    This is the first of three ESPN games this year. All are weeknights (the others are the first game post-All Star break in Philadelphia, and the series finale against Baltimore in September). Joe Buck (yes, oddly — he is doing this game on ESPN) has play-by-play with Ronnie and Orel Hershiser on color.

    There’s no shame in the Mets losing this 2-1. The Dodgers are a significantly better team. It’s the losses to St. Louis (not even trying to have a good team this year), Sacramento, and Arizona that are so maddening, because those aren’t good teams.

    If we’re walking Ohtani, may as well bring Williams in now.

    It’s sitting right next to the evidence of Tommy Hunter’s back spasms. The ones that got Billy Eppler in trouble for misusing the IL.

    Devin Williams has fallen off the chart because he hasn’t pitched since last Tuesday against Arizona.

    Not a bad outing by the bullpen. Maybe someone there can hit too.

    If Polanco was well enough to play in the field I’d consider more Alvarez DH and Torrens in the lineup against lefties

    The Mets hold an option on him for 2027 but this is the last guaranteed year on his contract. Obviously we’ve heard in-the-moment calls for his immediate firing. Thinking realistically, how bad would things have to be for a move to be made? I’ll set the over/under at a .500 record and <6 games back from the division on May 31. If the Mets can’t accomplish that, Mendoza can’t continue. That’s 59 games in, with 36 of them coming against the weakest* opponents the Mets will face this year. *Proprietary Gwreck formula, averaging a team’s 2025 record and 2026 FanGraphs projected record. The bottom 10 are well-represented in the Mets’ March/April/May schedule: Colorado (6 games), Washington (6), White Sox, Angels (3), Minnesota (3), Pittsburgh (3), Sacramento (3), Tampa, St. Louis (3), and Miami (6).

    I could see a situation in which Stearns is fired but there’s way too much baseball left to be played and thus this discussion is silly at this point. Stearns didn’t make Soto hurt or Lindor/Bichette bad. If those 3 players all wind up having reasonably-standard seasons for them and the team still misses the playoffs? Ok, we can talk about it then.

    What does this accomplish? Serious question: how does firing Stearns mid-season fix anything? Let alone the publicity and perception problems it creates, as well as the difficulty in hiring a replacement.

    He actually plays outfield so it rebalances the roster. There are no true impact bats available at this time of the year. It’s a hope he has some sort of late-career renaissance (like a Jose Iglesias) or at least lets the Mets sit Benge without always having to play Baty or someone else unqualified in the OF.

    I’m very disappointed with the Mets’ play this season but it’s only 16 games and thus saying the team has gotten worse is really not based on enough. Stearns has a 5 year deal (this is the start of year 3). I highly doubt he is going anywhere, even if the Mets fail to make the playoffs this season.

    I was thinking about this more in contrast to the early May 2024 game against the Cubs in which Alonso was called out at the plate trying to score the tying run in the bottom of the 9th on a sac fly. And Mendoza didn’t hold back, or say “yeah, we could’ve scored more runs earlier” (which is true) — instead he was clear that he though the umpires had the call wrong and that was the deciding factor. I remember being very impressed with that answer and the candor. The Pittsburgh game continues to bother me since it was so clearly in-the-moment the wrong decision, and all he had to do was say “yeah, a mistake, it won’t happen again.” But no such candor to be had.

    Couple of thoughts: 1. Mendoza was chosen by Stearns. So if he’s not the right manager (quite possibly), that’s on Stearns too. 2. It’s really early to render judgment on Stearns.

    Maybe Luis Garcia came down with a case of ineffective reliever syndrome and needs a short IL stint.

    I assume that’s some sort of message Mendoza is sending to Stearns about the lack of depth on this team.

    We need this thread for Lindor, Bichette, Polanco, and Benge too.

    Well…you have. We can be fair about this too. Luis Robert Jr. entered the day leading the league in on-base percentage and he went 1-3 with a walk today. Not a lot of complaints with his approach. I’ve also been generally pleased with Alvarez and Vientos had several good games. Bichette and Lindor and Semien? Not so much.

    Fun fact: this is a totally different guy than the one on the Dodgers. He just happens to have the same exact name and play the same exact position. Great KTE.

    I’m not at all astonished. The offense was put together on the hope/assumption that multiple guys would improve/return to form/could repeat what they did in a relatively small sample size last year. And of course that was before the best player went on the IL.

    Offense is terrible, but also: Mets learned in a powerful way tonight why it helps to have real outfielders playing in the outfield.

    It’s only been 10 games, but he’s not hitting at all. After his great opening day (1-3, 2 walks, a homer) there’s been a total of two hits and 3 walks in the next 9 games. The defense is solid (and he’s looked ok at all three outfield positions) but if he’s not hitting, how long before we worry?

    A couple thoughts: 1. My understanding is that the 40-man roster is doesn’t have 40 men on it right now - only 38. So adding, say, Tommy Pham to that roster isn’t a big problem. 2. I understood that Melendez was playing regularly at Syracuse. I did see he had a .613 OPS in 30 PAs, so not exactly good in not exactly a meaningful sample size. 3. I would have called up Morabito if Pham isn’t ready to go yet. I’d also have considered Clifford (who isn’t hitting much in Syracuse).

    Ehh. Isn’t Arenado a bit of a douchebag? -Told the Cardinals after 2024 that he’d accept a trade to a very specific set of teams, the Cardinals work out a trade to one of those teams (Houston) and then Arenado says “just kidding, nope, won’t accept that.” -Wouldn't play in 2021 in Canada because of vaccine nonsense. -Needlessly escalated shit with the Mets in 2022 when he got a slightly-inside fastball.
