  1. Yeah pretty long and stupid game
  2. That's great
  3. Piazza busted it down the line there.
  4. No, I agree the Mets have tended to gather in and develop a buttload of fringy pitchers in recent years (good) but don't exhibit any courage of their convictions in committing to them (bad--for them and the pitchers). As a result we run through these guys like popcorn. It's true that a small number of them will ever develop into something better but it doesn;t seem like they even have interest in seeing that happen. McHugh and Gee are examples of guys of that ilk who can succeed but only Gee really ever got a full-blown, actual opportunity and that was mainly because he came up during a period when they couldn't afford as many options. They never act like a team that just says we're gonna go with Oswalt/Rhame come what may and relegate them to light duty if they must. Instead it's one start here, 2 blowout relief jobs there, etc etc . Probably difficult enough to be a prospect without overwhelming stuff; this kind of treatment can't help them.
  5. At the risk of being a spoiler, David Wright likes playing baseball
  6. "Friendly's had this dessert called called the Cyclone, filled with soft-serve ice cream, peanut butter cups, and peanut butter sauce. I may not have done much drinking or partying as a minor leaguer, but I never said I was perfect." This book is very controversial
  7. Speaking of Carter, I reread DREAM SEASON recently, and that's a pretty good book. I can remember having a lot of yuk's here over that unfortunate passage where he describes the physical closeness of the club then reminds the reader that he'll have to kill them if they interpret that to mean he has a "gay streak." But overall, his cowriter did a real good job, it's very readable, moves along, and the format works, recapping each postseason game with context and stories from his career. I'm on page 49 of the Wright book and so far, he really loves playing baseball.
  8. I'm reading this David Wright book and can report it's exactly as I expected it 20 pages in.
  9. Reinsdorf was also a close ally of Fred. That was one area where Fred and Doubleday differered in that Nelson thought Reinsdorf was a shit for drafting Seaver
  10. Just wanna see a good series is all
  11. What a jocky douche Bellinger is. I'm trying not be a get-off-my-lawn fan but if you're going to make a show of your series-winning home run the stand-still-at-the-plate-and-admire-it act, followed by a let-loose-the-excitement-with-a-shoulder-separating-jock-elbow-lovemaking-session-once-you've-completed-the-slow-trot is about 300% more douchier than the sky-high-bat-flip, or the Fisk-Carter manuever, or a hundred other ways I can think of, because its so calculated and gross.
  12. Braves will stew all winter on that dumbass baserunning
  13. Yeah I am willing to give some 2nd stringers a shot but it can't be the strategy. I can hardly believe the Mets had a starting 5 of deGrom-Syndy-Wheelie-Stroman-Matz/Lugo/Whomever and thought they'd do better breaking it up. And we've been over this before, I'm certain that was only accidental. Bauer is a ... colorful guy. Also, I don;t think anything deGrom tells him about the run support will a-will sway him or his agent in any way; b-be news to Bauer or anyone else with a passing interest in baseball; c-believe inadequate run support 2 years before actually matters or is likely to continue given he's be joining one of the best offenses in the National League;
  14. Yeah that's true, you can usually tell a "fresh" hockey team from 1 that played the night before
  15. Wonders never cease at Typewriter Chewing Gum
  16. I was interviewing a consultant I know who works with private equity guys for work and we always end our conversations with baseball. He says his familiarity with Cohen indicates he'd be willing to spend like crazy within the confines of a "plan" based on increasing long-term franchise value, and smart leadership, generally what PE guys do.
  17. Yeah, I also zoomed out at 6-0. Not that I necessarily like them or are rooting for them (even tho I guess I am), but the Braves are completely admirable organization in many ways (and shits in certain ways too). But the way they seem to 1) Constantly develop useful and/or star-level MLBers 2) Reliably find the right short-term free agent or free-agent-to-be at the moment they need to 3) restock the key leadership positions knitting long-term to long-term 4) seemingly do all this without the strenuousness and drama that would accompany the Mets' efforts to do the very same thing is something to see
  18. Yeah that Johnson photo posted on fb is what he & I responded to: I let Bruce know that his predecessor in the 31 jersey wasn't Johnson but a different Mets' manager, George Bamberger.
  19. I sorta knew that rumor too. I thought it came from Pearlman's 86 Mets book but I think I looked it up again and didn't find that. There's a few pics of him sitting pretty close to another guy on a couch on his fb. NTTAWWT. The hat though. That's offensive to me
  20. Responded to Bruce Berenyi in a facebook thread. Mets Rewind group. Clicked over to his page, and it's all Trump. I was an innocent in 84 and really admired the guy. Other C-level celebrities behind Trump I Facebook browsed: Romantics singer Wally Palomar, which is a shame because he's in Michigan
  21. Backless ballplayer found in topless bar isn't so great a headline
  22. Didya try with the light blue right border? They make sense framing a circle
  23. Dear Typewriter Chewing Gum Co., I like the presentation of the names in the new subset, not sure I like the the borders but can you turn these cards over so I can see the back. Also, do these cards scale to standard BB card sizes? Signed, Roger Kaputnik
  24. Morgan in 75 and 76 was as complete a player (power, speed, defense, average, walks) as I can remember in my lifetime. Yup. I'll also say a lot of smartassy mom's-basement dwellers devoted too much energy to trying to get him fired from ESPN. Morgan had an old-school perspective and said dumb things he shouldn't have on-air ("billy Beane shouldn't have written that book") but I thought the Miller-Morgan team was the best SNB combo ever as far as companionship on national telecasts.
