    John Olerud went back to Washington because his wife was pregnant with a child that would require special care and his father was a department head at the U of Washington Medical Center, where the baby and mother could receive that care. No amount of money or different teammates could have kept him here. Even though that care could have been provided by one of the great hospitals here, he trusted family more. Later

IIRC the justification was that whoever they signed was going to be a stopgap because of the great CF prospects they had (e,g.- Gilbert and maybe Acuna or Williams). None of them seem ready to take over CF yet. And now the Mets have to pay the remaining part of Mullins' $8 million contract. Ugh! Later

    Since you were talking about Leo, I think one of the "old time" managers would have given Alvarez the take sign on the first pitch, just to calm him down and force him to focus. Giving the take sign used to be common practice, but I'm not sure if it is done any more. Later

    Also, what does it do to your actual Ace? In Sproat's next-to-last start in the minors, he came in after the "opener" and got his ass kicked (7ER). I'm not sure whether he, their Ace, prepared the same way he would have for an actual start and that's what impacted his performance. BTW - welcome Jadewi - good first post. Later

    That made me chuckle and think what two other managers of that era might have done. Earl Weaver would have waited for a three run homer and Gene Mauch would have done his usual unexpected and have the batter bunt for a base hit. Good analysis. Later

    In the predictions thread, I think someone predicted they would win 84 games*. They seem to be heading toward that kind of result. Later * = I predicted 82
