I'm starting to tire of all of the current griping about the Mets. Especially when it comes from some asshole like Francesca. The team's rebuilding; it's essentially in teardown mode. They're gonna suck for a while and there's no way around it. It's probably best to accept the status quo, suck it up and endure it. This was a long time coming. The FO was never willing to rebuild before, always believing that some past his sell date former star - a Mo Vaughn here or a Tom Glavine there - was enough to take the Mets over that last hump and to the promised land, all the while masking the barren foundation that the Mets were built on. The longer this rebuild was delayed, the more damage and rot there would be to fix. The day of reckoning has finally arrived and it makes no difference whether it was born from level-headed thinking or a financial crisis that threatened to strip the Wilpons of their team. The rebuild is here, and the team ain't gonna get fixed in half a season, watered down wild card or no watered down wild card. Of course, management has to market the team and sell seats, so they're gonna make unrealistic statements about the state of the franchise. We, the hard-core, should know better and shouldn't waste our time parsing Alderson's MetSpeak, looking for absurd guarantees that hint at near-future meaningful games in the late season. There's nothing wrong with hoping for the Mets to exceed expectations, but this griping when the team plays exactly as the so called expert expect them to play is wearing thin.

It isn't screaming. The gas bag opened up and let the hot air out.
He must have enjoyed the shit out of doing that.

This is incisive analysis in the broad context of where this franchise stands, but after sitting through three of these four games, I'm utterly down with Screaming MF on this one. He's especially right about Collins and his BS about we tried, we were close. The last TC presser I sat in on, during the Marlin series, included "we're only losing by a little," which to me was an alarm bell rung by a desperate manager who has no idea what else to do or say.

The problem is that he's whipping the dumbest of fans into demanding they go out and buy more Jason Bays. I'm also at a loss as to what will happen, and I guess I was hoping they'd rebuild more radically by now, but that they suck shouldn't be a surprise at this stage I suppose.

I heard that this afternoon, thought he was going to have
an aneurism or something. And he doesn't even care, so it's
all a bunch of fake bullshit. Like WWF talk-radio at this point.
I think he misses Mad Dog.

This a day after he claimed he wasn't going to talk about the Mets anymore.

Whatever, he's an idiot. I imagine half the stuff he yelled about either A. isn't true, B. Was something Sandy told him yesterday they were going to address.

The thing about Terry is that he's out of ideas. It happens to every manager at some point, but some are protected by the talent their GM gives them --- Joe Torre, Ron Washington.

Terry's either got to resign or he's got to spend some time on an ashram coming up with new ideas, because the old ones have gotten him as far as they're gonna get him. That blog about his quest for a second lefty physically hurt me. "Second lefty" may soon become the sort of "cleaning woman!" trigger phrase for me that "eighth-inning guy" has been.

I hope next year to see a new manager, a new catcher, a new second baseman, three new outfielders and what the hell, a new coaching staff.

I suspect I'm going to be disappointed.

And I don't know what to think about the bullpen. There's a new one every year, and it's never any good. I suppose the thing to wish for is a bullpen that sees many fewer innings.

If I knew you were gonna respond, I'da written Gl@v!ne instead of Glavine. Collins isn't part of the solution, I agree. But in all fairness, a three headed triumvirate of John McGraw, Gil Hodges and Davey Johnson couldn't squeeze out a meaningful number of extra wins. I wonder who'd win the fight for the Rolaids tablets, though?

Just listened to the whole thing for the first time...

Yeah, he's essentially right about the team. But, as bml said in so many words... this team isn't-- and was never TO BE-- the finished product. It's frustrating after seeing them punch above their weight-- and each individual game is frustrating to watch-- but overall, it's not really THAT surprising.

My issue with the rant is, this is a guy to whom rebuilding-- however prudent-- is anathema. So when I hear him, I'm making an aural "seasoning-adjustment" so severe, it's tough to even taste how accurate he is, so to speak. Outside of their record, his Rockies facts/assertions are off a bit. But... yeah... essentially right, I suppose.

my problem with Fatscessa's rant isn't that its not factual or accurate -- it basically is, as far as that goes -- it's that it's not TRUTHFUL.

The truth is that anybody looking at this team before the season started (at least anybody not looking through blue and orange colored glasses) would've had a hard time seeing a .500 team much less a playoff team, and most pundits predicted they wouldn't be... hell, i bet even Fatscessa predicted they wouldn't be (i don't listen to him anymore so i don't know what he predicted, but it seems likely enough that i'd bet it were so). So why all the outrage that they're 10 games under as September approaches? We're just about where everybody thought we'd be. Why the forced, phoney, fake vein-popping outrage? To get people to listen and talk about him, that's why. and here we are, doing it.

move along, nothing to see here. no rubbernecking.

The other problem is he somehow feels the need to create a bunch of strawman arguments (as if there weren't enough ACTUAL ones) that he can then easily knock down.

Most notably he sells the idea that "the team" is selling Harvey & McHugh as 'the second coming of Seaver, Ryan & Koosman' -- as if anyone actually said anything like that. Then, by not naming the folks who actually said anything like that (although he included SNY as a culprit) the sloppy listener is left to assume that both Wilpons, Saul Katz, Sandy, Terry, Jay Horowitz, Gary, Keith & Ron, plus Carlin, Ojeda and any other assorted studio hosts, are either spouting such stuff on a daily basis or maybe just whispering it to MF personally.

Gary citing Elias releases that X hasn't been done in an ML debut since Marichal isn't the same as Gary claiming that McHugh IS Marichal (as MF certainly implies if not out-right states) and then countering those claims by pointing out that none of it matters because of how bad Colorado has been this year as if Gary didn't say that numerous times also is the worst kind of setting up your own 'I can't be wrong' argument.

Listen, folks. It's my fault. I've been selling McHugh as Marichal for two years now.

I was wrong. Great debut, but I've got to honestly admit that I've oversold him. But you know what? Nimmo is gonna make DiMaggio look silly. Tris Speaker? Willy Mays? Clowns.

I was hopeful for .500. Am I disappointed? Yes. Am I surprised? No.

One thing that I think gets lost in this is that as horribly as the team has played for the last month, they're still within a game of two division rivals who came into the season with infinitely higher expectations. Yeah, a lot of people (certainly myself included) got their hopes up when the team started well. It didn't work out, oh well. But if they can pull themselves together enough to finish ahead of one or both of the Phillies and Marlins, that would still be something for me.

Youch!
It didn't sting that much tho cuz the Mets have really, really, really, sucked since just before the break. Tough to watch. I don't agree with all this talk that Shorty should go. At this point, the way the team has played, if he wants to try and keep things as positive as possible he has to say just what he's saying. The other alternative is to go off like Francesca, and I wouldn't want to see that. If TC had a contending team, we'd be contending. Its amazing and enjoyable that we were in the hunt at all this season.

Forty five seconds. Had to stop. If I wanted to listen to a big douchy blowhard yelling his fool head off I'd just go to YSIII and throw a dart.

For the record, Fman's son is the sweetest boy you'd ever want to know. Engaging and polite.

Thanks friend! Fboy and I both enjoyed your company and conversation, as we do every summer at Citi Field :)
