On Baseball Nation:

[indent:1ud3w8tj]Derek Jeter got five at-bats Thursday night against the Rays, but managed just one hit. He still seemed like a great bet to collect two more hits -- and reach 3,000, of course -- this weekend at home, but those plans have been dealt at least a glancing blow by Mother Nature, who Friday has sent to the Bronx thunderstorms that may well last throughout the evening.

Thus, Friday night's game has been canceled. A doubleheader could have been scheduled for Saturday, but the Rays -- in a move that's sure to be reviled in New York -- reportedly voted (as is their right) against playing two games in one day. So the Rays and Yankees will play only two more games before the All-Star break ... and after the All-Star break, the Yankees head to Toronto.

If Jeter's going to reach the magical number at home, he's got two games to get two hits. Which is certainly do-able, but the Yankees will be facing David Price on Saturday afternoon, and James Shields on Sunday. So this might be a close-run thing.[/indent:1ud3w8tj]

Go Rays!!!!!

as is their right? Remember (and Steve Popper just brought this up too) when the Braves supposedly forced the Mets to play a doubleheader early on this season? So did they have a say or not?

Maybe the Yankees don't actually want to play a doubleheader (injuries abound!) and are just blaming the Rays?

Does Tampa have injury problems? With Jeter, A. Rodriguez and M. Rivera hurting, why wouldn't they play tomorrow?

And for me, that means maintaining the faade of my farcical injury. The truth is also that I'm a really awful player at this point and I don't need to underscore that fact to the world by playing in a showcase game I'm clearly --- cuh-learly --- unqualified for. OK, guys, heh-heh, the real statement is... HEY! Where's that guy going?"

I was going to make a comment earlier today about Mariano pulling out of the ASG (even though not injured and just as he's seemingly done for the last number of ASGs and WBCs) was going to lead to Jeter & ARod pulling out as well with injuries that will keep them out of the game even as they don't keep them out of regular season games.
But I was too slow as both pulled out of the ASG today.

You know, it makes more than a little sense for managers to stop appointing players to the All Star Game if they have any history at all of pulling themselves out of previous one despite not being on the disabled list.

Derek, the world needs one plate appearance of your glowing aura and three innings of your embarassing defense. Is that too much to ask?

Especially since if they're hurt, Jeter would make them better.

It's not up to Tampa, it was never up to Tampa, this was always a Yankee decision. whee..

I checked and it looks like the Rays had the right to veto the split DH because they already have two split DH's scheduled for the year. In April, that wasn't so for the Mets so MLB rules permitted the Braves to schedule games to their competitive advantage. (Why is two the number?)

From the NY Post:

League rules gave the Rays (and Yankees) a choice about the day-night doubleheader, because each team already has two split double-headers scheduled later this season.

Of course, the MFYs could have scheduled a single-admission DH without needing approval from Tampa but they opted not to do that.

Gay Rod with a torn meniscus, surgery decision to come today, he'll be out a onth and more or he might " fight through it" like a true yankee.

Didn't realize they had 2, yeah, that's it. Mets have had two as well. it's in the CBA. There's a lot of stuff in there. (The Cubs and Red Sox have specific clauses that state that single-admission doubleheaders are not considered a practical option or someting)

There's a clause saying TV agreements trump the rules, but I think that's more related to start times. If I were the PA, that's sometihng I'd want renegotiated in th next one

I imagine the HGH will help him 'fight through it'.

I'm at work yesterday and a MFY fan walks in to chat. He's a good guy despite his rooting interest. He said that he's going to NY for the weekend and will be at the game on Saturday. I say "that's great. Maybe you'll see Jeter get 3000." And he says something like "I hope he goes 10 for 10 tonight so it doesn't matter tomorrow and Jeter doesn't care about 3000 because he's only about winning, same with Mo, all those guys care about is winning, not personal records."

Geez, what a load of crap. Scott Hairston cares about winning too but he's not making Ford (or any) commercials. Tim Byrdak cares about winning but he's not dating everybody on the Maxim 100. This "all he cares about winning" stuff really pisses me off.

Jeter gets 2999 after the home plate ump refuses to call strike 3 twice so Price has to lay it over. Jeter did that absurd body contortion on a pitch over the inside corner and his aura distracted the ump who missed that call and the one thereafter.

And the guy in the message above was there. SOB.

Tampa Bay is in Florida. Guess which state Derek's garish new home is in? Yup.

The Rays were paid off to groove their pitches. The truth will emerge. Maybe not in my lifetime, maybe not in yours, but emerge it will.

Guy behind me at Fenway tonight: "It's great that Jeter went 5 for 5 today. That means they're going to keep him the lineup and the same spot in the batting order for like the next thirty games. And he's GONNA SUCK!"

I think what bothers me most is that I have so much more respect for an exclusive club that includes all players and not just those graced from above to wear the pinstrpes and the damned interocking NY. I always liked that no MFYs were in there.

And I love how the MFY media shills are so amzed at how DJ could acheive such a feat while playing for just one team. I picture them saying Craig who? Whats a Yaz?

Biggio, or Yaz, or Brett, or Kaline & Cobb (WOW, one team was blessed enough to have two!!), or Clemente, or Musial, or Ripken, or Yount, or Gwynn.
And then there are those guys who got 3K with one team and then switched, but those are obscure names I wouldn't expect the MFY universe to know, like Aaron and Mays.
