  1. A right handed hitting first baseman with power? For the Mets? We hope the broken finger that ended his minor league season heals completely and he has a fast rise through the system. Later
  2. I thought this was about a new animated movie about animals engaging in a singing contest. I saw the coming attraction when I went to see another movie earlier this year. Its called Sing, and it looked like fun for the grandkids when it comes out. I couldn't cut and paste the link to the trailer. Check it out for yourselves. I don't think I'll see this one. Later
  3. My wife gave me a Snowball Beanie Baby today. It is my favorite character from the movie. Later
  4. My kid will be on the disabled list for the rest of the year. He had surgery to remove a cyst from his shoulder. One of the minor league analysts (in Amazing Avenue?) speculated that the pain in the shoulder is why he didn't hit with the expected power this year. Heal fully kid. We can wait for your break-out year in 2017. His numbers this year were .316/.345/.398. Later
  5. Saw it yesterday. I'd give it a 4 stars out of five. (Easily talked into a 4 1/2) Whoever wrote it not only loves animals, but also loves New York City. Both adults and children will find it funny. Well done. Later

    BFG

It stands for Big Friendly Giant. Its a mixed live actor and animation film based on a story by Roald Dahl and directed by Stephen Spielberg. Its about a young girl taken from an orphanage in England by the BFG, to his land where nine evil giants live. Wifey and I took our five year old grandson (or was it the other way around?) to see it yesterday. When we left the theater, my grandson said "That was pretty good" and we agreed. It was a little too long, and he got a bit antsy in the middle of the film, but then regained interest in the movie to the end. This morning a thought hit me. The BFG looked a bit like Lindsay Nelson and used some words like Ralph Kiner might have. (RIP) Later
  7. The guy's a pitcher. He could have mentioned (I hate myself for this) Whitey Ford, the "Lake Success success". Later
  8. Do you get to see what's in a Turkish prison? I've been wanting to know since "Airplane". Later
  9. Saw the coming attraction a few weeks ago. When I had to register a car last week (see the Apropos of Nothing 2016 thread) I remembered the DMV scene clip from the preview and laughed again. Haven't seen the full movie yet, but it looks like a delight. I'll score it then. Later
  10. If you grew up on the streets of an East Coast city, you really didn't care about beach boys, hot cars or surfing. Our music tastes were folksier, grittier and/ or more soulful. So to us, the Beach Boys were like science fiction - you'd read about that stuff, but would never experience it. So I paid no mind to their music and had no interest in their (pre-social media ) personal lives. Later in life, I began to listen to their music and really appreciate their harmonies and rhythms. But still not enough for me to want to see a movie about their personal lives or struggles. It might be fun for others, but I'll pass. Later
  11. Chris Rock was great. He dealt with the outcry about no people of color being nominated for major awards in a funny manner. But by the middle of the show, it looked like they had sent busses into West LA to find people of color to present awards. OK. we got it. There were no Black nominees for the major awards. But the Academy tried to over compensate for that like the guy with the small dick who buys the big truck with the gun rack. Academy, we got it. Other than that, the best moment of the show was Luis CK's introduction of the Best Short Documentary Award. We got it. Later
  12. The four women commenting on the red carpet fashions are about as appropriate and competent as Angel Hernandez running an umpiring school. Later
  13. Frayed Knot wrote: On-screen suffering is maybe second only to playing handicapped as sure-fire Oscar bait. And when the Academy has an "oops" moment, they try to make up for it quickly. Jane Fonda suffered enough to deserve one for They Shoot Horses, Don't They? She didn't win, but got one the next year for her ordinary performance in Klute. But I'm still waiting for the Academy to make it up to Edward Norton after not giving him the Best Supporting Actor award for Primal Fear. Later
  14. Lefty Specialist wrote: Always wondered how you could have a massive battle in a major city on something larger than an aircraft carrier without a single cop or ambulance showing up, but hey, it's the movies. No. Its probably just Detroit. They burn cars to celebrate sports victories there. A battle involving superheroes is no biggie to them. Haven't seen the movie yet. Later
  15. I felt a few of the scenes in the snow were redundant. We get it, it was cold. But that doesn't take much away from the fact that it was a very good film. I gave it 4 1/2 stars. The subtitles during the Native American dialogue were clear in English. And by that I also mean readable. Sometimes, they are done poorly - there is no contrast between the words and the background scenery. But these were done well. Leonardo deserves his Oscar. Later

    The Boy

Yup. The coming attraction freaked me out. No way I'm watching the show. Later
  17. It was like being reunited with an old friend. Things pick up just about where they left off the last time we saw each other. We try to fill in what happened when we were apart and go on from there. Highly enjoyable. Later
  18. Michael Hiltzik (The person who wrote that, for those of you who didn't click on the link) writes like someone who can see the negative side of anything. He must have had a miserable childhood, never letting his imagination run free or allowing any fun into his life. Maybe he's setting us up for an upcoming book about what's wrong with Hollywood. Later
  19. Currently doing well in Winter Ball. Check out the announcer's call of the homer. http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2015/12/mets_prospect_wuilmer_becerra_raking_in_winter_bal.html Later
  20. He just signed a minor league contract with the MFYs. http://www.amazinavenue.com/2015/12/23/10661438/mets-cesar-puello-yankees-new-york Shows what happens when kids leave the nest.. Later
  21. The latest James Bond film. There are the obligatory women, chases, winter scene and explosions. But this is a darker Bond, and the cinematography reflects it. At first glance, the story might seem to be there only to hold those things together. But long time Bond fans finally learn something about how James Bond became .007 and his longtime relationship with one of his arch enemies. That revelation may not be enough to make this one of the best Bond films ever, but it adds something unexpected to this formula-based series. Later
  22. Loved it - story, cinematography, acting, even the disco music - everything. Don't do 3-D , but there were some scenes that might have been enhanced by it. But that wasn't necessary for the enjoyment of the movie. Later
  23. He started for Brooklyn tonight, pitching six innings and allowing one run. Later
  24. Finished the regular season a tinge below .300 in a pitchers' league and awful hitters' ballpark. Will probably be listed among the top prospects in the league and is climbing up on the list of Mets' prospects. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=becerr000wui Maybe some say it WILL be called “The Wuilmer Becerra Trade.” Later
  25. Three stops this year. Looks like my kid is starting to put it together. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=villas001edi Later
