  1. One story has it that he didn't want to immediately replace Carlos Mendoza whom he respects. Another story said that his upcoming Cooperstown induction would have been a distraction from managing the team. Rumor has it that he's the Mets' first choice for the full-time gig. If there's a labor stoppage in 2027 it could give him plenty of time to get fired again before ever managing a single game.
  2. This is going to be an ongoing conversation, so let's start it here. It may or may not be Carlos Beltran. Apparently he turned down the interim job that went to Andy Green.
  3. And also... By 1980 every parent should have known better than to name their child Gaylord. I bet those last remaining holdouts had last names like "Crotchfelt".
  4. I didn't know he was still alive! Turns 88 in September.
  5. He thought it was pointless to talk about the schedule, I suppose.
  6. Hopefully the Mets and the Tigers will be there too!
  7. I imagine all teams are using it to one extent or another. Maybe not in-game however. If the Mets aren't using it, they should give it a try. And if they are, they should stop. Whatever they're doing isn't working.
  8. How about in the manager's office?
  9. AI is more advanced than Davey Johnson's PC software, but it's still the same thing, just to a different degree. Which is to be expected, it's 42 years later. Davey's PC would tell him how well Mookie Wilson does against a certain pitcher. But it couldn't guarantee that Mookie would get a hit or an out. AI could tell Andy Green where Bryce Harper is likely to hit a pitch thrown by Sean Manaea, but again, there's no certainty in that prediction.
  10. I don't see the need for a ban.
  11. For some reason that I never understood, this is the kind of thread that would always piss off batmagadanleadoff.
  12. I just thought of Steve Henderson. I'd love for the Mets to be able to get a Steve Henderson. When the Mets got him, he was ready to play in the big leagues but just hadn't yet. The problem is, I don't think the Mets have anyone who will get them a Steve Henderson, but that's the ideal as far as I'm concerned.
  13. I'm not interested in "down the line" either. I'd much prefer a AAA guy who's a top 30 prospect in the organization than a Single-A guy who's a top 10. Stearns is under pressure to turn things around sooner rather than later, so I don't expect him to trade for any 19-year-olds. But I didn't expect him to trade Nimmo for Semien either, so who can say?
  14. Laura Albanese in Newsday: This is what I've been thinking. I'd really like to see Stearns bring in some players who have at least a little bit of a track record and can help in 2027. I acknowledge that this is much easier said than done. The 2027 guy you might want is likely a contributor to the 2026 team that's trying to lock in a postseason slot.
  15. Frank Tanana? He had a long career and bounced around a lot, I think.
  16. Agreed. Maybe that hypothetical Benge trade would make more sense once other puzzle pieces are put into place.
  17. I can see that happening. It's not implausible that Bichette would return in 2027 and try to play his way to a better contract.
  18. I'd also be upset if Lindor went. He's been my favorite Met of the current decade. (Pete a close second.) I've seen a few reports that Holmes wants to stay, and is willing to discuss an extension. If true, I hope they work it out. There's a better than even chance that Holmes over the next few years would be a better asset than whomever they would get for him in a trade.
  19. This paragraph is from the response to a reader's question in a mailbag post in The Athletic today:
