I don't know how credible Mancuso is, but here's what he's' saying:

A source at Roc Nation, agents for Cespedes, and involved in their pro boxing division, was able to confirm that negotiations reopened late Wednesday with Cespedes and the Mets organization. And two other sources with knowledge have been able to confirm that Cespedes and the Mets are meeting with a one or two year deal on the table that is agreeable for both sides.

(Why the mention of the pro boxing division?)

I gleaned that the source was a person who works with the boxing clients, and therefore is likely something less than a firsthand witness to whatever engagement has occurred among the Mets, the agency, and Cespedes himself, and Mancuso threw in that clause to give us then necessary grain of salt.

A contract could be in the hammering-out stages right NOW!!!! Or, alternatively, Cespedes left a pair of golf shoes in his locker and wants them back.

Heyman reported yesterday that the Mets were one of few teams still in contact with Cespedes and appeared to be firm on a 2-3 year offering.

There seemed to be other reports mentioning Atlanta so my guess is Cespedes' agent is trying to drum up more interest right now and seeing if anyone is willing to go more.

Jim Duquette (on Mets Hot Stove) has been using the term "pillow contract" regarding Cespedes. I'm not sure where the term comes from, but it would be a one-year deal that would allow Cespedes to test the free agent market again next year, when, according to Duquette, there will be less outfield competition. The risk to that, of course, would be that he'd be a year older and perhaps injured.

I'm not sure what the ideal deal length is. From the Mets perspective, I'd be okay with them going to a second year, but that would probably make less sense for Cespedes, because then he'll be two years older for his next free agency.

My hunch is that he'll either get a four- or five-year deal from someone, or go for the one-year pillow deal. I'm not sure that a two-year contract makes sense for him.

I love the phrasing of "firm in a 2-3 year offering." Two to three years leaves a 50% wiggle zone.

Not that I have hope, but I think it's actually a good sign. If the agents were just trying to pump up interest, this would have been leaked to more sources.

There's always someone leaking something if the sides are talking. if they're not actively negotiating we're in the same place we've been for weeks.
