I'm breaking the rules and starting the thread again after a loss. Gotta shake things up sometimes to break a losing streak. If you don't like it, bean me.

Shaun Marcum versus Shelby (My wife had a spider named Shelby) Miller who's coming off of a 1-hit CG shutout where he retired the last 27 to face him and struck out 13.

Against Marcum, who has yet to get three outs in the fifth inning.

Sometimes it's possible to win a game that you just know you're going to lose.

I doubt that this is one of those games, but we can certainly hope.

If this doesn't work you should be sentenced to a month of nothing but Bud Light and Old Milwaukee.

I suppose this is more civilized than sleeping with a random fat chick. I approve.

Marcum retired his last four in a row in his last start, before getting pulled early for Rob Carson. For all we know, hadn't he been lifted, he'd have gotten 27 in a row too. So there's that.

Those tend to suck. Let's get him something so awesome, he'll turn into a badass just by hearing it.

Come up with something crazy and dark metal like "The Skin of Evil."

by the law of averages, you would think that they'll accidentally win a couple games eventually...as badly as this team has played in recent years, they still haven't been bad enough to "earn" a top draft pick...

Since after the 1982 draft when the Mets picked Gooden with an overall #5 draft pick, the Mets draft pick record with better than an overall #10 pick:
2010: Harvey (7th);
2005: Pelfrey (9th);
2004: Phil Humber (3rd);
1997: Geoff Goetz (6th);
1994: Paul Wilson (1st);
1993: Kirk Presley (8th);
1992: Preston Wilson (9th);
1984: Shawn Abner (1st);
1983: Eddie Williams (4th);

That's 9 top 10 picks in 31 years with only 5 playoff seasons in that timeframe...and only 2 of those picks actually semi-panned out at the MLB level (Preston and Harvey)...

I know that average wise, Valdy isn't doing much but then again, nobody else is either...apparently he really screwed the pooch by hitting that 9th inning HR; since he's now gone 5 games without a start since then...

well Pelfrey panned out, just not as an ace, but those are the breaks.

They probably won't have a great pick next year either, but hopefully they can still improve.

Those aren't the breaks. The Mets have sucked at drafting players over the last generation and its pretty well known. It's not just because of good old random breaks why they've finished in first place in a five or six team division just once in the last 25 years. There's something foul and rotten at the top of this franchise. Is it your job to always defend against every negative thing about the Mets? Are we supposed to believe that the Mets have been a model franchise of perfection throughout this period?

What Pelfrey gave us was incredibly valuable. Not every first round pick becomes an ace. I didn't say they've been good drafting players lately, but the draft is such controlled chaos that when you get value you count that as a win.

Shelby's streak ends at 29, David Wright single up the middle.

IMO, what little success Pelfrey had was due to pitching in Shea/Citi...if he had started in a more hitter's friendly park, he wouldn't have been valuable...

Pelf's splits:
Shea: .274 batting average against; .718 OPS; 4.09 ERA; 1.374 WHIP; 10 wins; 13 losses; 10 HRs;
Citi: .261 BAA; .691 OPS; 3.41 ERA; 1.327 WHIP; 19 wins; 13 losses; 17 HRs;
Road: .307 BAA; .471 Slugging Percentage; .843 OPS; 5.37 ERA; 1.611 WHIP; 22 wins; 30 losses; 45 HRs (62.5% of his HRs allowed on the road despite his "Innings Pitched" on the road was only 43 % of his total innings);

His numbers in Atlanta, Philly and Florida were horrible (5th starter, if even that, horrible)...

But then Buck, after a good AB, screws up his base-running which manages to:
1) kill a potential run-scoring inning
2) prevents the team from clearing the pitcher's spot in the lineup
3) and stops the run-up of pitches for Shelby Miller

Take your victories where you can find them.

problem is though, these Mets under Sandy's directive are more obsessed with driving up a pitcher's pitch count than they are hitting the freakin' ball...

It's part of the game.

And beats the latter.

The Mets failed to score because of a double play on a well-struck line drive, not because they are unwilling to hit the ball. If you need a scapegoat, Knot's right. It's Huckabuck's baserunning. (If they didn't get Buck, they could have gotten Ankiel off-base also.)

According to St. Louis announcers, only 25 MLB players have college degrees. Carpenter and Craig representing for St. Louis.
