Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Buzz in Cyberland that the Mets are negotiating with Ronny Cedeo to see if he'd like to come over their house to play.Career sub-.300 OBP and pretty consistent about it, too. Modest extra-base power fell off last year too. Mets and Pirates seem to be shopping at each other's yard sales these days.Me, I was more jazzed by Quintanilla.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 If they're letting Ronny Paulino go they need to fill the Ronny slot somewhere.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Are there actually any sorta maybe not completely worthless backup SS out there? Honestly, isn't it probably more beneficial to just make Turner practice it a little bit more?

TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I'm not sure we'll ever need another Cedeno.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Had his best season ever WAR-wise last year, but that's largely because both BB-r and Fangraphs show his defense spiking remarkably. That could be an illusion or an unsustainable reality, but at least they agree.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I don't know about that. I suspect he's good enough to be a backup shortstop on a last-place team.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Just because the team's got no realistic chance of finishing higher than third or fourth doesn't mean they have to aim at "f*cking terrible."If he'll play for the league minimum-plus, he's worth it. Maybe.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Not a big Ronny Cedeo Fan Club chapter here, i'm gathering.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Started at short the last season for the fourth-place Buccos.I mean, they were fourth pretty much despite him, but still.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 RumBunter already missing their Ronny.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I don't think Cedeno hurts the team, unless he ends up blocking someone from getting promoted who would help, but he won't help things around here either.

Turner may be the most logical guy without a chair now.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Shooting for the 75 million dollar payrollI guess Turner must have pissed somebody off, he's better than Cedeno.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 He's better than Chin-lung Hu, at least. The Mets had room on the bench for a second reserve infielder, so I don't think this adversely affects Turner. I think Ryan Theriot would have been a better fit among the free agents, but not if he'd need a starter's salary. It's tough to get excited about filling out the bench, but I don't see the point of booing it either.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 This guy is far better than Omar Whatzisname they signed a few days ago.Two years ago, hit ten homers. Was injured part of last year.Let's face it, they have nobody else on the roster who could fill in for a week or so as the backup shortstop and not make you cringe every time a ground ball is hit to the left side. Turner can't play that position for more than an (eventful) inning or so.There may be some guys in the minors who can play there in a year or two (Valdespin for one), but they're not ready.A decent pickup.Later

He's Alex Cora with the baserunning awareness of Angel Pagan. He's Starlin Castro, without the glove, and minus the bat, and plus a few years. He makes Jeter look like Jeter thinks he looks. He is... the Least Interesting Signing In The World.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Yeah, I don't know why youse guys think this effects Justin Turner at all at all. The job he looks to get was symbolically being held by Jordany Valdespin, and will be held by Valdespin in fact if the relative performances make an argument for it.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Generally, I like it when you can fill a bench role with a guy who until he joined your team was a starter. If he's cool with it, especially. Not like Bobby Bo, but like Desi Relaford. Usually they are considered talented enough to have been given chances to start, might do one or two things well, but also proven in need of a successful role switch to save their career. Probably still young enough to believe a strong showing in a limited role can get them back on the big-money path. That can be a good moment to have such a guy. Now, what Cedeno brings I'm not sure. He doesn't appear to hit well, shows no particular platoon strengths and I'm ignorant of his D though I'm sure its considered acceptable at SS. But he fits the young-veteran-at-the-moment-his-career-switches definition otherwise, and maybe he shows us something./crosses fingers
