  1. I really love the Puppet, Pauper, Pirate, Poet, Pawn, King set and want to collect them all
  2. Wagner 30% Sheffield 29% Kent 32% Abreu 9% Bell, Putz, Valverde >1%
  3. Jeets won't be unanimous. Too many smarty-farty voters in their mom's basement now
  4. Carlos is on record saying he would require an "experienced" bench coach, which I take to mean an ex-MLB manager or bench coach so I dunno if Cora who hasn't held either job yet would be the best fit if that's so.
  5. =LWFS post_id=26733 time=1574099996 user_id=84] Hey, good news! It may be Jeter AND Schilling AND Clemens!
  6. Actually, KING OF POP! is better than 53! More creative headline goes to the Post. Picture is the same. Newsday's reproduces better here but on the newsstand they probably look about the same. Where Newsday falls short is the awkward breaks, lengthy and somewhat exaggerated exposition in the subhed that they doomed themselves to by going with the one-word hed. Alonso new rookie Sultan of Swat after record blast Post's subhed is much more succinct, doesn't insult memory of Babe Ruth and tells the story. I will give Newsday the edge for layout, putting the distracting box on top rather than along the right edge. But that's the only area where they beat the Post head to head on this story. Clear to me the Newsday editors were trying to win the bullshit "most positive news" contest with this cover and not the "tabloid derby." btw, I also voted for OVERRULED, which was a unique take and a good headline but IMO, not as strong as POP
  7. FWIW, "Mets Ring 'Bel" cover image isn't appearing. Not that I'd vote in such a stupid headline so I doubt it'll matter.
  8. I've seen Wheeler pitch a lot and can confirm he's very good and will make the team he signs with better, including the 2020 Mets
  9. They are running together for me. I can remember Ryota Igarashi was a real disappointment given he came with the best bonafides while guys like Ken Takahashi who came with little fanfare was actually pretty reliable for a while
  10. The Diaz Game was probably the most important single event of the year, tightly tied to the narrative of the entire season. Well-packaged tabloid coverage shouldn't lose to less significant events just because one is "positive" the other "negative." That's a topic for the the "Most Positive Event" Derby. This is a contest ultimately judging how stories were told and sold in words and pictures. The gravity of the event described--if it's conveyed well-- ought to matter.
  11. There's lots of guys who would compare unfavorably to peak Matlack. Most similar by age rating at 24 was Tommy John, bunch of other era contempoaries and one Dan Casey: http://www.springer66.net/2018/07/22/the-mighty-casey/http://www.springer66.net/2018/07/22/the-mighty-casey/
  12. Wheels is going to get dirty stinking rich this winter. I'd really like him back
  13. Kashiwada was the first Met from Japan, I believe. 1997? Takashi not Katashi That was one cool Valentine thing. 3 Japanese vets on short-term deals were as good as 3 years of David Weathers.
  14. Shogo's prosthetic right lower leg could come in handy too. Mets used to be the biggest Japanese importers since your local Honda dealer but haven't had an Asian guy since ... Dice-K?
  15. By "ramped up" they mean, "added someone other than Jeff's brother."
  16. Astros are a disgrace between hiring sexist finance bros, shady management, the deny-and-cover-your-ass approach to PR. Eff them
  17. He provided a good example of Bing Devine's active GM-ing in BD's short tenure assembling the core of the '69 Mets. Bought in May from the Orioles, hit .348 mainly as pinch hitter/reserve 1B/3B, flipped after the season for Art Shamsky. Traded a lot but liked by teammates everywhere he went, according to his SABR bio and Jim Palmer
  18. I voted for both Smash Davis! and Strip Club! even though they will compete in this contest and probably lose. I dislike that the post uses the "inn." abbreviation but I like when they remind readers of other covers they've submitted for the TCD.
  19. I didn't know Delcos but I observed it as kind of sad he'd been let go by a paper then was blogging it with the mom's-basementers. Not sad for him so much as sad for everything. Anyway I just read that Bob Johnson (Bob W Johnson) passed away. He was an ace righthanded-hitting pinch-hitter for the '67 Mets , hitting .348 in 90 games/248 PA. Then traded after the season for Art Shamsky
  20. Good sussing. I don't subscribe to The Athletic. The name is literally too jocky for me
  21. The dueling POLAR EXPRESS pages, each with the exact same "Bear Down" subhed, would be a single strong contender were it for the other. Instead they look destined to cancel one another out, victims of their own too-predictable cleverness. I wonder if the dueling hed writers communicate secretly as rivals, bluffing one another
  22. Teammates will mob the bride and rip her shirt off.
  23. Our old friend Jeremy Hefner is the clubhouse leader as the next pitching coach, Tracky says. Heyman says its like Chili Davis returns as hitting coach
