  1. great job by Sandy! now lets upgrade somewhere! anywhere!
  2. Eddie Murphy almost starred in Star Trek IV per a bunch of random internet stories like this one: http://movieweb.com/star-trek-4-voyage-home-eddie-murphy-character-details/ is this new information, unreliable bullshit, or something that has somehow escaped my attention all along?
  3. glad he is back and glad its only for a year. the Free Agent list this year has a few prominent relievers and not much else. Walker was a top 10 position player out there if he had become free, and that is scary for a team that wants to improve. available guys who aren't stuck in a corner outfield spot or 1B: Dexter Fowler (CF), Justin Turner (3B) and then probably Walker.
  4. I think Colon comes back and it doesnt take too long - he likes it here, the Mets know they need the depth and it wont take a long-term deal.

I think you are conflating 'common sense' with 'poor emotion-based decision making' Cespedes is certainly a good player, but the Mets shouldn't pay him based on what he's done for them already. "Analytics" is very good thing - The Mets can look at players like him and project his numbers over the next X years (where X is the potential offer) and decide what those years are likely to be worth. The other available options, the state of the roster, etc certainly come into play but you need to establish what you believe to be a baseline of value first. the fact that the Mets are in "win now" mode may also come into play - they may be willing to to eat some lower value years at the end of a multi-year deal in order to get the guy they feel they need now. but that decision needs to be made with the knowledge that that is what they are doing - not with the blind faith that every other player (who wasn't on steroids circa 1995-2005) has declined as they got older but this one won't.

  7. this is awesome
  8. If the Rays offered us Smyly "for free" (take on his entire contract and trade them a minor leaguer who is unlikely to ever make the bigs) I'd probably say no.
  9. given the salary and production this year there is no reason to cut him before spring training. if better options show up in the spring, do it then.
  10. I would keep d'Arnaud as the starter with a Rivera-type as the backup on opening day and hope for the best. He still has a higher upside, and at lower cost in dollars or trade chips, than anyone they could get from the outside. Plawecki plays every day in AAA so you can see what you have there too. The pecking order remains fluid if one guy hits and the other doesn't.
  11. It seems obvious to me that you make the offer. As mentioned they could trade him after the "signing" (the mere act of agreeing is the equivalent of signing) although it wouldn't be easy to get equal value if other teams know they have to deal him. if you don't make the offer, you get NOTHING, not "equal value", in a trade, since there wouldn't be a trade. so the question to ask (assuming the Mets don't want him and would try to trade him if he accepts) is not about equal value - its about whether you would trade the dollars you are eating in the trade for the players you are getting back. If, for example, you think you'd need to eat 5 million to trade him to the Dodgers for Alex Wood the proper question is "would I trade 5 million for Alex Wood"? - because you never planned on keeping Walker anyway.

This is definitely true, but until such time as they institute a non-human strike-caller, framing is a good (and pretty measurable) skill. much like a basketball player who is good at pretending to have been fouled.

  16. thought we were fucked there, yeah Curtis!!!
  17. Why is Bumgarner arguing balls and strikes at the plate??? smile and throw that pitch next inning...
  18. ugh TJ! well, at least Rene got to 2nd
  19. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Noah: 59 pitches through four innings. That's not too bad. Hopefully we even it up here and Bumgarner has a 38-pitch inning. how do you feel about 28? not a bad inning there
  20. must win WS. those are the expectations I had going into the year. injuries derailed that for awhile, but hey, we're here. lets do this. with Matt Harvey limping out to pitch the 20th inning of game 7 - theres nobody else left - Willis Reed style!
  21. Lefty Specialist wrote: ESPN story line already laid out. Madison Bumgarner is awesomely awesome. Do you think they'll follow the RNC's lead and just post the "Giants win" story already?
  22. I hate the espn broadcasters already.
  23. MFS62 wrote: What would Salas' innings have been if extrapolated over a full season with the Mets? I think he was here one month. 17 X 6 is 102. Would Terry have used him that much? Whose innings would he have replaced? Later he can start by taking all of Bastardo's innings
