  1. Lundy, is it posted on a personal web site? The security software on the computer I'm using doesn't permit me to view it. Can you please re-post (copy and paste) it as a new thread here on the CPF site without using a link? Thanks, Later
  2. O/O's fill-in post was pretty good. Later
  3. Abreu is 31 years old, according to the Binghamton roster. I believe this is his first year of US baseball. (Was he a Cuban refugee?) He has been hitting well at AA, with some power. Maybe the Mets are preparing him to take over the Julio Franco, old-guy, backup first baseman, righty pinch hitter, roster spot when Franco's contract expires after next year. Joe Smith is on the fast track too,eh? Later
  4. Funny stuff. If you folks are going to continue this way, please let me know so I can take my sarcasm tolerance pills. Later
  5. Edgy DC wrote: "He'd be ugly even if he was White". I never quite get this. I think I do. From what I remember, Gibson had the reputation as an "Angry Black Man" during the times when much of the country was still coping with integration. He was very sensitive to racial stereotypes. I think this comment was his attempt at a canard (is that a correct usage?), saying that White folks could be as ugly as Black folks were "supposed to be". I could be way off on that, but its the way I interpreted it. Later
  6. Met luck - the medication they will now put him on probably contains steroids. Later
  7. ="Frayed Knot"]Initially it looked like it might be just a nepotism promotion, but LFer Chris (son of long-time LaRussa pitching coach Dave) Duncan has been bopping the ball to the tune of .345/.401/.661 with 14 HRs and 23 XBHs in just 168 ABs in this, his first go-'round in the major leagues. Holy Mike Jacobs Batman! I knew he hit homers in each of the games in the recent Cubs series, but I didn't realize he was hitting that well against real pitching staffs, too. Later
  8. I think we had a thread on all-time baseball uglies on the old site. Willie may have been funny looking, but my vote still goes to ex-Met Danny Napoleon. Someone (Bob Gibson?) once said of him "He'd be ugly even if he was White". Later
  9. Yeah, but how good is Prince Albert at eating hot dogs and drinking beer? Later
  10. When you look at the career statistics for reserve outfielder So Taguchi, you might start to think that the level of play in the Japanese league is comparable to that in the NL. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/T/So-Taguchi.shtml Later

  12. ]Glavine's left middle finger and index finger were diagnosed in 1990 with Raynaud's, a condition caused by poor circulation that leads to numbness and coldness. I'm shocked that he wasn't put on a medication program when that was first diagnosed. Later
  13. Steve, why not change the title of this thread to include stupid comments from in-game broadcasts as well as sports talk? I've heard plenty of them over the past few days and there's really no thread in which to post them. For example: During yesterday's Yankee game, John Sterling gushed "Bobby Abreau was born (his emphasis)to be a Yankee. Later
  14. ="Yancy Street Gang"]If a conflict between the interests of your fantasy team and those of your real team produces a "quandry" then it's time to get out of the fantasy business. No quandry. I resolved it in my next sentence: ]I'll gladly take the hit if Rod came to the Mets. Later
  15. Wow, talk about mixed emotions. Barajas is the only catcher on my one and only fantasy team. He hit over 20HR last year and is a decent defensive catcher. IIRC, he is a free agent at the end of the year, so Texas is giving most of the playing time to Laird. He would be a great pickup for the Mets. But his playing time would decrease even more if he came to the Mets. A quandry for me. But since I'm not even close to the top in my fantasy league, I'll gladly take the hit if Rod came to the Mets. As for Zaun, I've watched him over the years against the Yanks, and can recall him getting only one hit in games played in New York. The book says he's a switch hitter, and catchers who can hit from the left side are pretty rare. But to me, he's a switch-misser. Pass
  16. ]Brian Daubach Brian has 11 homers for the Memphis Redbirds, but Preston Wilson took the spot in the Cardinals nest that he had his eye on. Update - Brain was released a few weeks ago. Also signed by Memphis, and released, was old friend Jorge Toca. EDIT: Mike Kinkade (listed as a Marlin) has been named to the US team that will be articipating in the Olympic qualifying tourney. Later
  17. ="Farmer Ted"] Who knew Glen Close could sing? I did. I saw her on Broadway in Sunset Boulevard. She has a good voice. Later
  18. SteveJRogers wrote: Not to mention 14 teams that will claim them on their way up to us Today's Daily News reports that Green has already passed through waivers, so 'Zona can make any deal they can get for him. ] "you are entering the Jerome-Zone..." 83, that has jumped out in front for line of the day. But this is all silliness. A good deal helps both teams. Given what we saw during the recently completed 5 game series in Boston, everyone knows the Sox need bullpen help - quickly. The Mets now have an abundance of relievers and they need a right handed hitting outfielder with power. Therefore, it is obvious that the most logical deal we can put forth is: Mota, Heath Bell and Royce Ring for Manny Ramirez. How come nobody mentioned that one,eh? (SC= pegged the needle) Later
  19. No, its not the name of a movie. But JD's thread about L'Enfant reminded me. Why are the subtitles at the bottom of the screen and not at the top (other than you'd have to call them something like supratitles)? If you're sitting in one of the pre-stadium seating movie houses, they can be obscured by the head of the person sitting in front of you. Why not put them at the top of the screen and make them more visible? Can any of the film mavens here shed some light on this? Thanks in advance. Later
  20. Fun stuff Edgy. Thanks You were right on about Ed Koch. He was our Mayor. Years later, Rudi Guilliani was theirs. Later
  21. Lilly has been in the majors for a while, and I remember he had the same problem (not holding a lead and burning the bullpen) when he first came up. I'm sure pitching coaches have tried everything to correct whatever is the problem. Maybe a good ol' butt kicking will work. Later

  23. Tag. Someone else take it for a while. Yahoo is all screwed up. The Yanks had runners on first and second with nobody out. A-Rod grounded into a DP, then Cano (batting fifth against a lefty) grounded out to end the inning. Then the site refreshed and it showed tow on with A-Rod coming up again. Maybe they want to give him another chance. Later
  24. In case anyone's interested in Monday's game, its 0-0 after 2 1/2. Later
