There's some crazy misreporting in that blog. For one, it makes Warthan's statement seem like it comes in response to Maine's recent Times comments, when it was said after Maine's fate-sealing start about Maine's insisting that he was OK to pitch when he wasn't. It's also a little incomplete. The full comment was, "John is a habitual liar, in a lot of ways, as far as his own health." (The Times link has the full quote and the correct timeline.)

It also unfairly conflates the team's training staff, diagnostic physicians and rehabilitation team.

Not sure where to post this so I'll post it here.

Maine Speaks Out Re: Mets Training Staff.

http://mets360.com/?p=15839

I can't believe Warthen gets a pass for that (not to mention he basically indicts himself in the same statement, saying it was on them to realize Maine wasn't 100% and you know, not put him out there and second guess yourself 5 pitches in). and Manuel making jokes about pitching lefty and on off-days in response to Maine trying to work through pain..

But media blow back and what not, it has nothing to do with the training staff as much as doctors. Maybe they should've diagnosed it earlier, or shut him down earlier, but he's admitting he fought to pitch anyway.

At the time I had M.R.I.s, and they didnt know I had tears in my capsule, Maine said. You get a cortisone shot here, a cortisone shot there. Other than going in and looking at my shoulder with a surgeon, there was nothing really more you could have done. The only thing I could have said was, Hey, Im not throwing hard anymore, so Ill quit. It was a weird situation. I was hurt, but I wanted to play.

All the reports of his surgery say he had a lesion or growth removed, or to clear scar tissue. But it sounds like the problem might have been more akin to what Santana has gone through. The recovery time fits too. As I recall, he went to a different doctor and they had an MRI done in a different way that revealed something that was hidden in a normal MRI. This articlesuggests Maine had a capsule tear as well.

I agree. And I've always thought of the problems being with the medical side of the staff as opposed to the training side.

Yeah really......

and this

Without getting involved in the he said-he said drama that always emerges via media outlets, this does make fans wonder if it is merely an isolated incident.

right , you wouldn't want to call Dan when you can drag out a years old quote , he said indeed .

Jered Weaver breaks his elbow on his NON throwing arm. It appears he whipped it up real good with the follow-through on one of his pitches and threw the whole thing out of whack. Effing weird.

That whole Warthen quote has become legend among the Ill-Informed Fanbois of the Twitterverse.

i always felt that comment was far less negative than it was made out to be. i guess i focus on the latter half of it, where warthen calls him a warrior and a competitor, and implies that john would not beg out of a game, but that it's up to the staff to notice when there's something wrong with their players and when they need to be taken out or kept out.

Zack Grienke hits Carlos Quentin with pitch - Quentin charges the mound - Grienke winds up on bottom of pile with a broken collarbone (non throwing arm)

That's one very large (and always questionable) contract that's off to a rocky start.

I think the breakage occurred on that initial shoulder to shoulder collision.

Listen to Scully building fan sentiment against Mike Piazza in that play-by-play.

And then Matt Kemp went all enforcer on Quentin, post-game. BLOOD IN, BLOOD OUT, 'LOS!

I was pretty pissed at Jose when he left and found myself rooting for him to have a shit season last year with the Marlins. Yesterday though, I found myself really hoping he was ok.

Trade for Reyes now while his value is low.

Anybody else notice Matt Kemp pulling his shirt front up and flapping it as if the only way to calm himself down was cool off his groin area? About 2/3 of the way through the Sculy video.

Don't tell Keith, but there's a woman in the Dodger dugout.

Yeah, his weak foot bones cannot withstand baseballs being smashed into them. It's clearly a trend.

How depressing would this be if Buck didn't get off to his great start. It's still a bummer but at least some things are going our way.

Wait, what made you think the inclusion of Buck was anything more than salary dump?

Posted

Sure. The Blue Jays wanted catchers with experience handling the knuckler. The Mets had two. The Mets wanted a vet who could hold the position until d'Atartagnan was ready, and maybe mentor and/or back him up once he arrived. (Indeed, they needed one, with Thole jettisoned.)

Salary is certainly a factor (it always is), but clearly there were talent assessments involved too.

If the Mets were figuring that d'Arnaud wouldn't (or might not) be ready in April, then they'd need a big league catcher. Who in their organization would have fit that bill? I think that's the main reason why Buck was included.

Well Thole, but if they were going for a one-dimensional catcher I guess they figured Buck would help with the power element.

What's interesting now is when d'Arnaud is recovered and playing again if he gets called up. I say no, that they're still consistent with wanting him to get some reps in the minors. And that's why the injury sucks for the Mets in June/July more than it's a big deal now. But if service time was the only thing keeping him down, he probably wasn't coming back before he was recovered from this injury anyway so all we're losing is him 'biding his time' in the minors.

I doubt the Mets ever gave any consideration whatsoever to starting the 2013 season with D'Arnaud. I suppose my point is that they could've stuck with Thole/Nickeas/Recker rather than taking on Buck's salary.

The part mentioned above about the Blue Jays needing to acquire catchers with knuckleball experience in the Dickey-D'Arnaud trade is belied by the fact that neither Thole nor Nickeas made their roster. (Perhaps they figured out what Mets fans already knew about their major-league worthiness.) Instead, Toronto signed Henry Blanco, who has been catching Dickey's starts.
