That's about the least surprising thing ever.

We should probably makes this a "Memories of Jordanny Valdespin" thread, as I really don't see how he plays for the Mets again.

he likely won't because he's not good.

But glad to free up the spot on the 40 man regardless (two spots really).

Old friend Fernando Martinez suspended too.

Three Dominican minor-league free agents signed during the Minaya era were suspended today. Makes you wonder who was doing the scouting in the DR, and how closely were they paying attention.

I have not heard any of the mainstream media point it out yet, but 8 of the 12 suspended today are from the DR (+ 3 from Venezuela and 1 from Nicaragua). Unfortunate coincidence or a sign of a much more serious issue?

Probably more a factor of the clinic's location. I'm sure the other guys that didn't get caught use a different clinic.

I think you're doing a better job than the cadre of Mets beat reporters who have continually cackled like Mean Girls about JV's cursing and tweeting and wearing the wrong shirt and standing at the plate too long but, despite their access and professional credentials, never indicated any inkling of the story right under their noses. Though that might be because Biogenesis and PEDs aren't a big topic in New York baseball these days.

Not even a "one Met executive has speculated the scandal might touch the major league roster" out of them. It's wholly possible Valdespin sought his edge completely out of public view, and it's also wholly possible that nobody wanted to brush up against libel laws by hinting at anything that wasn't 100% solid, but it seems highly unlikely in an "industry" in which everything gets gossiped about and everything gets leaked that nobody on the other side of the clubhouse door couldn't have/wouldn't have noticed something...unless they weren't particularly trying to find out.

Talk about a "can't miss prospect" that we missed out on turning around for a big ticket item...well when the Wilpons could have afforded a big ticket item! =;)

This goes back to our scouts in the DR. They dropped the ball on F-Mart in more ways than one.

It only distorts the record to call Fartinez a can't-miss prospect. Every last one of us knows there's no-such thing.

I don't remember him being called one. Certainly he was highly-touted, but I don't think he was one of those Chipper Jones/A-Rod type guys who were universally thought of as future no-doubt all-stars when they were still in the minors

Yeah, no its better to speculate on the past, or at least those currently in the game whom one suspects based on being prominent during the said past (i.e. waste some time on a radio talk show redoing MVP awards to the point where Craig Biggio pretty much is a multiple time NL MVP winner) and to be the ultimate arbiters come HOF election time based on the anonymity of the balloting and saying that anything else is none of the public's business!

That's fair, I was using the quotes based on the fact that he was touted as the Mets best prospects by the mainstream press, the Mets own PR folks (though I'd give more blame on the media for running way too hard on what the Mets give them) and Met system pom-pom wavers in community fandom outlets (no one here in particular though).

But essentially the point was that he was someone that was touted and could have had value in a deadline, waiver wire, or offseason trade but ended up being an injury prone DFA'd washout for the organization.

I don't think Piazza ever gets to the hall...

I think there was already a decent chance that Valdespin was never going to play another game for the Mets. Well, after a September call-up maybe.

That's a bet I'd take.

He will, after it comes out that someone who the BWAA votes in going forward was a PED user despite no "whispers" and innuendos that are keeping him, Bagwell and others out.

Perhaps, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he did.

But an eventual MemdeVal thread will be rich, as I can't think of any Mets who has left so many uniquely indelible moments in so short a period of time.

Piazza will go in before any of that nonsense needs to happen.

He'll go in. There's a damn-good case for nine of the top ten on last year's ballot. (Hard for me to get behind Lee Smith's candidacy.)
