I'd heard about this. Actually, I think they have cans of it at the new yankee stadium.

on review, I was thinking of Schafer, or Schlitz.

I attended the original relaunch (oxymoron?) press luncheon on the eve of the 1998 season. Signed the media check-in sheet behind Ralph Branca. For "affiliation," he wrote "Baseball".

Now that's an affiliation.

Mary Austin's pretty awesome. Of course, she's like 80 now, so she's probably not quite so hot.

Tippi, on the other hand, could never live up to Alfred's Grace Kelly fetish, just like Kim Novak and Eva Marie Saint before her.

They actually put them on the cans in 1957.

I'm no design expert, but that's really icky packaging. I mean I know they are positioning Rheingold in what they call the "sub-premium" (i.e.: cheap-o) beer category but that's no excuse for it to look cheap. That font looks like a rip-off of their old logo, not an update of it. And bring back the Extra Dry. Don't squander your equity, Rheingold, don;t imitate it, claim it as your own!

My beer is Rheingold the dry beer
Think of Rheingold whenever you buy beer...

It's refreshing not sweet
It's the extra dry treat

Nostalgia aside*, is there a reason I should pick some up? Is Rheingold-- at least, in the classic formulation-- a decent cheap beer option?

*And I'm not discounting nostalgia; there are a lot dumber reasons to make a beverage purchase-- take it from me, someone who's semi-hoarding Four Loko.

I'll bet drunkenness is in the running.

Well, I had some, and on a scale of 1-10 I'd say it's about a 3. Won't make you vomit unless you consume medically unwise quantities of it, at least.

It's not as taste-free as Coors Light, but it's not the kind of beer where you say, "Man that was good, think I'll have another."

Over/under on the re-re-re-disappearance of Rheingold- 9 months.

But Casey liked it, even though he knows better than to play pepper. Someone could get hoit.

I never did say where Casey got his non-standard Mets socks from.

(I know we had a thread about that '62 Mets Rheingold ad --Edgy started it -- but I can't find it.
