Five years, $110 million.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Well, part of what I'm driving at is that --- if Crawford is really a relevant comp --- Alderson has some time to chew on it.I remember feeling all mopey when Jeter signed his (insane) ten-year deal, wondering how the Mets could possibly afford Edgardo Alfonzo. Two years later, Alfonzo's contract was up and Steve Phillips came in low. Wisely or not, it was the correct move.

Before other teams can call him and tell him how much they think he's worth.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 I mean, we know David Wright is worth 15-20% more than Reyes... keep in mind that the Reyes precedent is going to inform the Wright contract.

I say identical five year, $110 million contracts for each of them.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 The one good thing about Crawford going to the Sox is that he was supposedly the back-up plan for the Yanx if they fail to land Lee.The idea is that they'd sign Crawford and then package Brett Gardner up with C/DH Jesus Montero or maybe one of their other minor league catchers and go trolling for pitchers through the trade route: Grienke, Garza, etc.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Fangraphs has Reyes' performance over the past two season as being worth $15M total. Yeah, he lost time to injury, but he's done so in the past as well, and do you really want to bank that much on injury history not repeating?

By every reasonable measure, Wright has outplayed and outhealthed Reyes all along, and he's worth more than his teammate. He knows it and his agents sure know it.

Thats a big Matzoh ball hanging out.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 I didn't know Jose Reyes was Jewish!Oh, and any multi-year contract carries a risk of injury. Maybe Jose is more of a risk than some others, but overall, he's been on the field a lot more than he's been off.

Guest 86-Dreamer Guests Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 Coco Crisp was younger than Carl Crawford when he arrived at Fenway, and played a fine centerfield if I recall correctly. Carl may work out better than Coco, but I would not bet that much money on it.

bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Tom Boswell says the the Red Sox got the a leftover when they signed Crawford instead of Werth:http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/10/AR2010121006172.htmlFrankly, it came across as if it was written by an Nationals fan. Werth isn't close to the player that Crawford is.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 It's more like he's trying to claim that Crawford is simply a bad fit for Fenway, something the (selected) stats seem to bear out.I tend to not like to over-rely on those situational stats although, for an in-division player with most of nine seasons in the bigs and over 300 ABs in Boston, the sample size is decently large to where there probably is at least some truth to it particularly since the 'vs BoSox' stats are very different in Boston as opposed to in St Pete.
