  1. An interesting article from ESPN's Jeff Passan. Many articles from ESPN seem to be behind paywalls, but this one isn't: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44096180/mlb-2025-spring-training-oakland-athletics-tampa-bay-rays-minor-league-ballparks-sacramentoWhat A's, Rays moving to minor league ballparks means for MLB https://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2025%2F0305%2Fr1459803_1296x729_16%2D9.jpg&w=920&h=518&scale=crop&cquality=80&location=origin&format=jpg>
  2. It looks like Steve didn't preview his post before submitting. I used to post baseball card images from http://www.tcdb.comwww.tcdb.com -- it's a great source -- but not so long ago they did something that causes it to no longer work.
  3. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Just the practice of having portraits shot from under the chin was weird, then they go and paint them. I miss that ragged production value in today's world I wonder, did they take an under-the-chin photo for all (or most) players just in case they ended up on another team? Or did they just do it for guys who are in the journeyman category. In 1975, for example, there was probably little chance of Tom Seaver or Joe Morgan or Willie Stargell changing teams. But maybe they took those photos anyway. Interesting... I never thought about that before. I have an in-law (actually a de facto-in-law-in-law) named Bob Gallagher. Not the same guy!
  4. When they traded for him, I figured he would be a non-factor, but now I'm not so sure. I think he'll get about 280 plate appearances and he'll make a few key contributions.
  5. “Commissioner Rob Manfried is considering a petition filed on Jan. 8 by Pete Rose's family to have Major League Baseball's all-time hit leader posthumously removed from baseball's ineligible list,” ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr. reported. “MLB sources acknowledged the commissioner met with Fawn Rose and (Rose's lawyer Jeffrey) Lenkov and that Manfred is now reviewing the petition to reinstate Rose.”
  6. I'm hopeful about this guy! Put me down for 22 starts, 4.05 ERA.
  7. I'm kind of iffy on him too. I fear he may fizzle like Ike Davis did.
  8. It's like he was the executive to be named later in the David Stearns deal.
  9. In theory, batting Soto second instead of fourth would get him 36 extra plate appearances over the course of the season. I don't really have a feel for whether or not that would have a significant impact on game outcomes, but my guess is that it wouldn't. Maybe I'd go Lindor/Nimmo/Vientos/Soto/Alonso.
  10. Nimmo at cleanup feels weird, but I can see that it's because of the desire to alternate lefties and righties. I think I'd flip Alonso and Vientos. That change may come to pass later in the season.
  11. He turned out better than I thought!
  12. Oh no!
  13. Microsoft Windows tells me that today is International Polar Bear Day. There's a family of polar bears that lives in the house down the block from me. I'm going to invite them over for dinner.
  14. =MFS62 post_id=186178 time=1740693045 user_id=60] When he came to the Mets, Eddie Murphy had the reputation of a badass. When he got here, I saw that you can be a badass who your teammates and fans like, as long as you take it out on the other team. Later
  15. Why not? It's a minor league contract, so no risk here. And if he provides any help at all, it's a good move. The more depth the better. And who knows, maybe he'll pitch 50 or more halfway decent innings.
  16. The name Mike Howard pops into my head. I think he was in the Opening Day lineup in 1983, on the day Seaver returned. Could he be our guy?
  17. Until I saw Keith Hernandez play every day, I thought first base was just a position where you put your foot on the base and catch the ball.
  18. Kelvin Chapman?
  19. Pete Alonso.
  20. All I remember about Karim Garcia is that he was caught urinating in public somewhere. Him and somebody else. They were then called "The Whiz Kids".
  21. This should have been an easy one, but I flubbed it. I thought that Gil Hodges had been an MVP with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
  22. I think people care about Captains. I don't know why, but they do. The fact that Jeter, and Wright, and Judge, have been captains has gotten plenty of press. I would advocate for Lindor being captain not necessarily because I think it will have any real impact (although maybe it will?) but because I think he would feel honored and he deserves it.
  23. I'll split the difference. .258, 30, 85. A solid player, but no significant MVP support.
