Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 Yeah, my answers were imperfectly guessed.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 I'm trying to stay open to the idea that Terry is savvy in ways I can't comprehend that a lifetime of wisdom and a keen eye for practical application of comprehensive data feeds into choices like batting Cespedes second and Kelly Johnson fifth but the decision to go to Parnell and O'Flaherty first out of the pen has me flummoxed. The former is returning from the disabled list in relation to a dubious injury following a bout of self-destruction. The latter has been lost as well, and if he's ever going to be found, it's best to try and get him into lefty-on-lefty match-ups. That the team should hit their way back out a hole only to put the game in these hands puzzles me, as it seems neither beneficial for the team nor the pitchers. Terry openly stated before the game that he wanted to work Gilmartin and Reed in tonight and, well, there was his chance.Nice little lead your team has built up, Terry, but it's too early to coast, if that indeed is what's going on.I thought I knew his game. But 2015 Terry has been an enigma.

I thought I knew his game. But 2015 Terry has been an enigma. There's a difference between in-game moves (tactics) and managing people. Joe Torre showed he couldn't cope with in game nuances of managing in the National League, When he moved to the clubhouse in the Bronx, the back pages of the NY newspapers called him 'Clueless Joe". But with fewer in-game decisions (mostly because of the DH rule, but also because he had Mariano Rivera) he could spend his time on the off the field part of the job, and he did it very well.At a Company I worked for, someone made a disparaging comment a secretary. The Director heard it and immediately called a meeting. He said (I paraphrase) "There's nothing I do on a daily basis that the secretary couldn't do. But there are several times a year when I have to make a difficult decision. And it on those decisions that the difference in our salaries is based". I look at Terry the same way. He robotically manages "by the book" during most of the season. But I'm still not sure whether I trust his judgment in those special spots. Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 I would say that I don't see his approach as operating by the book.

I can see the logic in wanting to get Parnell in a high leverage situation, but start him in a low leverage situation first. And as RD said in another thread, the only good time to pitch O'Flaherty is about 5:15 p.m.

I did partially hear Howie on the radio and he was so busy pulling a Wilmer Flores in Bobby's regard that I didn't know the details, like how many balls Bobby threw in a row. Last I heard Rose was yelling that he threw it away, on the play at first. I assumed that was Parnell but I'm not sure. Reception was fuzzy.I'm gonna go watch it now. Maybe he did leave Parnell in too long, and using Parnell & then Flaherty back to back is worse than waving a white flag, but still I'll give TC some decent slack. If we don't take tomorrows game I might start feeling different. We just gotta take two of three vs. these guys, I don't care how and I don't care in what order. And if Parnell and uh-O' are rotten eggs, find out and get em out of the basket. If Terry hasn't come to this conclusion I might be swayed to the dark side.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 Cardinals defeat the hated Nationals, who actually led 4-0 early. Feels really good to not lose a game in the standings tonight. Nationals must be ready to pack their bags and go play golf, to be up 4-0, see the Mets get smoked, and still suck like that and lose.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Okay, the Mets were down 6-0, and Terry probably had Parnell warming up because a game with a six-run deficit is a realistic time to give him an inning to see what he can do. But when the Mets scored four runs, Terry should have shifted gears. It's now a two-run game, and momentum is in the Mets favor, but Terry brings in a pitcher who had a 7.71 ERA in August. When that doesn't work out, he substitutes a pitcher who had a 12.86 ERA in August. The third pitcher of the inning is a guy who had a 5.91 ERA in August. He was managing that inning like a guy who had money on the Phillies.

Tent sites in soft pine forest, short walk/ride to the ocean. Downtown Lewes cute in an old east coast town kinda way.Someday we'll check it out. I had a friend that took the ferry there for a day every year from Cape May. That'd be fun

But he should have shifted. One thing I've always noticed is that Terry doesn't like not bringing players in after they've warmed up for a while. That's the last we'll see of Bobby P in any kind of leveraged situation, methinks.

Gary made the point last night that the organization wants Parnell to succeed -- duh -- but he looked lost out there. He was so visibly frustrated after the second walk, you had to get him out of there. Stall if you have to, have Warthen walk slowly, whatever -- but you knew he was toast.
