  1. 2020 was a strange year. Because of the shortened season, there were very few covers that represented game action that emerged from the first round. Still looking for that tie-breaker vote! Only 14 people have voted so far, and previous polls have had as many as 18 votes, so there are some recent voters who haven't chimed in yet on this one.
  2. Officially announced today.
  3. I saw a brief clip today while watching Mets Hot Stove, of Ron Darling saying, "I was lucky to play on some great teams in the 80s, but this is the Mets' Golden Age". I think it's too soon to say that. Maybe if they had played deep into October in 2023 instead of posting a losing record. For me, the Golden Age would still be 1984 through 1989, roughly. Thoughts?
  4. Another 8. This time I failed to think of a Cub/Royal. I probably eventually would have gotten Ben Zobrist.
  5. Just ten minutes ago, literally, I was wondering what ever happened with him.
  6. Hampton was a rental, as Cease would probably be. But Santana was one of those deals with a negotiating window; they knew they were acquiring him for multiple seasons.
  7. Although some of the single guys ❤️ their mom.
  8. I was a big fan of PICCADILLY CIRCUS, but it got eliminated a few rounds ago.

Newsday, October 4, 2024. 10. I'll say Jared Young. Not that I know a damn thing about him, but only because he fits the criteria and why not? If I turn out to be right, I'll collect the $10,000 jackpot!
  11. Whenever it includes Tampa Bay, I'm doomed.
  12. We have our finalists! Much to the dismay of a vocal minority, Newsday's ALONSOMG! has won a narrow victory over the Post's HAIR FORCE WON! Newsday also notched a victory in our other semifinal poll, with SUPERMANAEA edging the Daily News' NO SLEEP TILL THE BRONX by an even more narrow margin. This marks the first time in our ten years of Tabloid Cover Derbies that the Daily News was not one of the finalists. It's also only the second time that we've had two finalists from the same publisher. In our inaugural TCD, the Daily News won both slots, with YES-PEDES earning the victory over CON4TO! Though the final winner is yet to be determined, Newsday is assured the honor of being represented behind Maja's desk in Stockholm. This will be Newsday's fifth title, tying it with the Daily News. Voting for the sixth and final round will begin tomorrow, Tuesday, February 11.

  15. The significance of the event pictured influences our perception of the cover. I think ALONSOMG got further than it might have if it had depicted a game in June.
  16. Oops, I overlooked Jeff McNeil, 822 hits. He also has a (somewhat outside) shot at getting to 1,000 this season.
  17. I'm a little surprised at how much attention Pete's chase of Strawberry's Mets home run record has been getting. I didn't think that many people paid attention to this kind of stuff. I know I do. I remember noting when being in the Mets Top Ten finally required 100 home runs. (George Foster stopping at 99 delayed that much anticipated day.) We still don't have ten players with 1,000 hits. Darryl Strawberry is in ninth place with 1,025. Howard Johnson (997) and Jerry Grote (994) came tantalizingly close. Daniel Murphy (967) would have made it if he hadn't left the Mets after 2015. (Or if he hadn't missed the 2010 season.) The next guy to 1,000 will probably be Brandon Nimmo. He's 180 shy, and it's more likely that he'll get there in 2026 than in 2025. His career high is 162, in 2023. I'd certainly welcome a 180-hit season from Nimmo.
  18. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I think its still possible they trade for Cease. My offer is Sproat, Baty and Megill for Cease and medium-shit prospect My first reaction was, "Oh no! Not Sproat!" But I have to stop thinking like that.
  19. I don't really care about the money either. If Steve Cohen is willing to spend it, it's perfectly fine by me. But the Mets often signal that they don't want to spend crazy money, and then take on an expense of $60 million for one year of Pete Alonso. So... wow.
