I like the kitchy stuff the franchise has done. I miss the neon players. I don't. I can live with the homer apple, but not something that was a relic of the late 1980s-early 1990s that should have stayed with that era. It also gives more ammunition for those who think the Mets operate on a minor league level when it comes to their presentation. Also from Coors, there's the mile high line in the upper deck painted purple. I think it'd be fun to mimic that at Citi, painting an entire row of seats around the stadium orange. Doesn't ahve to mean anything. Or you could put it at the height of Agee's Shea home run. or you could wait until if/when a Mets player homers to the upper deck. Or just start painting the seats orange that Mets hit with home runs. make the outfield seats look rather speculed, but it'd be fun. Not possible anymore due to the smaller seating bowl. I do like the idea though of bringing back the orange and blue colored seats. Maybe have blue in the Prom and Field level (including the Apple & Bridge seats), and orange in the middle.

The suspension of Jacobs, who is currently with Triple-A Colorado Springs of the Pacific Coast League, is effective immediately. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20110818&content_id=23385540&vkey=pr_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb So he did live up to Val's well crafted nickname for him, Jake Monster!
  3. I'm sorry, I thought the idea of having an "Ace" or at least a solid starting rotation was able to get them to rack up the wins. I mean, then why did Philly go out and assemble one of the more historic ones? Sure it's about the TEAM, but at the end of the day, things are a lot better when the starters have more wins than relievers do.
  4. Also interesting, Rollie and Sutter are the only ones of that list to not play in the bigs since 1990.

And, sounds like he exaggerated a lot. I would tend to agree (assuming you are being serious), but there are several examples listed in the articles, both in the Post article and the website I linked to in the MFYLDB thread, of his stories changing through the years. It's one thing to be a full out huckster, but it does seem that Halper was an outright fraud.
  9. Isn't this why we have the MFYLDB thread? =
  10. Edgy DC wrote: It's funny how this team may have been more Latino before Omar took over, but the snorting contempt followed his ascendency. It's also funny that the Mets were printing Spanish versions of the yearbook going back to 1988 and were doing the ethnic weeks as far back as the late 1990s. Yet the narrative is that it started once Omar was hired.

[/idiot wfan caller] I need to interject my favorite example of idiot sports radio speculation about a PTBNL, and this one comes from a host on WEEI in Boston on the day David Cone was traded to the Blue Jays. Guy thought that there actually could have been a possibility Cone was to be Harry Chitied back to the Mets.
  12. AND we have no idea who threw out the ceremonial first pitch? Geez! Not I really care, but I think this is the first time ever that it has been skipped in the telecast.
  13. FWIW, would this be happening if A) the ASG was not in Phoenix and/or one of the victims was tragically related to a professional scout? Does it matter? No, not really, but that was back in January, not like it was in May or June. I guess the only way I can see it being worthwhile is if Congresswoman Giffords throws out the, or one of the first pitches.
  14. Frayed Knot wrote: Wasn't this the game that all the Latin players were going to boycott over the Arizona immigration law? Guess they forgot. If I'm not mistaken Adrian Gonzalez was the most outspoken player of that "movement", so I'm kind of surprised he didn't pull a Jeter this week. Well, maybe not so much, but when you are that outspoken, one would have thought some follow through on your threat in some fashion would be in order.
  15. This MFYLDB is having a "Coulda had a V8" moment now! Finally, the New York media has realized that the "free" tickets Christian Lopez got in exchange for giving Derek Jeter's 3000th hit ball back aren't going to be so free after all; the New York Times figures he will have to pay at least $14,000 in federal taxes on those tickets.Sure took the press long enough to figure this out -- and they still haven't realized he will have to pay state taxes, not just federal, on the 50K of swag he got from the Yankees. So much for all the great karma the universe was supposed to bestow on Lopez for his deed, huh? To quote some MFYLBS who will be at MFYIII this coming weekend; that was your first mistake, you took your lucky break, and broke it in two!* *Paul McCartney's "Too Many People" off of the Ram album
  16. Edgy DC wrote: Yeah, I scrolled through my mental database of Norman Rockwells and the only thing I'm coming up with is that "Rain Delay" one. And those clouds were sorta ominous. I'm thinking it's not the only painter O'Connor knows so much as that he wanted to imply all-American-hero-ness in Jeter's actions. I would have said Americana in regards to the MFY and MFYS III. but that works as well.

To be fair, the rise of national television packages, specifically the NFL as that does seem to be more prevalent than other sports, did give rise to out of region fandom. I know this nugget has been forced down everyone's throat since the day he got drafted by the Yankees, but it isn't as inconceivable as it was if this was say 1961 or so. Hate to play the devil's advocate card again, but would you'd buy it if a Met draft pick had the same sort of "backstory" where they are from a different region of the country, yet had a relative who lived in the geographical region who was a Met fan, and that got transferred to him? We generally buy it about Wright don't we? Of course, he's got the added AAA team backstory in there. To be fair, and yes you have to jump over the Phillies and Orioles to do it, but chances are you'll find more Yankee/Met fans in the state of Virgina than you would Yankee/Met fans (if they aren't transplants like MGIM of course) in Michigan. And of course Norfolk/Tidewater was the longtime home, at the time of Wright's childhood into teenage years anyway, of the Mets AAA team.
  18. Edgy DC wrote: I don't think it's remotely inconceivable. I just think it's such a convenient part of the propaganda package that it picks up the stench of the garbage it's attached to. Oh I don't doubt it, and am just as nauseated by it (the whole destiny angle and all), I'm just putting it out there that there probably is some kernel of truth to it.

  20. It appears a major MFYLDB and memorabilia collector was a big scam artist! Damned Yankee: Was Steinbrenners Partner the Madoff of Memorabilia?
  21. Ceetar wrote: I like it in theory, but what's next? MVP patches? I think it could create a caste system of sorts on the field, which wouldn't be the best thing for a team sport. (and now i'm surprised the NBA doesn't do this) I don't know if they still do, but a couple of years back the warmup gear of each player included the patches of past ASGs the player was selected to.
  22. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I didn't even remember that Craig Biggio had 3,000 hits. Jeter reaching that milestone will mean as little to me as it apparently did when Biggio got there. (And Biggio, at least, is a homey; we're both from Smithtown.) Funny enough, I've heard an ESPN Radio blowhard once use this type of logic as to why Biggio should NOT be a Hall of Famer, but that argument would fall apart based on the amount of national scene ink, bandwith, and airtime Jeter has generated through his career as opposed to Biggio. It also falls apart when you consider the next thing the guy said was Jose Canseco deserved to be in the Hall of Fame over Biggio based on Canseco's continued notoriety in his post MLB life, as well as the notoriety he had in his career.

You could try I suppose. I'm just saying they have motivation$ that go beyond the sentiment on the banner, who's to say they whether they believe in the cause or are just trying to sell shirts? Have to agree with Bucket on this one. Could be them trying to cash in on a popular cause these days. On the flip side, they are making Carter shirts, with proceeds of the sales going to brain cancer research. So they are out to make a buck, but I think they do have a self-awarness when it comes to how to go about doing their merch.
  24. Hey, you did ask to bring something to the table other than what MFY fans felt when it comes to a Reyes-Jeter debate.
  25. Fine, I talked with one impartial observer of the same conversation, and he said I was nuts for ever taking Reyes over Jeter (again at any point in his career) and agreed with the assertion that it would be a bad trade for the MFYs to take Reyes off of the Mets' hands. Reyes is simply not that good, and his career stats bear that fact out, and is more of an example of the New York overhype than Jeter ever was.
