metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2011 Author Posted August 18, 2011 Mike Jacobs bustedThe Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Minor League first baseman Mike Jacobs of the Colorado Rockies organization has received a 50-game suspension after testing positive for Human Growth Hormone (hGH), a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension of Jacobs, who is currently with Triple-A Colorado Springs of the Pacific Coast League, is effective immediately.http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20110818&content_id=23385540&vkey=pr_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 The last two refuges of a fringey power hitter: signing with Colorado and taking the juice.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2011 Author Posted August 18, 2011 Could this be true? "@jaysonst: Mike Jacobs has made history, but it's not good history. He's 1st North American pro athlete to test positive for HGH, according to MLB."
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Seems rather hard to believe.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Well, they only came up with a credible test for HGH with a 2008 breakthrough. I imagine it's only been implemented quite recently.A British rugby player was the first big fish netted by the test. That was last year.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Maybe HGH specifically. You'd think MLB would know of what they speak here. I guess all the other suspensions were for other things.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 I guess this makes Mike Jacobs a pioneer. Let's build him a rotunda!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Yeah, they just introduced testing in the high minor leagues in mid-2010. I'm guessing it won't be part of the big-league bouquet of tests until the next CBA. So a major league vet slumming at AAA is the most likely to get caught.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 The Royals just signed Francoeur to an extension. Weren't they supposed to be getting smarter?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Jacobs was released shortly after the announcement. Ouch. You don't get that in the bigs.

All for a Putz. yikes. well, at least we got rid of Heilman in the deal. Apparently, we can now get him back if we want. which i'm sure we don't.Good, day for Seattle, though, getting not only Carp and Vargas, but OFer Franklin Gutierrez, too, as well as later trading Cleto for Brendan Ryan.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 It's a theory, but in reviewing, it looks like testing didn't begin until toward the end of the season. He probably wouldn't be subject to the minor league tests anyway, still living under a big-league contract and the terms of the MLBPA CBA.I think the obvious reason for Perez's refusal is sufficient explanation.

TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Giants vs. Cubs: Carlos Beltran Hears "Boos" From CrowdThe transition to San Francisco has not been an easy one for Carlos Beltran since coming over in July. He drew the ire from the Giants faithful for hitting the disabled list with an injured wrist just a few days after joining the team and he has struggled to consistently play well since returning to the field. It hit an all-time high on Wednesday night. After his fourth hitless at-bat of the night, the boo birds came out in pretty strong force at AT&T Park. Going 0-for-4 with six runners left on base is never good for any player, but Beltran has been held to a higher level of scrutiny over the last few weeks. The man who was dubbed the savior of a struggling offense has been anything but that and is now hearing it from the fans. The Giants currently trail the Cubs 5-2 in the eighth inning. A loss would be the team's third straight and would move them to six games back in the NL West.

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 Y'know, with Hairston out we could use a RH-hitting centerfielder, but I wonder about this:The Marlins cut outfielder Mike Cameron late Monday night for conduct detrimental to the team. Two sources on Wednesday gave the reason: Cameron got into a verbal altercation with a flight attendant on the team's charter flight from Pittsburgh to Atlanta on Sunday. The altercation did not turn physical, but the charter company filed a complaint. The Marlins' front office believed it could not keep Cameron after the incident. He wasn't in the team's longterm plans, anyway, and his release gives the Marlins a chance to give Bryan Peterson (.280) more at-bats over the final two weeks of the season. Cameron was hitting .238.--Miami Herald
