  1. Yes it would almost have to be the first appearance in Houston but no mention in the Snooze archives of any number. I did see where in addition to knocking out Jorgensen, Hassler foul-bunted in St. Louis, breaking Ted Simmons' wrist. He was a wrecking crew
  2. Hassler had also recently come off a beaning that hospitalized Mike Jorgensen when he joined the Mets. baseball-reference lists Hassler as having worn uni #50 in '79 (in addition to the number I remember #44). Anyone?
  3. That Strokes song was garbage. No Met content either! (at least not till 4:22 when I quit on it).
  4. I met a guy at a new year's party who said he was a Michigan grad who holds season tickets, and so has met both Fred and Jeff. FWIW, says Fred these days is out to lunch, might be dealing with dementia or other affliction of old age. And can confirm Jeff's an arrogant dick who thinks his brief moment as a professional (who never played) gives him baseball authority. Also confident that Cohen would be baseball's wealthiest owner once he takes over. I hadn't given that much thought but he might be right.
  5. The Tuesday Night Mets Club will be back in 2020. There are 11 Tuesday home games this year but we will be attending just 9 of them: skipping the earliest one in April and found the MFY tickets just too expensive. Our strategy is to win tickets to that one in a radio contest. Making up for that, the TNMC will hold a special Thursday Night edition two days after that Yankee game. That unfortunately makes it 3 games vs. the Marlins. We get no Phils or Nats, but will see the Giants, Cards, Dbaggs, Rockies, Reds, Braves and Astros. Right now, there's a promo online for a la carte ticket buyers where you get a $10-per-ticket discount on each game you add to your cart; only it's rigged so that the availability progressively narrows to the more expensive seats (and the MFY game wasn't eligible). After 5 games the Promenade completely vanishes for example; but in the end small compromises on $$, good variety of locales. The most expensive seat we bought was $39. If you're doing the same the TNMC advises selecting tickets in reverse order of the importance of good seats. The related GTrain Army is looking into their annual road trip in Oakland this year but more likely they will do something less elaborate like Washington or Philly this year.
  6. Escorchation in Action.
  7. First there was Jefferson ✈️... And then, Jefferson 🚀 ... And finally, there is Jefferson 🔥 ... Don't you need somebody to love? Do you believe in Miracles, baby? Then meet Jefferson Escorcha!, my 19-year-old lefty adoptee from Venezuela. Jefferson scorched the Appalachian League last season, going 7-1 with a 2.38 ERA in 15 releif appearances, punching out batters like Hell's Angels at Altamont. This after building a city on the broken bats of DSL hitters for 2 seasons. He's been sureallistically pillowing up near the end of some top prospect lists out there, noting his ability to induce weak-ass contact behind a sizzling curve that leaves hitters finding their way back to the bench. 8. I'd bet the Mets are looking at 26 guys and the wacha/Lugo/gselly thing as a way to regularly institute a bullpen game in the rotation
  9. I was a Sherlock fan; I found myself in favor of most moves that I identified as Alderson initiatives, but seemed like the Omar Takeover marginalized him, busting him down before letting him go.
  10. Mickey has a better headline and a more meaningful event covered.
  11. It really is. Unfortunately, the very next day the Mets barely showed up and I (prematurely but not really) officially joined the I Give Up thread.
  12. Considering this move came with cooperation of the Umpires Local, it's not a thing that is going to get rid of Angel Hernandez, at least not any faster than retirement
  13. I had a hard time making the connection to real-life marriages like yours and mine this relationship wanted to reflect in the extreme. I mean, I guess. I know it was also based on a novel I didn't read but which I assume gets more into the source of her wealth and its impacts, but that whole aspect also didn't seem to make a salient point in the flick other than to contribute to its length. All that said, the performances were pretty good -- the lawyer, his sister etc -- and it held my interest as a story.
  14. Guy has hot wife. Hijinx ensue.
  15. I got the sense that Mazza was the kind of guy who would serve as a kind of emotional wake-up call to the existing stiffs in the bullpen: Here's a undrafted old-school rubber-armed guy who'd run through the wall for you and not get his performance all wrapped up in palpable anxiety of how he's being deployed. Only, they didn't give him an awful lot of opportunity to demonstrate that and his performance only got him so far. They're at least getting rid of the guys with the stupidest uni numbers.
  16. In that case it was clearly better than it's opponent, and I do think my impassioned defense--and the irl news that lifted the prescience of this cover--helped to swing the jury. During that process I also fell emotionally in love for this cover and prepared to die on its hill in the same way I died behind the YA GOTTA RELIEVE cover of a few years before
  17. It's meant to be hard to look at! If this is the end for FR, it should be in the running for the "Audience Choice Spirit of Tabloids Award" which makes a charitable donation in the name of the tab cover that best illustrates the absurdity of devoting entire pages to sports and athletes.
  18. FOLLY RANCHER is the best, come on fellas
  19. Tendons like the achilles can and do "grow back" after a tear if properly treated and not aggravated while healing, that's why the injury takes a long time to recover from. And if you do the right things (stretch & strengthen the leg/foot muscles) you can survive like before. Many people (like me) who get an achilles injury in one leg can just as easily get one in the other so it's something you need to manage.
  20. Wacha posts a Topps-style faked look in his new uni. Doesn't include a number as Ces has 52. Paddy Power is taking action on what uni he turns up in: https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/1205613049140387841/85LhwWeu_400x400.jpg>
  21. Danny Garcia was like TJ Rivera. New York area undrafted guy who Rose to the majors on the strength of a decent bat. Garcia was more of a pure infielder than TJ and more of a singles hitter. Iirc, they gave him #12 about 5 minutes after trading Alomar. A few years ago I was at the batting cages in Ridgewood with Lunchpail and Danny Garcia was giving hitting lessons. His hourly rate was more than I'd part with tho. Edit: that batting cage guy wasn't Garcia but Kevin Baez.
  22. What an inspiring win for FOLLY RANCHER! And getting mid-tourney social oxygen is really good news for those many fans who put down longshot bets with Paddy Power.
  23. It turns out you can make this stuff up. What a disaster
  24. They say he can make back some but not all of $$ thru performance bonuses. He should definitely juice his way back, get called on it, then argue its the mets who deserve punishment
