    2024 was also a very late-developing year with the team quite bad for a while. Versus, say, 2022 and the hot start that year.

    Attendance is always trailing a year behind team performance, which is why bad years like 2017, 2023, and 2025 are still among the most-attended. That 2026 (second bad year in a row) was still up there was a bit more surprising.

    I’ll be curious to see what new voices might bring to the table on major-league player development. Over the past three seasons, it seems there’s been a significant lack of development (and/or backsliding in development) for Alvarez, Baty, Vientos, and Mauricio. Maybe the answer is that none of them are very good — but each (maybe not Mauricio very much) have shown they can been good at times.

    Final paid attendance for 2026 was 2,712,120. Down 472k from 2025, but still the fourth highest since Citi Field opened.     Stearns was hailed as a “young genius?” Derivatives of that term are used pejoratively all the time around here but I’m not so sure that’s a fair description of how he was initially percieved

    Perhaps the outcomes this year will help spur changes to the currently-dumb playoff bracket system. #1 overall seed Tampa is going to get a bye to the division series, but instead of getting the privilege of playing the lowest ranked team, they’ll play the winner of BOS @ NYY, also known as the the second and third-best teams in their league. (Positive news for Tampa: they probably won’t be playing those games at 1 PM on a weekday). The Brewers have a 1.5 game lead over the Dodgers (plus the tiebreaker) for the #1 seed in the NL. There, #1 is actually desirable since that seed would avoid the Braves* in the DS round. *Assuming the Braves defeat whichever wild card team they face.

    The Mets ambassadors were there: Darryl, Mookie, Keith, Hojo. Maybe David counts as one too, although he lives in California and seems to be in NY only very occasionally. It’s the non-ambassador teammates that I was surprised to not see (excepting Valentin and Endy, of course).

    Fun day at the park. Beltran ceremony was very good and Carlos had some very nice words. Very classy way to embrace the fans and he was clearly quite emotional - even choked up when addressing his daughter. Glad to see him recognized and I was pleasantly surprised by how big the crowd was (37,468 paid, and a healthy amount in the stands for the ceremony). I too was surprised there weren’t more teammates or other key figures there — would have liked to see David, Willie, and Delgado there. Re: pulling Scott in the 5th: if this was a game that mattered, I’d say it was madness. For a guy coming off a major injury and who is already more than 25 innings beyond anything he ever threw in a single season? Seems like prudent load management. Benge got a standing O and tipped his cap after the record-breaking hit. Crowd seemed oblivious to the fact that Raley was returning. He did not get a tribute video tonight but by tradition it would have been Thursday.

    I think that’s the best place for him if he’s not going to be a permanent DH. Also I dislike the other options for first base (internal options are poor; free agent options unexciting).

    Easy: 1. Soto and Lindor and healthy and produce as we are accustomed to 2. Brandon Lowe is signed as a free agent 3. Either Bichette stays or Teruaki Sato is signed to play third. Either one far surpasses their 2026 production. 4. Randy Arozarena is signed as a free agent. 5. Baty, Young, Polanco (if healthy), and Morabito are bench players. None of these moves are optional, of course. Will it cost a ton? Yes. Will they still need to sign Skubal and Holmes? Yes. But this will get it done for the offense.

    They also won 101 games in 2022 and then made the NLCS in 2024? When a once-in-generation-talent hit free agency the Mets had the financial wherewithal to make him a Met? Obviously this season is an abysmal failure and followed a disappointing 2025 but 2 good years out of 6 is still a much higher ratio than any of us have been used to. The team has had massive increases in payroll; supposedly they have made big investments to upgrade scouting, development, and analysis; there’s been a concerted effort to embrace players’ families to make the Mets a desired destination; and the giant scoreboard is the single most important upgrade to the ballpark experience in the 17 seasons the place has been open. Sure, a lot has gone wrong. Maybe hiring Steaens will turn out to be a horrible misstep by Cohen (if this isn’t the nadir of his tenure, we’re in trouble). But overall the long-term outlook is still trending positive.

    Of course I get the joke but this is actually Bassitt’s second contract since leaving the Mets. After 2022 he signed a 3/$63M deal with Toronto: 95 starts, 109 ERA+ in 540 innings; 4.8 WAR. Not a bad signing at all.

    Monday was the game everyone picked to see Pete. They got 35,800 on Monday night, which was the largest crowd since July and actually out-drew two of the games against the Dodgers (which were weekend games in the summer and not a Monday school night). 28,097 last night. Probably will be a bit less tonight.

    Piazza homered (twice) in his return in 2006 and also got a curtain call after the first one. But it certainly wasn’t a tying homer in the 9th.

    Great to see Tong pitch well. Good to see Ewing homer. And great to see how much love the fans have for Pete…but overall this game was just very depressing. A long-ago eliminated Mets team has their best crowd in months only because a beloved franchise icon is returning when he shouldn’t have been allowed to leave. Separately: Alvarez looks completely lost, completely fooled by anything that’s not a fastball, and was barely running down the line when he grounded out to third in the ninth.
