Because there will be no host, so no opening host monologue this year, the show will open (according to some sources but not confirmed) with a musical number in which Queen, with Adam Lambert singing lead, will perform. I'll probably turn it off after that. Later
  2. Vic Sage wrote: For example, many point to PSYCHO as the first (or at least most influential) slasher/horror film. I disagree. Until that point, Hitchcock was the "master of suspense," not horror, and he reached his apotheosis with PSYCHO. But for Hitch's horror film, you have to look to THE BIRDS, which offers a terrifying vision of a small town enduring a protracted and organized attack by birds for no reason, implying some unnatural situation in which birds can think and coordinate and seek vengeance for a crime only they are aware of. If all it takes to be a horror film is an attempt to induce fear or dread, then just about every film Hitch ever made was a horror film, and he should be rechristened "the master of horror" rather than suspense. Well done. Later
  3. It was entertaining, and the concert scenes were excellent. I didn't miss what others have said was missing, nor note all the cliches, because I don't remember seeing any other rock bio-pics. Later
  4. =LWFS post_id=581 time=1546641862 user_id=84] =metsmarathon post_id=563 time=1546631749 user_id=83] up was the movie where you realize that pixar has learned to weaponize all the feels.
  5. Emily Blunt won SAG best supporting actress award for her performance in A Quiet Place and wasn't even nominated by the Academy. While blockbuster superhero films are getting recognized, "horror" movies are still waiting for a chance. Later

  7. Cute. Later
  8. Lady Gaga didn't win the best actress Golden Globe. I guess the voters thought her performance was too sha-sha-shallow. Later
  9. Sundance Channel is showing it all day today. Later
  10. My wife and I had seen no other "rock biopics" (for comparison), so we just saw when we saw, and both enjoyed it. No poll here, but I would give it a 4 or 4 1/2 out of 5. Later
  11. The movie was written when America liked the title song, that had been performed in the movie 'Holiday Inn". It would have been like producing a movie titled "Maria" after the song in West Side Story. It was like dozens of Judy Garland/ Mickey Rooney/ Donald O'Connor musicals of its era, but with snow. Not bad for a "spin-off". Later
  12. Vic Sage wrote: Blackhawks were military heroes, but not SUPERheroes. I know, but still... And at the end, they were battling some weird / extra-terrestrial and robotic stuff, so it was close. That's when I stopped reading it. Later
  13. Great article. Cebulski said Marvel must wait for the "right time" to see an Asian Superhero lead in a Marvel film. Yup. The first Asian comic book hero I remember was Chop-Chop, a member of the Blackhawks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackhawk_%28DC_Comics%29 He started out as a stereotypical "cook and mascot" but became a valued member of the team, fighting tyranny and injustice. I collected those comic books as a kid, and later found the last issue (IIRC # 270-something) which I still have somewhere in the house. The article states that Steven Spielberg is considering a film based on the characters, so you may get that Asian hero (channeling the announcer in the trailer) "coming to a theater near YOU." Later
  14. But Blade III gave us Ryan Reynolds in unmasked snarkiness. That should be worth something. Later
  15. Frayed Knot wrote: I never saw any of the THREE! previous versions of this story: which might just be a good thing in the long run as I've heard good things about this one and I just might get around to it. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Later
  16. In this remake, Bradley Cooper (who also directed the film) plays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers—and falls in love with—struggling artist Ally (Lady Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer… until Jack discovers her singing in a drag bar, is amazed by her talent, falls in love with her and brings her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons (drugs, alcohol and family). Later

Marlins Park - Miami Rankings are based on the stadium itself, the city, the surrounding area, the team and fans. Many reports I've read come close to comparing the Oakland Alameda County Stadium to Dante's Seventh Circle of Hell (or was it the other way around?). Marlins Park is lower than THAT? Wow! Later
  18. Benjamin Grimm wrote: It's a totally different character. I think you're thinking of Shazam, which is also an upcoming movie m Then THAT'S the movie I want to see. Thanks. Later
  19. I hope to be able to enjoy Captain Marvel when it comes out without having seen a single one of those movies. I liked it better than Superman when I was a kid. (Or will this not follow the original story line to introduce the character?) Later
  20. oe: and I also wondered how Tom Cruise was injured worse, during the stunt itself or in falling over himself to let the news accidentally leak out that he was injured doing his own stunts. Oh, snap! Later
  21. Frayed Knot wrote: Was a big fan of the TV show way back when. Didn't particularly like the first movie and haven't revisited since. I've only seen number 2, which people said wasn't good. But I had seen the trailer for this and had also read how Tom Cruise had injured himself doing one of the stunts. I hadn't known he does most of them himself. So I was curious. It turns out I was pleasantly surprised. This was one of the best action-adventure movies I have seen in a long time. From one danger to another, it reminded me of the old serial films and later, the Indiana Jones movies, in which Spielberg tried to recapture the serial film "feel". And, yes, the scene where he got hurt was pretty obvious. Edgy's right. Plot? Meh. And at times I had a tough time separating the good guys from the bad guys because some of the actors looked alike at quick glance. But who cares? Its a fun ride. Later
  22. The Mission Impossible team is again led by Tom Cruise, in the 6th installment of this franchise. They try to find stolen plutonium, enough to make three nuclear weapons, while battling the CIA, MI-6, and an international conspiracy. Later
  23. There's been a lot of excitement about the Kingsport ® team this year. First round draft picks Jarred Kelenic (CF) and Mark Vientos (3B) play there. But everyone seems to be overlooking a 19 year old kid named Luis Santana, who is playing second and hitting cleanup. Signed out of the Dominican Republic, this is his first year playing in the US. He's short, stocky and can hit. http://www.milb.com/player/index.jsp?sid=milb&player_id=670919#/career/R/hitting/2018/ALL I'm channeling my love for Brian Cole (RIP) in this kid. Welcome to him home, Luis. Mi casa es su casa. Later
  24. Yesterday, I took my grandson to his first pro baseball game at Dunkin Donuts Stadium, the home of the Hartford Yard Goats of the AA Eastern League. A yard goat is when they call the engine that moves trains around in a depot. Attendance yesterday was 6,850 which was their 21st full house of the season. Parking was $5 and seats seven rows from the field next to the 3rd base dugout were $16. And I saw why it was voted best minor league stadium for the second year in a row. Good sight lines, lots of concessions (no vendors in the stands), lots of very clean rest rooms, great big screen scoreboard. On the line score on the scoreboard, it had R H E and MVR. I case you don't know, it stands for Mound Visits Remaining. Never saw that before. I had one quibble - the ball got by the catcher, which put a player in position to score (he later did). We were never told whether it was a wild pitch or passed ball. (A Later check of the box score says it was a wild pitch) They use a 20 second pitch clock. But when the pitcher gets into the set position, the clock was turned off. I didn't notice any abuses of this (pitchers coming to a set, then holding the ball for a long time waiting for a sign or looking back a runner). Bottom line, it worked. What made the game last a long time were the endless silly promotions every half inning Mascot races, product races, etc. I guess they think they need to entertain the kids, but the players and fans were getting itchy by the fifth inning. But it worked, my grandson had so much fun that he is asking when we can go back. I can't wait to take him. Later
  25. Won his first game last night (he's 1-4) for St. Lucie. He pitched 6 innings, giving up one hit and striking out six. Hopefully, his arm is fully recovered from his surgery. Later
