    Despite having increased his innings total by 100 over the prior year, he was there to throw 6 shutout innings in the penultimate game of the 2025 season to keep the Mets alive for another day.

    According to the MLB.com rankings. Stafura is now the Mets #11 ranked prospect. Weaver (and Brazoban) were certainly being sold high, but the reason I had a problem with the Brazoban trade was that he’s being paid under market value and has multiple years of control still attached. That can’t be replicated on the FA market the way paying $11M/year for a premium reliever (e.g., Weaver) can.

    I remember the thread and surely participated in it. I believe the end result supports my analysis: money wasn’t the limiting factor as to why Pete wasn’t retained.

    They also didn’t make an offer before knowing that. (I suppose at some level it can be argued that the Mets did have a financial cap on what they were willing to pay Pete, since they didn’t want to do a 5 year deal. But as established by the 2/$54M deal they agreed to in the prior offseason, the holdup certainly was length and not the annual salary amount).

    No one is suggesting that Stearns has done a good job overall. Full stop. Once we get past that reality (and/or if we are able to stop incessantly complaining about Stearns’ age and/or other self-created perceptions about him), how do we evaluate these specific set of deals? -One reaction I had is that it seemed like the Mets paid higher prices for relief help last year than what they received this year. Of course the market is different year-to-year, but what it took to get Soto and Rogers and Helsley seemed like more than what the Mets got for Raley and Minter and Weaver. -The prospects acquired from PIT and CHC are the most exciting. -One wonders how many of these new prospects will last in the Mets system beyond this year if the strategy is to use prospects as trade bait this offseason.

    Couple of thoughts: 1. Reportedly there was interest in Torrens, which makes sense to me (outstanding defense, team control for 2 additional seasons). 2. Senga’s contract isn’t really an albatross. $14M next year and then he’s a free agent. He does have no-trade rights to block deals to 10 teams. Made sense to keep him since any return would be selling at the lowest value, and maybe with different coaching the Mets can get him right. 3. Manaea is the pitcher who I thought the Mets might be able to move if they ate money ($25M next year) given his more promising results of late.

    The key distinction here is “the answer.” Robert was not a bad a lottery-ticket acquisition: he cost little to trade for other than the money. He’s got massive talent and if he can stay on the field he’s excellent defensively with huge upside potential offensively. Now, depending on Robert to be a key contributor as an everyday player? That’s where the problem lies. I do get the desire to have him on the team.

    I hate to break it to you but selling at the deadline is specifically designed to make your team worse in the short term.

    1. 11 pitch at bat resulting in a leadoff double in the top of the 8th to start the rally in the legendary game 161 in Atlanta in 2024. 2. Massive home run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game against the Yankees this year. Struggled (badly) at times but was overall a great fourth outfielder. Agree; seemed like a great teammate and all-around good guy. He’ll be missed.

    It was a money crunch that led to those departures? That’s breaking news to me. I was very much under the impression that deGrom wanted to leave New York and the Mets simply didn’t want to retain Alonso. Wasn’t it well documented that the Mets didn’t even make Alonso an offer this offseason?

    According to DiComo, Rojas now becomes the highest rated prospect in the entire Mets farm system (based on MLB Pipeline rankings).

    Significantly better than what they’ve received for any other players. His leg has healed and the Mets badly need starting pitching for 2027. Trading him doesn’t help that.

    I disagreed with CF about Peralta in another thread but here I absolutely agree: barring a massive haul, far better than what’s been seen so far, you keep Holmes and either get him back for 1 year on the QO, get QO picks, or re-sign him.

    Also the remaining schedule. No more Dodgers, only 3 games left against Atlanta, Milwaukee and Philly. 15 games in September against other selling teams (WAS, MIA, SF, BAL).

    At some point the money might be a limiting factor but we haven’t seen that with the Mets very much under this ownership. The bigger issue is that Peralta is not good. And while I fully agree that the coaching staff is not worthy of being retained, I’m not at all confident that Peralta is going to rebound. I think it’s far better to move on to someone else.

    This is the first guy coming back who seems really exciting as a prospect.

    Ken Rosenthal reporting that the Rangers asked if deGrom would waive the clause and DeGrom said no, but it wasn’t clear if it was for a specific deal, or if it was perhaps a check-in to see if was even worth exploring a deal.

    “Freddy Peralta on a one year deal isn’t a bad bet” is doing a lot of work in this analysis. We got a pretty good preview of that, right? 22 starts, an 83 ERA+, and -0.2 WAR. That’s ugly. Peralta could easily have taken the QO and then you’ve signed up for that ugliness another year (at about $25M), hoping that he’ll be better. Seems very unpalatable. Getting the QO picks would require keeping him AND he gets better so that he doesn’t take the QO AND hoping that some other team is willing to sign him so you actually get the picks. Just too many variables versus the certainty of taking whatever you can get now.

    A solution for what? And I’m not sure I understand why any of this means they should have traded him. He’s under team control through the 2029 season, but is making only $1M this year. You could cut him in the future if he’s bad, but he’s been good for two consecutive years now. He’s precisely the sort of player you keep for next year.

    Brazoban is Dominican, no? He was their closer in the WBC I thought (again underscoring it was odd he never got any save chances with the Mets).

    Reasonable, but since he’s a free agent at the end of the year and the Mets don’t have meaningful games remaining with Philly, it’s a “meh” to me.
