No, but get enough people like Kay, Madden, etc in the media hammering the points, that starts planting seeds of "hey, maybe this guy is worth more looks"

I'm disappointed in Hodges counted out, but I can accept an argument that places him behind Santo and Oliva. But Kaat? Kaat even came out himself and said he wasn't a HoFer; referred to himself as a number-three starter. Kaat has a ton of MFY friends in the right low places (Kay for example). Especially using the "same or lesser" arguments with guys like Sutton, Niekro, Blyleven, etc
  4. Ah. I stand corrected, and bumed out. Yeah, if Tony Womack is on the ballot, why isn't Alfonzo?

Surely enough to rate one line on one ballot for one year. Which is why I'm thinking we'll see that in 2015, because he played professionally in 2010. This will not happen. It took Warren Spahn more than 5 years after his last MLB game to appear on the BBWAA ballot because he played two more seasons in Mexico and in the St. Louis chain.

Eric Young? Hell, poor-man's-Eric-Young TONY WOMACK over Fonzie? My own speculation, and this is based on the idea of Warren Spahn apparently getting the same treatment, is that he did spend time in the Independent Leagues and Japan from 2007 through 2010, and that could be the reason for not placing him on the ballot until 2015.

  9. Or as I suggested, one of the few featuring him in actual action, and in full profile during his prominent Met tenure Here is the other base set one from 1974 set 1972 In Action Not great pickings for image reuse. Though thinking now, that IA card looks ripe for this thread!
  10. 1) Despite a latter era photo Topps is honoring Seaver's being an All-Star Rookie in 1967. 2) Very much the same photo used on Topps 1977 Seaver card. 3) Despite my personal distaste for the concept of constantly producing more product featuring long since retired players, even the legends, kind of cool to see long since retired players on current card designs. 4) Fine example of Seaver getting ready to rock a fastball, even includes the dirt on the pants there. 5) Picture is clearly from 1976 as the Joan Payson/Casey Stengel armband is visable. 6) Dig the late 1970s look of Shea with that brick wall out there, and green fences. 7) Pretty decent set that this card is from called Lineage which features both retired and active players from each team. 8) Photo clearly got cleaned up as the the classic clean pinstripes seem to pop a bit more and there is more clarity in the 2011 version as opposed to the 1977 one. 9) The 1977 one was a rare action shot of Seaver as a Met in the base Topps set during his first Met tenure, 1974 is the only other time. Strangely enough he does have a card in the 1972 In Action subset, but his card is of him reacting to something off the mound at Shea. 10) Fuck it, I only have 9, it's a good fucking card.
  11. As much as I'm on the "Reyes leaving isn't as big as Seaver/Strawberry leaving" side of things, I'd be highly disappointing if it turned out the Mets never made an offer or were at least given the right to counter. Seems WAY to fast for this to have happened without something from the Met camp. And this actually gives Reyes bowing out of the final game an even more distasteful feeling. Seriously, that was it? THAT is your final moment as a Met? No chance for fans to give you a possible final farewell? And don't give me the "blah blah Ted Williams blah blah, Gods don't take curtain calls blah blah" Updike crap. Alright, rant over... Oh, for what it's worth, MLB Network is saying that the above report is NOT true. So we do have some conflicting stories going on.

Aaaaaaand this fourm wonders why a pool in Panama was set up with a lethal (with the lethal being on purpose by the home owner or not) amount of electrical voltage running through it's security system...
  14. I'd much rather have a thread like this dedicated to fictional characters

To be fair, he was on the 1920s Cardinal teams, and got in the Hall thanks to the Frankie Frisch Veterans Committee. In other words, he ranks among the leading contenders among the "why is THIS GUY in the Hall" Hall of Famers.
  16. Giant Squidlike Creature wrote: Giant Squidlike Creature arrived in the 2001-2002 offseason when the Mets could have signed Squid for a song. Squid returned the following offseason but was still shown no respect. So Squid became the forum archivist. Squid is versatile like that. So is Squid still annoyed that it didn't get the call for the Watchmen movie? And does this mean the person behind the Squid might be returning?
  17. FINE! Had a sense of history, wearing Jackie Robinsons 42 with the Royals and --- and, finding it retired and himself ineligible to get a grandfather exception when he got to the Rangers, Rockies, and Dodgers --- switched to Willie Mays' 24. I wont bet he gets either of those numbers with the Mets I wonder why he didn't get grandfathered into 42 the way others did. And wasn't 24 also off the boards in LA? HAPPY PAPPY?

Three GM regimes ago (if you count Duquette as his own guy and not an extension of Phillips) but I wonder if that's yet another shot at the Art Howe hiring, and therefore a not so subtle suggestion that Fred & Jeff still carry more weight than the GM. Course that is giving Heyman too much credit in his jabs...

Heard a St. Louis reporter the other morning compare LaRussa's bullpen phone gaffe to Mays' "performance" in the 1973 World Series. Comparing them how ... as two things which occurred on a baseball field but otherwise couldn't possibly be less similar? Legends having "senior moments" Basically saying LaRussa was having his "Mays in 1973 World Series" moment.

  22. Barry Lyons in 1986: 10 plate appearances, one walk, and no hits. Improbably though, he had two RBI, one on an groundout to the pitcher and one on a groundout to third. And as such, the most confusing of the many Mets featured in Topps' "Fan Favorites" sets from 2003-2005. I'm shocked Billy Beane didn't make the cut on those. He actually did as a Twin using the 1986 design on one of those years.
