  1. ]Those two alone certainly are very valid arguments to put Ruth in the same category as Robinson in terms of cultural and historical impact on the game. not in my mind they're not. ] To say nothing about Ruth's place among the all-time great all-time greats. which imo is not a reason to even think about considering retiring his number for teams he didnt play for.
  2. that guy is a big fucking hack. NO number should ever be retired again across baseball, hows that?

Santana, Maine, Perez, and one of Pelfrey/Humber/etc likely means secent money will be spent on one starter not two, with the usual bargain bin 5th starter types hanging around hoping for a chance.
  4. i dont buy that argument for pedro. working backwards and including the last 11 expensive multi-year deals, whether signed by the mets or acquired by the mets (so i'm treating trading for a guy with multiple expensive years left to be the same as signing that deal yourself) if i missed anyone i apologize, i just skimmed through the transactions on the mets website. Johan Santana (8 year deal) N/A Luis Castillo (4 year deal) N/A Scott Schoenweiss (3 year deal) N/A Paul LoDuca (acquired with 2 years left on deal) mediocre Carlos Delgado (acquired with 3 years left on deal) BAD Carlos Beltran (7 year deal) GOOD Pedro Martinez (4 year deal) N/A Mike Cameron (3 year deal) mediocre Kaz Matsui (3 year deal) horribly BAD Tom Glavine (3 year deal) mediocre/good Cliff Floyd (4 year deal) GOOD i think the jury is still out on Pedro because if he is great the rest of this year and doesnt get hurt again he'll have given the mets 2 good years, 1 average one, and one injured one which i think is a net positive...but if he misses alot more time this year or is ineffective his deal was a bad one. i feel that schoenweis and castillo will be bad deals when they done and over with while santana will work out. either way this is a very mixed record of success with free agents, most of whom came in highly touted (if memory serves only schoenweiss didn't) i don't know what will happen to teizeira, but i'm just saying we have reason to be wary of free agents
  5. yeah, the mets are shedding delgado and pedro's contracts and considering what those guys have given the mets its not like that same amount of money is needed to replace their production. i like teixiera but i've reached the point where i'm always worried about a free agent, if the guy is so good why'd his old team not re-sign him? the braves aren't broke (and neither was texas), so if they're letting him go i'm mildly concerned. we all thought dekgado would turn out great too.
  6. he also has suprising 9 steals in 10 tries so far this year, putting him on pace for his best total since 2002. his OPS+ is still only 90ish thanks to that disgusting SLG%, but thats always been what you get outr of him. i'll be very suprised and happy if his OBP is over .360 at the end of the year,
  7. shows how little attention i pay to the other league. ARZ fans gotta be mad, with 2 on and 2 out Chris Burke grounded out...on a 3-0 pitch
  8. mets radio crew break out the dick cheney hunting jokes!
  9. Some omissions are too painful to talk about: Groundhog Day, The Servant, The Lives of Others, Psycho, The English Patient. Groundhog Day is great, Psycho was an average film at best, and keeping the English Patient off your list gives you instant credibility in my mind. Still, the exclusion of Citizen Kane from a top 100 is inexcusable. I agree with vic that a waiting period to put the film in proper perspective is generally a good idea. there have been "best picture" winners that i dont think belong anywhere near the list (i'm looking at you forrest gump) while not one but two of the movies they "beat" for the award are generally considered list worthy by any sane person (shawshank redemption and pulp fiction)

    Heilman is

i voted "still has a ways to go", but the last two outings have at least given me hope that he can get back to where he was.
  11. not worth a new thread Wakefield has thrown only 61 pitches through 6 innings and is trailing 1-0, and it being the AL he cant be pinch-hit for. Not that he'll necessarily do it, but who was the last pitcher to throw a complete game loss?
  12. Tatis wins the game!
  13. Amezaga homers to give the Marlins a 6-5 lead.
  14. ENDY CHAVEZ!!!

  16. ="KC"]Who is Eric Carmen? did metfairy mean Eric Cartman, the whiny fat kid from South Park?
  17. pathetic that castillo is top 5, and the way beltran's numbers look he shouldn't be attracting many votes either, the mets all-star will likely be david wright as a reserve on name value alone, though more deservng (as of right now) would be Church or Wagner.
  18. stretch time as santana gets out of it with a big K of Uggla
  19. another big E for reyes
  20. Castro keeps it going with an RBI single!!
  21. Tatis gets it done with a single. 2-0 Mets!
  22. sac fly easley, 1-0 mets. come on Tatis, 1 run is NOT good enough
  23. bases loaded nobody out for beltran.... and he hits an infield fly on the 2-0 pitch, fuck. come on... easley?? bating 5th?
  24. After holding a meeting and saying willie won't be fired, I'd have to think it will be awhile before the ownership considers firing him again (even if they were actually considering at all.) He probably has until the all-star break, at least.
