  1. Stark and maybe Ed Werder the only real surprises on that list - many are people who report on sports that barely anyone follows, ex-athletes/execs whose 5 minutes are over, etc
  2. metirish wrote: Cubs at Cardinals Man, I wish Jon MIller and Joe Morgan were doing the game Because your MUTE button needs exercise?
  3. Tanaka 7 earned runs so far, game is only in the 3rd inning. i hope this is what the yankees season looks like!
  4. G-Fafif wrote: Mensch on a Bench is totally a thing. https://mobile.twitter.com/Scoreboard_com/status/838781686217310208/photo/1 So are Ike, Ty and the Israelis, now 3-0. the American Jews are 3-0! how abnormal are the WBC's eligibility rules? i know they are stretching things because there are only a dozen or so countries that legitimately play baseball, but where are other international sports on this? Soccer's international rules allow anyone who establishes residency (but not citizenship) for 5 years to play OR anyone whose grandparent, parent, or self was born there. that second criteria is both stricter and looser than the WBC's - I'd be eligible to play for Israel in the WBC but not Soccer. Who would FIFA let me play for if one grandparent was born in territory that has variously been part of Russia, Poland, the USSR and Belarus?
  5. Israel & Netherlands basically advance on the strength of an AWFUL 'pool' designed to give the host country some wins that they couldn't find anyway. Still, I think Israel was 200-1. If you knew they'd escape the first round wouldn't you have put your $10 down?
  6. Frayed Knot wrote: Israel now 2-0 after beating Taipei If you want to know how sloppy WBC play can be, I've never seen this in all the years i've watched MLB - bases loaded up by 5 and Israel drops down a suicide-squeeze attempt... the Pitcher and 1st Baseman both charge the ball but the Catcher picks it up and makes a strong throw to the First Base Bag... where nobody is covering. the 2nd Baseman isn't even in the frame. 3 runs score. [crossout]Batter[/crossout] Bunter to 3rd on the play.
  7. i like the concept but that is a poorly done graphic
  8. just took a look- who the heck is paying $300 for a replica Freddie Freeman Canadian jersey?
  9. Edgy MD wrote: Draftees not named Kaline don't go straight to the bigs. They almost always start out in summer-only leagues. I don't see anything wrong with the choice. Your hypothetical "summer surveying intern" probably gets paid a few thousand at most. These guys are getting offered hundreds of thousands if not millions to delay school and take a real job seriously - because a minor league career is just that - a real, full-time job and not some half-assed "summer job". If they don't like the commitment, they are free to make other choices. My point was simply that it is an incredibly dumb move - likely fed by dumb advice from the more "mature" adults in their life - to turn down a job that instanty pays you 10x or more the cost of college in order to go to college. if you really do have the academic ability college then college is there later and you'll have more than enough money to fall back on it. and if you are just a "dumb jock" who can't get in to a good school without the athletic career then its probably the right choice to take the money anyway!
  10. That 2010 draft was the Bryce Harper year, and the Orioles nabbed Manny Machado with No. 3. Mets did well in that one! 1 Bryce 2 Jameson Taillon Pittsburgh Pirates 3 Manny Machado Baltimore Orioles 4 Christian Colón Kansas City Royals 5 Drew Pomeranz Cleveland Indians 6 Barret Loux Arizona Diamondbacks 7 Matt Harvey I went to see who was taken after Harvey in that first round - some players who will likely end up having better careers than him: Syndegaard, Chris Sale, Christian Yelich, and maybe Aaron Sanchez, but also a ton of guys who never made it out of the minors - even high picks who only played a year or two of pro ball! There was one guy who turned down 2 million dollars to go to college. he got hurt a few times, isnt playing now. someone maybe should have told him that two million dollars could have paid for college, grad school, and a big party the entire time he was doing it if baseball didnt work out.
  11. this actually sounds like a great idea for entertainment, which the whole point of talk radio anyway
  12. Over at ESPN, Curtis Granderson gets mentioned as a potential beneficiary of strike zone change as he sucks at the bottom of the current zone that would move up http://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/18708283/if-strike-zone-moves-which-mlb-players-win-lose
  13. there is also the joy of being an owner, which may have no price for some rich folks.
  14. Ceetar wrote: yeah, because Loria honors handshake agreements? Why is Trump trying to buy the Marlins and is that legal? He decided America has been made great again and its time to move on an face new challenges.
  15. Centerfield wrote: Frayed Knot wrote: Gee Keith, do you think that might have something to do with Tebow being essentially a beginner thrown into his first game action in a league which is often used as a showcase for teams to put their up and coming hopeful stars? Look, the odds of Tebow ever appearing in a ML game are a thousand to one if not longer. But I'm not sure who's worse, the football press who's pissed off at him for committing the sin of choosing to do something with his life other than football, or the baseball purists who act all offended by someone who doesn't come up through the normal channels even one willing to subject himself to the tough road of back fields and bus rides. I think what offends the baseball guys are the idea that a football player can fail at that sport, then just jump over and play baseball. I think they feel that this suggests that baseball is in some way easier or inferior to football. I think this is why they go out of their way to insult Tebow and say things like he's the worst guy in the universe, bla bla bla. I'm not a football guy. I really don't get the attention given to Tebow. I suspect they also go out of their way to attack Tebow for his political leaning and/or high-profile Christianity. I'm sure Tebow isnt very good - but Law would never say that about another guy.

  17. I like how someone said "we need to write 'SPRING TRAINING' on this so that everyone knows its just a March money grab in Florida and not part of the REAL YANKEE TRADITION [TM]"
  18. Law is always (justifiably in my opinion) higher on guys he thinks can play average or better defense in the big leagues at SS/CF because the bat doesn't need to develop as much for the player to make a positive impact
  19. for example members of Islamic faith can often use the accepted tenet of predestination as an excuse for reckless behaviour - i.e.: Allah will call for you when it is your time & therefore you don't necessarily control the fact that driving at 100mph makes you more likely to have a crash Not allowing women to drive probably hurts their numbers as well - you have the dual issue of men being more aggressive drivers and men being even more aggressive drivers when a woman is backseat driving.
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: The one common detail about all these recent crashes (Ventura's, Marte's, and Fernandez's anyway, don't remember about Taveres) is that all were described as occurring "early Sunday morning", aka: late Saturday night. I thought that too - Herm Edwards said it best in the long (but still enjoyable) speech he gave to the NFL Rookie Symposium a few years back: nothing good happens after midnight.
  21. Yeah, he isn't a BAD player where you just want him off the team. either the trade market will sort itself out with an injury elsewhere or the playing time will sort itself out with an injury here. its ok to sit on a redundant asset if nobody is paying fair price.
  22. very little interest this year? can we post the high/low/avg for each player so we can have a frame work for some debate?
  23. Mets Guy in Michigan wrote: It does not end well, trust me. when i read Cooby's post I was of course immediately thinking up Jeter jokes before I even finished the first sentence. too bad the book turned out to be fictional
  24. Mets Guy in Michigan wrote: Encouraging to see Edger Martinez getting closer to 70 percent. Bodes well for eventual selection. I still don't know about him. its a tough sell.
  25. Edgy MD wrote: This is destined to someday enter into a coroner's report, as in "The apparent cause of death was blunt force trauma from a cast iron baseball form doorstop." "The victim purchased doorstop, his wife beat him over the head with same after seeing the CC bill"
