Because if the position gives the world 2-3 more years of Albert Pujols hitting, I could learn to tolerate it. But it also gave us several more years of a Paul Molitor, without which he wouldn't have made the Hall of Fame. He had his arguably best years after he didn't have to play defense, and those added counting stats (and rise in his career BA) put him over the top. I saw the possibility of things like rule-inflated numbers getting players into the Hall and cheapening old records when the rule was first announced - and I was right. Later
Lefty hitting catchers with not much power, even playing mediocre defense, tend to stay in the majors for many years. (See Burgess, Smoky as an extreme case) I see the same for Thole. This year, Vic's .275 - 5 HR numbers look pretty good in 120 games. But no way to predict how many of those games will be as a starter and how many as a pinch hitter. Later
The best prospects players are usually among the first players sent down when the minor league camps start, so they can get more regular work. When do the minor league games start? Later
This is the first I've read that Nimmo has had knee problems. Ah, by the time he reaches the majors, they'll have too many good hitting kids so they might not miss him. I'm saying 2014 to be a contender. (Making other teams sweat about a playoff spot) 2015 and beyond - consistent contenders. (Kicking other teams back down the mountain) Later
Nice. Thank you. Yes, you could look into the Polo Grounds from the overlooking Coogan's Bluff (and other high points walking toward the park from Broadway toward the East River). I lived on Broadway a few subway stops from there. On a nice day, instead of taking the A train to 145th street and changing to the uptown D train to 155th (the Polo Grounds stop), we would take the local to 181st, change for a downtown local to 155th, and walk across. I just noticed the hitter backgrounds in front of the bleachers. Folks were sitting there and I wonder if they had to move to the side to be able to see the action or if the screens were a dark mesh they could see through. Later

Its spring training - time to work on things. Yesterday he was working on his home run pitch. That seems to be ok, so next game he'll work on his doubles pitch. By the end of ST, he'll be working on his out pitches. There's still plenty of time. Relax. Later
Starter at Buffalo. Cuppa' joe with the Mets: 23G, .222 in under 75 AB. Curly, Blondy, Squinty, Pearly and Blacky will all have their hearts broken by me. No matter how much they beg, I will stay with my beautiful wife. Later
I think he'll still start off the season a little rusty, so he'll have some "That's not where I wanted to throw that pitch" moments, especially with the new outfield dimensions. But I also think the offense will be able to keep him in the game (and away from the bullpen) longer, especially when he's on a roll. 31 GS 15-10 3.56 ERA 187 IP. Later

I hadn't seen him play that much, so I checked Baseball-reference. You're right. When I was a kid, Clete Boyer was considered the best fielding third baseman, so I had his career .965 FPCT* etched in my mind as a way to compare other third basemen. Very few have come close. Brooks Robinson beat it, and blew me away. Inge has a .961. That's up there in very rarefield atmosphere. Thanks for pointing that out. Later * = didn't have the expanded defensive statistics back then. Fielding percentage was the only one.
It was a good team without Fielder. With him, they're scary good. Jackson leading off puts their manager in the school of "If he's fast and plays center field, he's gotta' lead off." And Inge playing second? He'll make Murphy look good by comparison. Like Murphy, his best position is at bat, his second best is third base. But getting Fielder put the wheels in motion. Cabrera moved to third and they needed a place to play Inge. So, second base it was. But still a scary good team. Later
Just checked in on the game 4-2 bad guys. Were any of those runs charged to Santana? Did Schwinden inherit the runners or were they his? And, with Wright out for another week (as per Yahoo sports), why isn't Zach Lutz getting some time at third? Later

What grinds my gears is the opening sentence "For the first time in 36 years, a soccer game is set to be held at Yankee Stadium this summer." And thus the media-assisted mythology that allowed the 1976 Yankee Stadium II to be the same place where Ruth and Gehrig played is now considering the four-year old ballpark to be the same place that Pele played. At least with MFYSI & MFYSII one could argue that they were built on the same site but there's no excuse for this BS. Edgy, its on a Soccer site, most likely written by a guy who only lives and breathes soccer. He probably can't find MFYS II with a GPS. I'd give him more slack than if this were on the MFY site, written by one of the reporters who cover baseball. Or by the MFY PR department. Later
