    I read some speculation somewhere (likely from one of the beat reporters, but I don't remember which one) that the Mets had always been likely to eat the last year of Semien's contract (2028) but might also be inclined to eat 2027 as well. The old Robinson Cano treatment.

    This trade looked bad from the start. I doubt that very many people are surprised at how it turned out.

    That's interesting. Did they intentionally tarnish the cap to make it look black? If so, they could have just given him a "blue" cap. Here's Seaver's plaque for comparison. Does that look like a Giants cap?

    They may decide to go for the best player available, but I would like it to be a starting pitcher or a corner infielder.

    And they could trade Holmes and then bring him back over the off-season. That doesn't often happen, but it did with Jeurys Familia.

    I can't believe I said Pete Harnisch for Alaska! He was born in Commack, NY, practically right next door to where I grew up in Smithtown. And I knew that! I used to be in a bowling league in Commack! My nostrils are flared in embarrassment.

    I would think so too. I hope they keep Holmes. But SMG's suggestion of sweetening Peralta with a Weaver (or maybe a Raley) may be a better tactic than just trying to get someone to take Peralta alone.

    Do you think it's reasonable to expect a manager to have that kind of autonomy in today's game? I'm not defending David Stearns -- his shine has definitely worn off -- but I don't think it's fair to paint him as a puppet master while overlooking that his 29 counterparts very likely are also pulling strings.

    That's where I am too. Minter and Raley are upcoming free agents, so trading them isn't necessarily counterproductive. But if Weaver or Brazoban go, it should be for players who can help in 2027, because Weaver and Brazoban can.

    It's unrealistic to expect that the manager would have total control, at least not in today's game. Can Andy Green decide to make Christian Scott, for example, a relief pitcher without the blessing of the front office? Would Mendoza have been able to do that? Will next year's guy, whoever he is? I doubt it. Going further back, if Davey Johnson had wanted to move Ron Darling to the bullpen, was that decision entirely in his hands, or would he have needed Frank Cashen's approval? I suspect he would have. What about if Gil Hodges decided to make Gary Gentry a relief pitcher? Maybe in those days a manager could have acted unilaterally. I suppose we can be pretty certain that there were very few limits on what John McGraw or Connie Mack could do, but we're going back a very long time to their days.

    Keep Holmes if he's will to sign an extension. Trade Robert for whatever you can get.

    I saw a "story" saying that he asked to drop the "H", just as Peter Alonso once asked to drop the "R". My guess is that he's always spelled it "Zac" but someone somewhere assumed it should be "Zach" and he never bothered to correct it until now.

    Well, we still have four of those five guys, so it can still be eighty percent glorious.

    So not much better or worse than Freddy Peralta. This might turn out to be one of those trades that sucks for both teams. The Brewers might have been able to get someone better for Peralta. And the Mets might have been able to get someone better for Sproat and Jett.

    I generally agree with that. I've never aligned myself with the angsty "let's tear it all down and suck for the next five years" position. I think that it's important to get away from the plan to cobble together a new pitching rotation each year and hope that enough of them have a good year. I didn't feel comfortable with it in 2024, but it worked. But then they tried it again in 2025 and 2026 and it didn't work. I guess, at this point, they should look ahead with McLean and Scott and Thornton and try to get Tong's act together, but they should get at least two veteran pitchers on multi-year contracts. Injuries and disappointments are always possible, but I'd rather see them attempt stability rather than consciously avoid it.
